Would an ACC team really get more money in the SEC or B1G if they leave?

The mailbag is brought to you by Section 103, home of the most unique and comfortable Georgia Tech apparel.

Burdell91: Are the SEC or B1G really going to give FSU or Clemson (or North Carolina, Miami, whoever else) more money than they get from the ACC? It seems most new conference members are not getting full shares (some for a long time IIRC). Does Clemson have some new argument that makes it worthwhile for them to jump in the court (rather than wait to see how FSU’s fight goes)?

Ben: The short answer is yes. The long answer is that as the SEC and B1G continue to consolidate more college football powers, that is soon where most (if not all) the major money will be.

tyler_pifer92: This isn’t really a question, but CDS continues to recruit at a high level with a commitment from 4* Center Doryan Onwuchekwa, pushing us to the #13 class in the country. If we are able to land one of Justin Pippen and Daquan Davis Tech will have a top 10 class.

Fill in the end of this statement. This is the most excited you’ve been about Georgia Tech Basketball since _______.

Ben: I don’t know that I’ve ever been as optimistic about the future of Georgia Tech basketball. At this point, it comes to how CDS can get his guys to play.

tyler_pifer92: Why has the ACC fallen off as a basketball conference?

Ben: My main guess would be that there’s more money in the game nowadays, so there are more viable options. But I also don’t follow college basketball super closely, so take it with a grain of salt.

Asa: I’m sure there are about 100 different factors behind the decline of the ACC, but one that I’d like to highlight is the departure of several Hall of Fame coaches. Without the allure of playing for a great coach, there is less of an incentive for top-tier players to go to schools like Notre Dame, Syracuse, Louisville, and even Duke or North Carolina. This trend will likely continue with Leonard Hamilton, Jim Larrañaga, and possibly Tony Bennet all nearing the end of their careers.

DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Now that what were once violations are now a proven business model and the cost of doing business, can any case be made that Reggie Bush should NOT get his Heisman back and the 2009 ACC Championship should NOT be returned to North Ave.?

Ben: If you break a law that later gets overturned, did you still break the law? Yes. If my toddler decides they don’t want to go to bed until 9:00 p.m. even though their bedtime is 7:30 p.m., will they still have gotten in trouble when they get older and they have a later bedtime? Yes.

What grade as Damon Stoudamire earned after Year 1?

The mailbag is brought to you by Section 103, home of the most unique and comfortable Georgia Tech apparel.

tyler_pifer92: Year 1 under Damon Stoudamire officially complete. What grade would you give him?

I predicted 19-12 (11-9) if everything went our way and my realistic prediction was 15-16 (8-12). I did not have us having beating Duke and UNC and given the job he’s done recruiting, I’ll give him a B-

Ben: I think it’s tough to give him a letter grade. Or at the very least, I think it would be difficult for a letter grade to accurately grade the season. It was very up and down, so saying an average grade wouldn’t describe that well. Given that it’s first season, I’ll say he earns a satisfactory mark.

Logan: Like a C+, maybe a B-? The results were a bit under .500 on the season which is kind of where I expected us to end up. There were some fun upsets, as far as a 1st season for Stoudamire goes this one was just kind of middle of the road.

Anuj Bhyravabhotla: We’ve already talked about Buster Faulkner and/or Chris Weinke potentially getting poached and we just saw Josh Crawford get poached. But here’s something interesting; with how well we were able to run the ball and the general better state of the offense, how long until Geep Wade gets poached? And will it be a lateral move or a vertical move?

Ben: Georgia Tech’s offensive line will have to continue to improve, but if it does, I could certainly see Wade taking a lateral move to show that the OL is his and not the head coach’s.

DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Thoughts on Saban’s comments on College Sports during round table.

Logan: Generally speaking I think he’s right. I’m not sure if all students purely make decisions based on money, but I imagine most do and I would too if I was a student athlete. We definitely need some kind of revenue sharing or at least regulation for the NIL. Boosters have always paid players, but the amount they are paying is getting to the point where it will be unsustainable in the future. I do wish he had spoken more on the greed of the conferences as well, this isn’t news to anyone but the greed of all the conferences to rake in this tv money is also getting out of hand and putting CFB as we know it in a dangerous position for the future.

TkTheGoat: Big news for fball transfer portal. We landed Penn St. DT Jordan Van den Berg and that FSU DT. Along with other defensive transfers and new DC, can you realistically see Tech winning the ACC?? If Offense stays the same as last year and D improves it will probably be around 8-4. But if D overhaul is success and offense improves as well, could we be looking at 10+ wins or even a spot in the 12 team plyf?

Ben: We just had our first winning season since the 2010s. Let’s take off the gold-colored glasses for a bit. It would take an incredibly dramatic shift on defense for that to happen. I think Tech has a chance to be more in play for the ACC than they were this season, but I think that’s far from the expectation.

Logan: Let’s slow our roll a bit on the expectations here. I think this team has gotten a lot of talent, debatably the most talent we’ve had since the start of the millennium, but this is also going to be a really tough season schedule wise. Notre Dame, FSU, Miami, Louisville, UNC, and some other team from the state of Georgia which are just as talented if not more so than we are. I’m not going to write off our chances to be win more than 8 games, but we will have to get some big wins at neutral sites and on the road if we really expect to make the playoffs.

Submitted via email: Hey guys,

Hope all is well for you. Sorry that it’s been a while, I’ve been busy. Baseball has had a rough start and basketball seemed to stumble on its way across the finish line. Softball has been impressive though, so that’s a good situation.

I tend to bury my head in the sand regarding other things going on in Atlanta sports, but since we’re in a bit of a lull for GT news right now, what other sports news in the Atlanta area should I be aware of? Y’all have a good one.

The City of Raleigh

Logan: I guess the Falcons want to win some more games since they signed Kirk Cousins. Braves are looking pretty good in spring training. That’s about the extent of my knowledge on Atlanta sports.

Ben: Yeah, Logan took mine. I was also gonna mention Kirk Cousins. I don’t follow the NFL enough to really know if that’s a good or a bad move, but any contract that has an AAV of over $40 million is going to have me looking with a suspicious eye. The Falcoholic did a breakdown of the contract that makes me less critical of it.

What is Danny Hall’s Legacy when it’s all said and done?

The mailbag is brought to you by Section 103, home of the most unique and comfortable Georgia Tech apparel.

tyler_pifer92: MBB has won 4 of their last 5. What has been the biggest difference that has led to the late season renaissance?

Rob: To me, the team just seems to be playing a lot harder and seems more focused and where I see this translating the most is on the defensive side. Comparing the last 5 games (4-1 record) to the previous 14 games (2-12), we can see that the scoring has not really changed much. Our points per games is marginally up from 70.1 ppg to 71.4 ppg, our FG% is nearly identical, and our turnovers per game are actually up slightly. However, when you look at the defensive side of the court, opponent scoring is down from 79.1 ppg to 72.4 ppg. Another sign of making the hustle plays? Rebounds per game are up from 31.2 per game to 39.8 per game and opponent rebounds per game are down from 34.4 per game to 27.2 per game. In other words, Tech has gone from getting outrebounded by opponents by about 3 rebounds per game to outrebounding opponents by about 13 points per game. That’s an absolutely massive change.

tyler_pifer92: What is Danny Hall’s Legacy when it’s all said and done?

Ben: I think it will depend on how closely you followed Georgia Tech baseball during his tenure. The general public will probably remember him fondly, as someone who kept GT relatively competitive throughout his entire tenure. I’m too lazy to look this up right now, but I’m also pretty sure he’s the winningest coach in GT Baseball history. On that alone, the general public will view him favorably. However, if you follow the team more closely, I think there will always be a lingering sense of what could have been better about his tenure.

Partywaggin: Are we the only ones that care about combined HR’s since we’re in 1st place?

Jack: It’s a cool stat! Not often in the mix of 400+ softball + baseball teams do you get the same school in the top 10 of both. We’re going to push it because it’s a rare thing where we can point to multiple teams at the Institute thriving within a single fact producing at high levels. Beyond that, the teams see this stuff. It’s (hopefully) informative and uplifting.

chilidogringsFO: Has MBB hit a true turning point? What do you expect in the ACC tournament?

Jack: I’m about 60% sure they have. I imagine we wouldn’t be thinking about this question if Ndongo’s shot doesn’t go in at Wake, but that game was good enough regardless of that one shot to merit this question.

I want to reiterate the working theory I have that this team is playing like the 2021-2022 Boston Celtics, Ime Udoka’s first year coaching the team where Damon was on the staff. It took a really long time for them to adjust to the coaching style but also to the detox Udoka pressed hard on them to play fully unselfish basketball. He was as hard on them as just about any coach in the NBA will dare to be, and it built an immensely strong base for that team we’ve seen play out over the last three seasons. There’s similarities between Damon and Ime here, and they just might be finding a way to turn the corner now.

Rob: I touched on this slightly in the previous question, but this team seems to be playing with more energy and focus recently and I do think we have hit a turning point. It’s hard to say we are going to go on some crazy run in the ACC tournament, but we have definitely seen that this team can compete with anyone in the conference any given night.

Jellopacket98: GT baseball team should really be 7-4 after getting swept by that other team. How concerned are you that our season is going to end after the ACC tournament yet again?

Ben: It feels like a rinse and repeat of most seasons. Hitting is strong, pitching is meh, and that’s not enough. I won’t be surprised to see us not make it past the ACC tournament this year.

rdmjr: can someone explain to me how Wake Forest shot 20 free thows to Tech’s 2? Is it simply referees favoring the home team or was Wake not playing defense?

Ben: I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I don’t know for sure. I’m more inclined to think it had to do with the players playing instead of the refs.

Ben: I generally just don’t listen to coach’s comments at all. In the heat of the moment, they are (more often than not) just going to say how they feel. Most of the time, it isn’t anything of substance.

tyler_pifer92: Let’s play a game of “What If?”

What’s your favorite Jimmy Buffett song?

DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Yo, Parrotheads, we never did a power rank of favorite songs by the Son of a Son of a Sailor upon his sailing away, what say y’all?

Ben: Never been the biggest Jimmy Buffett fan, but I certainly enjoy Margaritaville, which is probably the most cliché answer.

Jellopacket98: Not sure if this has been asked before, but what are your opinions on a football helmet with a logo of Buzz on the side for a game or two? The traditional Gold helmets with GT on the side have pretty much been tossed aside, so why not give Buzz a shot?

Ben: In theory, it could be fine, but I think I would have to see it to have a real reaction.

Jack: They’ll still wear the traditional gold helmet. I’d be shocked if that fully gets removed from the rotation next season. The white looks good and we were winning more often than not in it, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why it kept getting worn. I love the Buzz idea, and that’s the only reason I’m willing to concede we should wear black. My favorite idea is putting the Reck on the helmets.

Frodo Swagginz: With the new NCAA Football game coming out, what are your expectations for GT’s offense and defense ratings? And naturally players like King, Haynes, and Singleton

Ben: The defense is going to be ranked very poorly. The offense probably a bit higher. King and Haynes would probably be the highest-ranked.

tyler_pifer92: Both Rick Pitino and Damon Stoudamire went after their teams hard in press conferences this week. The obvious difference is that while RP personally called out specific players, DS was much more broad.

Do you have an issue with these types of comments or do you think it’s fair game?

Ben: Generally, I don’t like when coaches throw players under the bus. No matter if they are the players who were there or the ones who were brought in, at the end of the day, wins and losses fall on the coach.

Rob: This topic actually had our slack thread a bit divided. I didn’t love the comments but I don’t want them to be taken too much out of context. While Damon did say that the players “quit” in the final 8 minutes of the game, he also noted that that is a reflection on him.

Submitted via email: What does Brent Key need to do in order to put together a winning streak longer than two games?

Ben: It sounds simple, but the answer is just having that game-to-game consistency. Under Brent Key, Georgia Tech tends to have some boneheaded games right after doing something crazy.

Jack: Schedule Georgia State, VMI, and Syracuse back to back. Oh hey! We did that!
