The Yellow Jackets baseball team is coming off of a momentum building series against a pretty good Buckeyes team. Although they couldn't pull the sweep, they played well and there were major positives to take from both games. The team's confidence will now be tested as Tech welcomes in the #1 ranked team in the country, UNC.
The Tarheels are 44-4 this season and are led by 3B Colin Moran. Moran has been a stud all season and is now a lock for the first round of the MLB Draft should he choose to leave school early. UNC also has an excellent pitching staff (#1 teams almost always do) and have a left handed ace by the name of Kent Emanuel. Emanuel has been great for them all year and he should get the start against Tech over the weekend, which is bad news for the Yellow Jackets. On the other hand, the Tarheels have lost 2 of their last 7 games, and Tech has a chance to beat them while they're off their game.
Although the Yellow Jackets haven't played great lately, they got two very impressive pitching performances from King and Heddinger against Ohio State, and they now have some momentum heading into this series. With Farmer and Isaacs ready to take the mound over the weekend, the team has a good chance to continue the great pitching of late. If the bats can show up, they have a legitimate chance to steal a win or two at home, which would be huge for the team going forward. Tech will likely be more motivated in this series and hopefully it translates into success.
The series begins tonight at 7 PM at Russ Chandler Stadium and continues tomorrow at 6 PM and Sunday at 1 PM. All three games will be broadcasted on ESPN3, which means the game won't be on TV. If you can, try to make it down to one of the games and cheer on the Yellow Jackets in arguably the biggest series of the season.
