Do we have to?

Hey, y'all. It might surprise some people, but no one was really chomping at the bit to write this preview, so it fell to me. Don't you feel lucky?

Let's not waste time here: the Bulldogs are coming off a 14-1 season in which they put up ridiculous video game stats on defense, rarely looked mortal, and decisively avenged their only loss. They then had an eye-popping fifteen players get selected in the NFL draft. You would think such a loss of talent would see a sharp regression to the mean this year, but then you remember which team you're talking about and start to question your faith in a higher power, if you still have any.

Defense

Key Losses

I'm not even going to list all the names in this sub-category, because of Georgia's eleven defensive starters from the championship game, two return in 2022. The rest all got drafted, except for LB/DB Latavious Brini, who transferred to Arkansas. With them go nearly half (49.8%, if we're being exact) of the team's total tackles from last year, also nearly half (48%) of their sacks, and just over half (51.2%) of their pass break-ups. Also departed is DC Dan Lanning, now head coach at Oregon. In his stead will be co-coordinators Glenn Schumann and.... [checks notes] Will Muschamp?? So that defense will probably take a step back from a season where it allowed 9.5 points per game and held opponents to single digits eight times. But not as big a step as you would want.

Key Returnees

LBs Nolan Smith and Robert Beal, LB/DB William Poole

With all the faces rotating out of Georgia's Defense, the linebacker corps is remaining pretty stable. Smith and Beal, who elected not to go pro, combined for 78 total tackles and ten sacks, and Poole, who plays a LB/DB hybrid position, took a lot of playing time from the aforementioned Brini as the season went on. He'll get to put up a lot more numbers this season, as will many of the five-star backups from last year who will now be starters.

Offense

Key Losses

RBs Zamir White and James Cook

Georgia's RB duo of 2022 is gone to the pros, and with them go 55% of the team's rushing yards from last year. But the Bulldogs have had a pair of stars at RB for pretty much every year I can remember going back to 2009, so this year's pair — senior Kenny McIntosh and junior Kendall Milton — will probably be just fine, even if they both were merely four-star recruits. And if not, there's definitely one or two five-star recruits right behind them.

WRs George Pickens and Jermaine Burton

Pickens didn't play much in 2021 due to injury, but he was always a problem for opposing defenses and is now off making NFL money. Burton was the top WR on the team in terms of receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and transferred to Alabama, but Georgia liked to spread the ball to its WRs and the #1 overall target played a different position — see more below. They'll be fine. Ladd McConkey is returning, anyway.

Key Returnees

QB Stetson Bennett

Everyone's favorite football player named after a hat is back for one last ride with basically nothing left to prove after the one time walk-on did what the three previous five-star QB recruits who immediately preceded him could not. Did Bennett lead college football in completions, completion percentage, or passing yards last year? No, to all of those. Was he top 10, or even top 25? Also no, again, to all of those. But he was #4 in passer rating, because he does exactly what he needs to do when he needs to do it and can manage a game like no other. Doubt him at your own peril.

TE Brock Bowers

The way I understand it, Brock Bowers is Jesus Christ himself reincarnated and playing tight end. Bowers led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns last year. Not at tight end, the entire team, period. Second place wasn't even close, in any category. He did this as a true freshman, breaking school records and being named SEC freshman of the year. Defenders better get used to seeing his name, because they're going to see a lot of it as he finds the endzone again and again.

Specialists

Key Losses

P Jake Camarda

Not much to report here, other than the loss of a punter who almost won the 2020 Ray Guy Award. But if you were to list the teams by how much they'd be affected by the loss of a quality punter, Georgia would probably be near the bottom.

Conclusion

I think it's safe to say Georgia will probably not be as good as they were last year. But their blue-chip ratio remains astronomically high and their roster is still stacked with talent. Few teams (if any) can embody the "next man up" mentality like the Bulldogs. Right now you can pencil them in for ten wins and the SEC East crown, at worst. As for that game at the end of the season? Well, currently, Georgia and Tech appear to be playing completely different sports. Maybe consider finding something better to do that day. Personally, I think Geoff Collins will be finding his own way home from Athens.

Are you looking forward to this game at all?

Geoff Collins has his work cut out for him this fall

A couple weeks ago, Ralph Russo of the Associated Press offered this thought on Georgia Tech football’s upcoming fall schedule:

Georgia Tech’s schedule looks like it was made by someone who hates Georgia Tech. pic.twitter.com/Lq5Inqn2l1
— Ralph D.

Between the actions of the ACC, Georgia Tech administration, and Georgia Tech athletics itself the past few years, it’s not hard to decide for oneself Georgia Tech’s schedule was indeed created by someone who hates Georgia Tech football. I can’t recall the last time I saw a Georgia Tech football schedule and thought it was good, but this one combines being bad in multiple ways to create maybe the worst I’ve ever seen. Let’s break it down:

The home/away splits make it a bad schedule for fans

On any given year not affected by COVID you can expect the Yellow Jackets to have seven home football games, or at least six. This year, it’s just five. “But that’s not true!” I hear you protest, “it is six, just look at the schedule!”

Look, we need to be honest with each other. The season opener vs. Clemson is a home game in name only. As I was typing this, I received an email from GT athletics with the subject line “These Tickets WILL Sell Out”. With all due respect (which, at this point, is little to none), the only way that becomes true is if Clemson fans buy up a large number of tickets — which, given their proximity and recent football success, last season notwithstanding, is a decent possibility. Even if that doesn’t happen, it doesn’t change the fact this game is being played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of Atlanta United. It’s not the home of Georgia Tech football, no matter how much people within the program would try to tell us it is. I understand why these games are happening — I wrote about it three years ago. But just one game there was enough to know it felt different — and unfortunately, it didn’t feel like home.

Not to be overlooked — despite it desperately trying to escape attention — is the other weeknight game on the schedule: vs. Virginia on Thursday, October 22. Yes, Georgia Tech plays two home (or “home”) weeknight games this year. So instead of the typical seven (or at worst, six) Saturdays at Bobby Dodd fans would expect to have in a given fall, this year they are only getting four. There’s no way around it — this schedule is a total bummer for local Georgia Tech fans.

Georgia Tech — once again — is not set up for non-con success

We all know Georgia Tech would rather close for good than make things easy for its students, and that extends to its football scheduling as well. Tech likes to tout the rigor of its schedules, and when the Industrial Engineering program is #1 in the nation for several years running (I don’t actually know how long it’s been anymore), it works. When the football team is underperforming, the natural thought might be to do what you can to set up an easier schedule. (To save yourself some time on that article, scroll down to “tier 3b”. Then scroll back up to the top and note it was written in January of 2020, almost two and a half years ago.)

During the Paul Johnson years, schedules like this were mitigated somewhat by a system that pretty consistently allowed Georgia Tech to punch above its weight. In 2022, it’s a recipe for pain. UCF has been one of the hottest G5 teams for nearly a decade now, is about to move up to the Big 12, and utterly demolished Tech in Atlanta just two years ago. Meanwhile, the Ole Miss games were pushed back from a time when the Jackets were doing slightly better than the Rebels to now, when they have decided to get scary again. I was surprised to discover this move was apparently at Georgia Tech’s request after years of believing the opposite. I can’t say I understand the rationale behind it, but I think it’s safe to say it turned into another instance of Georgia Tech kneecapping itself.

I realized I didn’t even mention Georgia at all. But do I need to?

A no-good, very bad home stretch

This ties back into the first point a bit, but man, the second half of that schedule is just all kinds of awful. It starts with the aforementioned Thursday night game vs. Virginia, and finishes with 4 of 5 games on the road, including two straight to finish the season. It’s not hard to look at this stretch of @FSU, @Virginia Tech, vs. Miami, @UNC, and @uga and understand why many think Geoff Collins’ fate will be sealed before we even get to that point. But it is good if you’re trying to schedule a longer Thanksgiving vacation, so there is that.

Ahead of last season, I said Geoff Collins was facing a “put up or shut up” year against a schedule that was not particularly favorable, but five wins or so while avoiding major blowouts would be enough to show progress. As we well know, Collins failed on both counts, putting him in a deeper hole this year against a schedule that’s just as unfavorable, if not more so. Collins needs a miracle if he wants to be the head coach at Georgia Tech in 2023, and just from the schedule alone, it doesn’t look like he’s going to get it.

The writing is already on the wall for Geoff Collins

Do you remember? <s>Twenty-first</s> fourth night of September?

Year 3, game 1 of the Geoff Collins era at Georgia Tech. After two years of the biggest transformation in the history of college football, it was time for the proof of concept. All that pain had been leading up to this. What was this, exactly? A loss to a MAC team that had gone winless in 2020. A loss to a team was paid a million dollars for the pleasure.

After the game, Collins sat at his presser and said in front of God and everyone that the wins would come. It wasn’t if they would, but when.

Well, it’s just shy of three months later. Let’s count the wins since then:

a blowout win over an FCS team

a blowout win over UNC in the home of Atlanta United

a last second comeback win over the worst team in the ACC

That’s the full, comprehensive list. Am I supposed to be impressed? Because I’m not, y’all. That last win is also the most recent win for Georgia Tech football. They haven’t won since October 9. They haven’t scored a point since November 13. And the Jackets open next season playing Clemson, on Labor Day, back in the home of Atlanta United, so it’s very possible both of those will stretch even further.

Oh, sure, there have been the requisite staff changes that occur when you finish a season 0-6, having been outscored 100-0 in the last two games. At this point, though, it feels like they’re just rearranging the deck chairs in Edge. The same man is still in charge at the top. Three years ago he arrived on the Flats acting like he had the roadmap to take Tech to new heights — a plan no one else could possibly come up with or execute. He has not changed or altered his course one iota in the intervening time, despite the growing amount of evidence his plan is not working. He is not going to now, because if he was — if he was open to adjusting his approach based on the results he was seeing — he would have already done so. Instead, he gets indignant at press conferences at the very suggestion. There is zero doubt in my mind Sunday’s staff shakeup was at the behest of his boss, and if he had his druthers, the staff would have survived intact to bash their heads against a brick wall for a fourth straight year.

And of course, as it so happened, Jahymr Gibbs announced his transfer while I was in the middle of writing this. My thoughts on that could be spun off into their own article, but suffice it to say for now: Gibbs was one of the greatest players to set foot on the Flats, and landing him was the biggest coup of Collins’ time here. Collins ran him off in two years, and that alone might go down as the most damning indictment of this whole misadventure.

There’s no other way to put it — Geoff Collins’ tenure at Georgia Tech has been a remarkable failure. You can see it in the win/loss column, you can see it in the stands, and, now, you can see it in the transfer portal. Collins’ acrimonious split with Georgia Tech is inevitable at this point — a matter of when, not if. Sim to end, please.

Saturday felt like the beginning of the end.

It seemed like Geoff Collins really wanted to just pretend Saturday’s loss was a win. Or maybe he wanted to forget about it all together. With this being his 22nd postgame conference following a loss — out of 31 total — it’d be hard to blame him. Heck, given I was unable to watch this game on TV, I chose instead to spend my afternoon eating chili and helping a friend paint their new house.

But I’m just some guy writing on a sports blog. Geoff Collins is the head football coach at Georgia Tech. I can simply choose not to talk about the fact he is now 9-22 in his tenure here. Collins doesn’t want to talk about it either, and that, on its own, is a problem. How he responded to questions on this team’s performance at Saturday’s postgame conference is what really concerns me.

Early on in the press conference — actually, it was part of the answer to the very first question — Collins got on reporter Kelly Quinlan for “harp[ing] on the things that go wrong” and not giving enough credit to the things that went well. He later offered the two fourth down stops Georgia Tech made as an example, and lamented how “[people] don’t seem to want to talk about those things.” I can’t believe I have to explain this to someone who’s been a head coach in college football for almost five years now, but: no one wants to talk about the fourth down stops that didn’t win you the game. Especially not in a game where you were outgained by 234 yards. This was an extremely close final score. A couple plays going the other way would have made the difference and given Georgia Tech the victory in a game where they were vastly outplayed. Then, sure, we could have talked about those plays, and the fourth down stops, and who knows what else, and the impact they had. But that didn’t happen, and here we are.

Later on, when asked his feelings on being on the wrong end of so many close losses, Collins talked about his last job and how Georgia Tech is “really, really close” to getting over the hump. These are not reassurances from someone who has real solutions. They are lashings out from someone who is utterly defeated and has nothing left to offer.

This, to me, marks what I feel like is the point of no return for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech. Openly whining about people being too negative on the state of your program when you are 9-22 is a bad look. Deflecting by bringing up something you did at a previous school — something which may not stand up to scrutiny — is pathetic. Talking about how much your players “battled” over, and over, and over again, after having lost three straight games, and being on course to finish the season 0-6, is just..... sad. Among all the miserable on-field results we’ve endured over the past 2.75 seasons, this feels like the thing Collins simply and truly cannot come back from. It is theoretically possible for him to do so. But the requirements on the path are far higher than what he has shown himself to be capable of at this point in time.

Of course, Collins is likely not going anywhere for now. There’s still a lot of money left in his contract, and terminating it now would put a financial constraint on the athletic department Todd Stansbury surely does not want. Joey’s prediction after week one feels like the most likely outcome right now. That leaves fifteen more games with Collins on the sidelines, after which, well, hopefully something will have changed.

In an earlier mailbag I said Collins and this staff needed to give us reasons to be more positive. So far, he hasn’t given us any, and at this point, sadly, it’s not looking like we’ll be getting many.

Drink the beer, for it is good.

Finally, a power ranking guaranteed to be correct

A wise man — I think his name was Benjamin Franklin — once said: “beer is good, beer is good, beer is good, and stuff.” Who could argue with that? Certainly not I, a person who has far more than a reasonable number of check-ins on Untapped. Georgia used to be — well, let’s not mince words here. When I graduated from Georgia Tech in 2011, Georgia was one of the worst beer states in the nation, thanks to archaic beer laws that kneecapped breweries and favored distributors. (The latter is still the case, but things are much better for brewers now.) Everyone remembers the before times when you “bought” a brewery tour and it came with six free beer tastings, right? It was economical, maybe, but once you were out of tokens, that was it. Georgia has so many more breweries now owing to better beer laws, and in the spirit of Power Rankings week.... it’s time to power rank them.

Some caveats: first, with a couple exceptions, I’m limiting this to breweries in Atlanta proper. Why? Because, as I said, there are so many breweries in Georgia now. Even if I just limited things to the Atlanta metro that’d be well north of 50, and I simply do not have the time to power rank that many breweries. Second, this is a power ranking of breweries only — I am not qualified to judge ciders or meads. Finally, as hard as it is to believe, I haven’t had beer from every Atlanta brewery just yet, so a few are getting left out — don’t take it personally.

Now, pour yourself a cold one and let’s get to ranking.

18. New Realm Brewing

New Realm comes with a pretty impressive pedigree — it was founded by Mitch Steele, longtime brewmaster at the legendary Stone Brewing in southern California. But the beers here are a bit more accessible than the (in)famous Arrogant Bastard. I’ll be honest, the beer does not feel like the main event here. The two best things NR has going for it are its location — right on the Atlanta Beltline — and the food. But that’s okay. Actually, it’s more than okay, because the food is really dang good. Get the meatballs, or the buffalo chicken pizza, or the campfire s’mores, then go walk a few miles on the Beltline to work it all off. Recommendations: Hazy Like a Fox, Mas Macho, Radegast

17. SweetWater Brewing Company

Established in 1996, SweetWater is one of the OGs of the Atlanta beer scene. And in terms of sheer output, they’re by far the biggest: at one time a top ten brewery in the country, some mergers and brewing alliances have pushed them down to..... 11. And no one in Georgia has a bigger distribution footprint — if Joey wanted to swing by the Spec’s in Houston and grab a pack, he could. Their flagship 420 Extra Pale is not for me and never has been, but their core beers remain solid and accessible, even as other newer breweries are constantly switching things up. And I’ll be happy to raise a Blue any day — still never had a beer quite like it. Recommendations: Blue, Fresh Sticky Nugs, Happy Ending

16. Steady Hand Beer Co.

Sure, you could go camping, or you could just got to Steady Hand, where they already have a campground set up. Plus, the beer’s way fresher and keeping it cold is someone else’s responsibility. Going to Steady Hand really is just like going to the mountains, except you don’t have to drive far, or pack, or hike. You just get to sit and enjoy your beer. Recommendations: Cloudlands, Circles of the Sun, Flower Business

15. Eventide Brewing

Founded in 2013, Eventide has been quietly brewing solid beers in Grant park for nearly a decade. I don’t ever hear any major hype for their releases, but those don’t come in limited run $20 4-packs, either. It’s beer for the working Atlantan. Recommendations: Citrus Grove, The “A”, Kattegat

14. Second Self Beer Company

Yes, you have yourself, but what about your second self? Second Self was founded by two Tech grads in 2014, and they’ve been innovating cool brews on Chattahoochee ever since. 2S is one of a few local breweries that worked with an Atlanta United supporters group to make an ATLUTD themed beer — in this case, the group was Terminus Legion and the beer was ViKings of the south. For my money, it’s still the best of the United beers. I’m still not sure what my second self is, but I’ll keep drinking until I find it. Recommendations: ViKings of the South, Bleeding Heart, Thai Wheat

13. Wild Heaven Beer

It’s possible you’re not overly familiar with Wild Heaven, but I’ll bet it’s more likely you’ve heard of Emergency Drinking Beer. Avondale Estates’s first brewery weren’t planning on it being their flagship when they first brewed it — a nice, crisp, refreshing crusher they have famously refused to categorize — but success like this is rarely planned. They opened up a second location in the West End in 2019. Pre-COVID, it was a great place to get some tacos, but they’ve switched up their food concept since then. Still, you should visit the original for beers by the tracks or the new hotness for beers by the Beltline. Can’t lose. Recommendations: Emergency Drinking Beer (duh), Ode to Mercy, Gravitational Wave

12. Sabbath Brewing

You want to rock out with your [Cannibal Corpse] out while drinking some truly metal beers? Well, keep it in your pants, but if you want to headbang at Sabbath, they’re not gonna tell you to stop. “When is Sabbath opening?” was a running joke amongst the Atlanta beer community for many years, and finally they did so this July over in East Atlanta Village. It fits the vibe there perfectly. Just don’t mosh — that’s an easy way to spill your beer. Recommendations: Trapped in the Grasp of a Memory, 3s and 7s, Dead Men Don’t Reoffend

11. Arches Brewing

Styled as “Atlanta’s other lager brewery” — more on that later — Arches is technically in Hapeville, but they’re right next to ATL airport, plus it’s a straight shot down Northside Drive to get there (although by that point the street name has changed twice and it’s now Dogwood Drive, but shhh), so they get a pass. Arches isn’t out to chase trends — they’re focused on making lagers and Belgian style beers, and honing them to perfection. It’s not going to attract all the internet hype, but the results are good nonetheless. I respect it. Recommendations: Mexican Empire, Mystik Bock, Zero Zero

10. Atlanta Brewing Company

The one, the only, ABC is the OG of the Atlanta beer scene. They’ve been pouring beers since 1993, and they’ve seen every brewery rise and brewery fall in the state. (Take a moment to pour one out for Dogwood Brewing.) I’ll be brutally honest here: prior to the big beer law changes, ABC wasn’t anything special. I remember going when they had six beers on tap, and four of those never changed. Now, though? They’ve got 28 beers on tap, and they always have plenty of new, creative beers to go alongside their staples. ABC might be pushing 30, but they’re not headed for the grave anytime soon. (As for that rebrand to “Red Brick” in the ‘10s, let’s not talk about it.) Recommendations: Baked Goods, Goseanna, Dad Beer

9. Fire Maker Brewing Company

Here be dragons! Opening a brewery in the middle of a global pandemic is a bold choice, but Fire Maker is not just making it work, but thriving. They snagged the #2 spot on USA Today’s best new brewery list, so things are only looking up for these baby dragons. They’re on Chattahoochee Avenue right off Howell Mill, perfectly located in the middle of west Atlanta’s budding brewer’s alley. Recommendations: Way Down Yonder, Critical Haze, Chattahooch-Tea

8. Bold Monk Brewing Co.

Serving up grub this writer’s mother once derided as “elevated pub food”, Bold Monk is tucked away back on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard. It was converted from an old industrial building — like many breweries are — but Bold Monk managed to cram both some modern looks and old world vibes inside. If you get the chance, visit the library upstairs or dine in the barrel room in the back. Their beers tend to skew more traditional than innovative, but that works perfectly with the food they’re serving up. Grab some frites and a pizza with your beer there. You won’t regret it. Recommendations: Chant, Shared Spirit, Indominus

7. Elsewhere Brewing

Down in Grant Park is a new-ish(?) development called the Beacon. It felt like a secret the first time I visited, but judging by the crowd at the establishments there I was probably just late to the party. The place has a South American vibe — an unusual sight among breweries, but one that invites a relaxing atmosphere while sipping their sessionable brews. When you arrive at Elsewhere, don’t go elsewhere. And make sure to get some empanadas while you’re there. Recommendations: Gest, Dulce de Leche, Lasting Impression

6. Wrecking Bar Brewpub

You’ve seen that building with the columns while driving through Little Five Points, right? That’s the Kriegshaber House, which has been the home of several different people and businesses over its long life, and since 2011 its resident has been Wrecking Bar. It’s a true farm-to-table joint whose farms include, well, their own, and there’s always plenty to enjoy on their constantly rotating menu. But if you’ve never been, get the pastrami, which is one of their few staples. And, yeah, the beer’s pretty good, too. Recommendations: Juice Willis, Technological Ripeness, Bovine Justice

5. Torched Hop Brewing Company

The Old Spaghetti Factory on Ponce is dead; long live the Old Spaghetti Factory. In its place rose Torched Hop in 2016, and I daresay there’s not a better brewpub in Atlanta. It’s Midtown location is easy to get to, parking is both free and plentiful, and.... everything here is just great. The food is great. The beer is great. The non-beer drinks are also great. And the vibe hits just right. Even if you’re not eating, you can hang out and play a game of bocce or Mario Kart on the N64. There’s a reason it was my date night go-to during my, ahem, Tinder times, and remains so now that I’m married. Keep a torch lit for Torched Hop. Recommendations: Spoondrift, Green Queen, Anthem of Angels

4. Halfway Crooks Beer

When Three Taverns starting getting a bit experimental, head brewer and Belgian native Joran Van Ginderachter broke off to cofound a lager focused, premise-only brewery — a huge risk. But amidst the craze of hazy bois, fruited sours, and pastry stouts, sometimes you really just want a beer that tastes like the beers you remember. And I’m really not sure there’s a brewery elsewhere in the country doing beers like that better than Halfway Crooks in Summerhill, over by the Field Formerly Known as Turner. I had neglected the humble lager for years — too much swill at house parties in college will do that to you — but HC changed my mind on all that. (Their ales are killer, too.) Recommendations: Settings, Radius, Active Low

3. Orpheus Brewing

Seven years ago I heard about a new brewery opening that would become “Atlanta’s first sour brewery” and thought, “hah! have fun with that.” Anyway, I’ve spent more than a few afternoons overindulging on their barrel-aged wild ales, which will get ya, and their barrel aged stouts, which will really get ya. Not recommended as an entry-level brewery, for sure. But once your beer training wheels (glasses?) are off, you’re going to find a lot to love at the brewery by Piedmont Park. Recommendations: Transmigration of Souls, Wandering Blues, any of the Stouts All the Way Down

2. Three Taverns Craft Brewery

“Hey, wait,” I hear some of you saying, “this is a Decatur brewery!” True, but Three Taverns opened their second location, the Imaginarium, on Memorial Drive last year, so they totally qualify now, because I say so. They started out brewing exclusively Belgian style beers. Then they unveiled Night on Ponce, an IPA, and everything changed. 3T is constantly rotating their taproom lineup, and every new beer feels creative without delving into truly wacky territory. Every fall they do a beer battle, where they split the brewers into two teams to each make a different beer in the same style, which always makes for a fun compare/contrast. I often found myself at the Parlour in Decatur before they opened the Imaginarium much closer to my house, and I think you should too. As for the mysterious Third Tavern, well, everyone’s still searching for it. Recommendations: Lord Fog, Morning Smack, Crave

1. Monday Night Brewing

It was in the long ago year of 2012 I found myself in the original Taco Mac — the small one, in Virginia-Highland, the one that actually still feels like a neighborhood bar. Monday Night was the beer of the month. I had never heard of them. I ordered a Fu Manbrew. It was good. They haven’t made it in years. That’s fine, because I don’t know if there’s a brewery in Atlanta constantly revolving and reinventing their beers the way MNB does. If they retired your fave, they more than likely replaced it with something even better. In 2017 they opened the Garage in the West End to kick their BA and sour beer program into overdrive. In 2018 they rolled out the Hop Hut, and it’s consistently brewing some of the best haze anywhere. They have taprooms in three states now. Never would I have thought from such humble beginnings would arise probably the best brewery in Atlanta. Wait, these are my power rankings. Definitely the best. Maybe Mondays aren’t so bad after all. Recommendations: Situational Ethics, Space Lettuce, anything from the Hop Hut (like Be Easy)

And there we have it, folks: the definitive ranking of Atlanta breweries. Look forward to the Decatur/Avondale/OTP rankings sometime in the future. Please talk about beer in the comments. I love talking about beer.

#10 North Carolina Tar Heels (-5.5) @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Ain’t nothing like a Thursday night game in Blacksburg. The lights, the Metallica, the existential dread of wondering if Justin Fuente finally breaks through this year or if the house of cards he built on horrible recruiting classes finally collapses. Meanwhile, on the other sideline, there is Mack Brown, unretired, seemingly eternal, building a recruiting juggernaut at a basketball school. Where did it all go wrong for the Hokies? We may never know. — Carter

I am not sure why UNC is only getting 5.5 points in this game. Is there just that much respect for playing in Blacksburg on a Thursday? UNC should cover easily. If they don’t I’m not sure if it says more about how good VPISU is or how bad UNC is. — Logan

Carter’s pick: UNC

Logan’s pick: UNC

#19 Penn State Nittany Lions @ #12 Wisconsin Badgers (-5.5)

Both these teams had it rough last year. Part of that was COVID and part of that was some amazing play by opponents. Both teams have plenty to prove in this matchup. In a toss up take Wisconsin because they’re at home, and their mascot doesn’t look like something I stitched together for a 5 year old. I will expect Penn State to keep it within a field goal though. — Logan

The Big Ten is going in on week 1, and quite frankly, I respect it. Would I rather see Wisconsin lining up against the Nittany Lions in November, featuring typical Wisconsin November weather? Sure, but it’s not some neutral site cash grab, so I’ll take it. (Please ignore the fact there are several such neutral site cash grabs in these picks. Lack of internal consistency is a feature of college football, not a bug.) — Carter

If there is anything, ANYTHING, to take away from the past 10 or so years of college football, it is that betting against Alabama is a terrible idea. Alabama takes it by 30 points. — Logan

No, really, betting against the Tide to cover has rarely turned out well. On a tangentially related note, I can’t wait to see how Miami fans react to seeing DragonCon cosplayers. — Carter

Battle of who you will be cheering for as a dark horse to win the BIG 10. After an impressive season last year Indiana brings back Michael Penix Jr. at QB. Iowa is getting some serious hype coming into this year from pundits who are looking for a team from the west to upset Ohio State. Look for Indiana to take this one in a surprise upset to push Iowa against the wall when they play Iowa State next week. — Logan

The B1G is doing us all dirty by forcing its two “wait, it’s week [n] and they’re still undefeated??” teams to play in week 1.
The four year* Texas “[Foo Fighters] Y’all, Big 12, We’re Out” tour kicks off Saturday, but before the Longhorns jump into the deep end of the SEC, they’ve got a few more games to play against teams closer to their caliber, starting with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. Billy Napier continues to build his Cajun Empire in Lafayette, and after coming a shrimp whisker’s width away from an undefeated season last year, he and the Cajuns are out to win everything this year, and it starts with putting another Big 12 skin on the wall.
At long last

Well, folks, we made it. In the midst of a global pandemic, we managed to get through a whole(....ish) college football season and only, like, 100 games were canceled. That’s far from passing with flying colors, but Cs get degrees, as many of us know, so congrats to all on a successful season, I guess, set to conclude with the championship game on Monday.... again, I guess.

Man, championship week feels like eons ago, doesn’t it? Normally my pick writing duties are all wrapped up by mid-December, but this year championship week was two weeks late, and then it was Christmas, and then it was New Year’s.... anyway, it’s 2021 now and it’s time to finally finish what I started. But first..... let’s talk about how everyone did picking the championships. The short answer: not great! Points-wise, this was one of the upsettiest weeks in the history of these picks, to say nothing of the several straight up upsets there were. (How you doin’, 4-3 finishing Pac-12 champion Oregon? Very nicely done, San Jose State! Way to absolutely crush the postseason, Ball State!) Kudos to @LeeNobody, Wima13, and Blazer74 for being cowinners of the final week. Normally, that’s a perfect score, but this week, it’s just a 5/9. But a win’s still a win, right? Meanwhile, with nine whole games to pick, you’d have to be a complete idiot to get every single one wrong, and I’m happy to let you all know that idiot is me. 0/9. Maybe it’s a sign I should finally hang it up.

Alright, now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. But first, I do want to note that even with all this year’s cancellations, only two of the 75 games featured in this year’s picks got cancelled. One was the Sun Belt championship, and the other was back in week two, making for a 98.5% success rate on the games I (or Ben, in one case) personally selected (i.e. not the championships). If I wasn’t going to be good at picking the actual results of these games, at least I did a good job of picking them out.

Now, without further ado....

The 2020 FTRS Picks Final Standings

In fifth, with 40 points, THE MACHINE. Machine suffered a late season swoon after holding the lead for a good while, but still rounds out the top five despite just straight up missing a week.

In fourth, with 41 points, ClavinCliff. Cliff has participated every year and this is their highest ever finish, after just missing the top five two years ago.

Tied for second, with 42 points, AHolt and GTBuzzed. You can split and weld your imaginary 2rd/3nd place medals, if you like.

And finally, in first place, with 43 points, the winner of the 2020 FTRS Picks is.....

Trystan Snipes

Trystan emerged from parts unknown this year and took gold in their first time playing. Beginner’s luck? Maybe. Or maybe it’s something..... bigger. But probably not.

Thanks again to everyone who participated this year. If I didn’t mention your name, you can find it below, even if you only played for one week. And if something looks off to you, let me know and I’ll fix it. Until next time, enjoy whatever non-football things that are out there, and remember........
