Facts about the GT-Clemson Series

Joshua S. Kelly-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

This article was to be published Friday, though it was written before the changeover to SBN United that ended in stuff getting weird. Here it is, for your reading pleasure. Thanks Bird! - LilBroey

I just wanted to share some interesting facts about the Clemson rivalry. Georgia Tech and Clemson have met 77 times on the gridiron since 1898. The greatest gap in the series occured between 1922 and 1932. Tech and Clemson failed to play for 3,619 days. The temporary cessation most likely was due to the fact that Tech had won 12 straight from 1908 to 1922. This period encompassed Clemson's worst stretch in the rivalry as Clemson failed to defeat Tech one time over a 26 year period. I hope that puts 7 or 8 year droughts in perspective for everyone.

Clemson's best run against Tech came at a much later period of the rivalry. From 1986-1996, Clemson won 8 of 11 meetings. Clemson outscored Tech by a solid touchdown per game during this era.

And speaking of scoring margin, Tech averages 20.6 points per game to Clemson's 16.4 all-time. The greatest margins of victory were +73 points by Clemson in 1903 and +51 points by Tech in 1944. Clemson has been shut out 12 times while Tech has only been shut out 3 times. 30 of 77 total contests were decided by one possession (39%) while 16 of the last 22 games have been decided by less than a touchdown (73%).
