No other Ga. Tech football coach was more committed to the school than William Alexander. He played for John Heisman, graduated from Tech with an engineering degree, worked under Heisman as an assistant, became head coach in 1920, even coached basketball for a few seasons, and later served as athletic director until his death in 1950. Alexander lead Tech to several conference championships, and a national championship in 1928. For a time during the Depression, he worked in good faith without pay, only receiving pay vouchers.
