The Georgia Tech basketball team will make their 2019-2020 home debut Monday night when Elon comes to town. The Jackets have played Elon three times previously, the last time in 2006, and have won all three matchups.
Elon has a new head coach this season after firing former head coach Matt Matheny after a decade at the helm. In early April, Mike Schrage was named as the new head coach. Schrage comes from an impressive coaching tree, working as an assistant at Ohio State and serving under both Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.
Elon is off to a 2-0 start this season, though both wins have come against non-D1 teams. They started the season with a 90-84 win over Mars Hill, following that victory up with a 95-54 win over Milligan.
Marcus Sheffield, who transferred to Elon from Stanford, is off to a hot start, averaging 17.5 points per game and 7.5 assists per game through two contests. Freshman guard Hunter McIntosh is also off to a good start. The graduate of Greater Atlanta Christian School was named the Georgia 3A player of the year in 2018. Through two games, he’s scoring 14 points per game.
Elon has numerous other players providing contributions in an extended role this season after losing their top three scorers from a season ago, including Tyler Seibring, one of the most decorated players in program history.
Elon finished just 11-21 last year. The loss of their top three scorers certainly hurts them, but the addition of Sheffield is a pretty big one for a program like Elon. That said, Tech should have no trouble in this one.
Georgia Tech athletics is offering complimentary tickets for the game to all military personnel and first responders through VetTix.
The game will tipoff at 7:30pm EST.
