For the second time this offseason, Brian Gregory and the basketball staff will have to conduct a search to replace a departing assistance coach. Billy Schmidt has left the program to join Billy Donovan on his staff in Gainesville. Schmidt was one of the three main assistants for Brian Gregory's first three seasons on the Flats.
This announcement comes just months after another shuffle on the bench in McCamish Pavilion. Mamadou N'Diaye was brought onto the staff from Coastal Carolina earlier this summer, replacing the departing Josh Posterino. Like N'Diaye, Schmidt worked primarily with the forwards and centers on the team and his replacement will likely do the same.
This offseason has seen significant turnover for the Tech basketball program with three of last year's starters and five players overall graduating or transferring away this summer. The Jackets don't have a single post player (excluding the perimeter-oriented Quinton Stephens) who logged any minutes with the team returning this season, so expect a replacement coach to work with the young forwards and centers to be named fairly soon.
EDIT: I originally printed the name Billy Schmidt as “Brian Schmidt”. I regret the error.
