Annoyance

I live just oustside of Tuscaloosa. My wife works at the University. Their obsession with “Toliet Paper Detergent” is the most annoything thing on the face of the planet. I went to a game there last year to watch the GSU Eagles take on the “Detergent”. I have never been so nausieted in my life. They holler “Roll Tide” after almost everything. They are almost as bad as UT playing Rocky Top.

by PJ4Prez on Feb 2, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

I have Bama people in the family

they use “roll tide” as an expression akin to some unholy synthesis of “I tellya what” and “wow.”

They can have a conversation that goes like this:

1: Hey there! Roll Tide!
2: Oh hey! Roll Tide!
(high five or handshake)
1: How’s your momma?
2: Ah y’know…“roll tide.”
1: Ha, “roll tide!” You catch the game?
2: Oh, roll tide, I did!
(Simultaneously): Roll Tide!
1: Man, I can’t believe we beat LSU by that much, roll tide.
2: I know, it’s crazy! I was watchin’ it the whole time freakin’ out like “ROLL TAHD!”
(Simultaneously): Roll Tide!
2: Anyway, I gotta go. Daddy’s outta beer again, and he get ornery…
1: Ok, well Roll Tide!
2: Roll Tide!
(they part ways)

I visited Huntsville, AL once for business...

and I was shocked to find a few things…

First, what a letdown Bob Gibson’s BBQ chicken joint was (they did create a mayo-based white sauce for chicken that is phenomenal).

Second, that the patrons of Bob Gibson’s (especially the older females) enjoy wearing Alabama Crimson Tide clothing, and match it with their Alabama Crimson Tide purse and Alabama Crimson Tide earrings. Cheap white plastic with that annoying red A on it…everywhere.

I said up above, such homogenous identity scares the hell out of me. It would scare the hell out of me more if I had to live there and the football team was upon hard times. Entitlement doesn’t begin to explain it…

This is one reason

the existence of Auburn (as much as we need to continue to hate them) is a tolerable thing. Our neighboring state can never become 100% Bammers as long as Barners are still around.

rabblerabblerabble

is what I prefer. But seriously how bout them recruits?

Paul Johnson: not giving a crap about what you have to say since 1987.

by GTNate on Feb 1, 2012 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I am more excited about them recruits this year . . .

than I was about the recruits last year, and last year I was well pleased.

Listened to CPJ talk about this year’s class and at one point he was explaining why Tech does not offer 25 scholarships every year and why that is the right way to do it. Some one in the crowd asked him, “Do other schools just have more attrition than Tech?” To which Johnson replied, “Depends on how you define attrition?” Howls of laughter followed.

by Atlanta's original team on Feb 1, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Did he address...

the Todd Spencer firing, the Junior Gnonkonde matter, Will Adams, etc…?

"If you're looking around...then we're looking around" - Coach Paul Johnson

by TBuzz on Feb 1, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt he adressed Adams

and if he did it was probably something to the effect of “shut up, he doesn’t matter, its not important.” After which the person who asked the question fell back on their seat and started weeping softly.

by GTNate on Feb 1, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

He set the tone early and every one followed his lead

What a leader! He was relaxed, at ease, articulate except for one thing which I will get to at the end here. He began by talking about how excited he was about these recruits. He said these are guys who are going to win us some ballgames. He stated that we got exactly who we thought we would get and he was pleased with that. He then proceeded to discuss the Tech philosophy of recruiting. I would not do it justice if I tried to give a quick recap but suffice it to say, Tech does it right. He said at one point, “If you give 25 scholarships every year, you do the math. That does not add up to 85. We try to give just as many as we think we need, and that is the way it ought to be done.”

The reporters were charmed and acted gracious and asked intelligent questions. No one mentioned the Todd Spencer resignation and it would not have been appropriate for CPJ to have commented anyway since this was a Todd Spencer decision after some apparently terrible misjudgment.

The only thing I have ever had a quibble with in CPJ’s answers is that he does rely a little more than I would like on certain stock answers. How many times in a press conference have you heard him say, “I don’t know, its like anything else . .” ?

But that is getting pretty picky on my part when I consider the drivel that comes out of many coaches’ mouths.

by Atlanta's original team on Feb 2, 2012 7:39 AM EST up reply actions

yes

my favorite is his old standby “some guys mad some plays, others didn’t.”

Paul Johnson: not giving a crap about what you have to say since 1987.

by GTNate on Feb 2, 2012 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know, its like anything else...

First, use “it’s”, with the apostrophe. Remember, you claim to be a bastion of capitalization and grammar around here. ;-)
Second, I don’t think that phrase is a stock answer in so much as it is a filler like “uh” or “um”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use just that phrase as an answer. He starts with that phrase and then gives the real answer. A stock answer is when he answers the question by saying the team “needs to execute” and “not turn the ball over”. “It is what it is” could arguably be a stock answer for CPJ, though I’ve found that it usually follower to an answer. For example: “I don’t know, it’s like anything else… [CPJ pontificates]. It is what it is.”

by Dive Keep and Pitch on Feb 2, 2012 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

That is why I trailed off with the . . .

He always says something. It is just that these stock phrases begin to get repetitive. I said this was might picky though.

What is really annoying is typing fast and wanting to just get something put on the screen and then realizing that it has typos or grammatical issues. Always, always unintentional. When I am feeling less lazy I will care even more.

by Atlanta's original team on Feb 2, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Attaboy, Coach!

Also, consider CPJ “attaboy’d” for suggesting to D-Rad that Coach Spencer be canned immediately for repeated and block-headed violation of NCAA policies.

(I apologize if I have offended anyone whose head is shaped like a block. Coach Paul Johnson, however, does not. He doesn’t care about this, but if he did he would tell you to make your momma proud and stop being shaped like that. Also, you need to dive at this bag shaped like a D-lineman for 4 hours and tell him what you’ve learned about life. He still won’t care.)

by JohnHeisman on Feb 1, 2012 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

I have commented before on the hatred

It is something I learned decades ago. There are people whose whole lives revolve around their team (note, I didn’t say their school because many of these offenders did not go to the college whose team they root for) and, any rival in spitting distance is a threat to their small, orderly little world. As a result they do everything they can to try (in their mind) to disrupt the stability of opposing teams and their institutions. I am amazed at how often some of these will pose as Tech fans and go on chat rooms and say CPJ should be fired. Happens regularly. They are looking for any little perceived imperfection they can find so they can try to drive a wedge between members of the Tech community. It is really, really small stuff. It has parallels in the way our current political system operates but I won’t get into that since it opens up real wounds. But let us just say that depersonalizing people for the sake of your own small sense of security and keeping the world spinning the way you think it ought to is the sole purpose of an awful lot of lives these days.

by Atlanta's original team on Feb 2, 2012 7:48 AM EST up reply actions

To piggyback...

I think there are people out there who actually believe “if I say if loud enough, if I say it proud enough, and if I say as many times as I can” then it doesn’t matter if what I’m saying is true or not. These imbeciles’ arguments rely on the ideological and the subjective. That is a recent political phenomenon of the Internet age that like AOT I won’t get into.

I would also say what “fuels the faux fire” is the fact that CPJ does things differently than most people. He operates a run-heavy TO offense in an AQ conference, and does it successfully no matter how many times his annual opponents face him. He recruits with integrity. If you commit to GT, you keep your spot and it doesn’t get shopped around. Apparently this is a hypocritical practice to some who think “normal recruiting” involves getting as many kids to commit as possible…then shaving off the worst ones at the last minute to hit your number.

Tech fans generally contain far more graduates and alumni per capita than most of the other local fanbases…and whether we explicitly say it or not…I think we would sacrifice the prospects of regularly winning 10+ games a year for the preservation of our Academic standards. And for the job offers that BJ Machen, Albert Rocker, and Anthony Ebuniwe (of recent note) get once they complete school.

If I’m not mistaken…This is why we go to college…not to have our campused ravaged by rednecks 7 nights out of the year who think school support means shaving their heads and painting it red and black and not refraining from urinating and defecating in the campus buildings.

Having lived in Birmingham for 8 long years,

I can tell you in a very clear and certain voice. Never envy anything in Alabama. We had a saying, lo those many years ago, “The best thing coming out of Alabama is I-20.”

near the New Jersey state line. They take note that the tolls and bridges only charge you to leave New Jersey…and it’s “money well spent”.

Hey, believe it or not there are some nice places in New Jersey

In my youthful hitchhiking days I slept a lot of times in places where “George Washington slept.” The old joke is, “That’s why they call him the father of the nation.” But anyway, places like Madison, Jockey Hollow, the Dodge Estate, the drive toward Hacketstown, many of the reserves and parks are nice. And in spite of that awful, awful, reality show, some of the Jersey shore is spectacularly beautiful. There is a real reason why is is called the Garden State also. That is not just marketing, no pun intended.

On the other hand. There is some pretty awful urban sprawl, industrial armpits, some of the most polluted wet lands in the country and some serious inner city poverty. Add to that a political environment that has always had a criminal element and you can quickly see the downside.

No contest. NJ is a garden compared to Alabama.
