Early this afternoon, Georgia Tech received their second commitment for the class of 2018, following JaQuez Jackson’s commitment last night. Safety Charlie Thomas from Thomaston, GA chose Georgia Tech over several other major offers, namely Auburn and Ole Miss. He is now the second defensive commit and the second commitment in as many days.

Despite being recruited as a safety, many of Thomas’ highlights are from different areas of the field. He shows his athleticism by making big plays at wide receiver, quarterback, and kick returner. But I’m mainly interested in his defensive plays. I see some things I like, and some things that I’d like to see him do better. I’m not sure if it’s the defensive scheme that his school plays, but he seems to make a lot of plays well after the line of scrimmage. I would like to see somebody with his athletic advantage being more aggressive and making more plays further up the field. Once he gets near the ball carrier though, he does a fantastic job. He hits hard and with solid form and causes several fumbles throughout the video. There is not much video of him in coverage.
He has good height at 6’2” and while there is a highlight or two of his busting through a blocker he will likely need to bulk up from his 180 pounds to play at the college level. I am excited to see him join the Georgia Tech secondary and I hope to see him causing havoc all over the field someday. Welcome to the Flats Charlie!
