What if the ACC went to pods next year with 14 teams? They could be laid out like this:
Pod A – BC, Syracuse, Pitt
Pod B – Maryland, Wake, NC St
Pod C – VT, UVa, UNC, Duke
Pod D – Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami
For Pod A, play the other 2, plus 2/3 of Pod B, plus 4/4 of either Pod C or D
(Pod B does just the opposite) 2 + 2 + 4 = 8 games
For Pod C, play the other 3, plus 2/4 of Pod D, plus 3/3 of either Pod A or B
(Pod D does the opposite). 3+2+3 = 8 games
You get to play the 4 Southern teams every year, and you only have to play 8 conference games per year. Even so, each player gets to play (and each student gets to watch) every team in the league home & away before he graduates – assuming he stays all 4 years.
What do you think? I describe the whole thing in detail on my blog – LINK.
