With this weekend's matchup between Georgia Tech and Boston College on the horizon, FTRS takes a look at things we should know about the opponent.
Win: Maine (34-3)
Losses: Miami (41-32), @Northwestern (22-13), Clemson (45-31), @Army (34-31), @Florida State (51-7)
Boston College has had a lot of tough losses this year in games they were able to keep relatively close. Their worst loss of the year so far is by far to an Army team whose only win so far was in that game.
Head Coach: Frank Spaziani since 2009 (21-24 overall, 12-15 ACC)
Spaziani has a lynch mob out for his head come season's end. BC has gotten worse and worse every year under the fourth-year head coach, as the team has seen a digression from an 8-win Emerald Bowl team, to 4 wins last year and 1 win so far this year with Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and NC State yet to play. Reminds me of the situation at my other favorite school, Louisville, which saw the program nearly fall apart in 3 years under Steve Kragthorpe following an Orange Bowl win under Bobby Petrino. For reference, see BCInterruption's article profiling the case for firing Spaziani before they even get to Atlanta.
Stats (Nat'l Ranking): 280.5 Passing Yds/Game (34th), 103.3 Rushing Yds/Game (113th), 24.7 Pts/Game (86th), 32.7 Pts Allowed/Game (99th)
In the past, we've always known Boston College to be, if nothing else, a defensively impressive team. This year they're far from that, featuring a 117th-ranked rushing defense that may turn out to be the medicine that Tech needs to get their offense kick-started going into the rest of the season.
Leading Passer: Chase Rettig (1,648, 55.7%, 11 TD's, 4 INTs)
Rettig is not what you would call accurate (Tevin's completion percentage is over 62%, for reference), and with 7.17 yards/attempt it seems that he's had success in sheer volume of attempts alone.
Leading Rusher: Andre Williams (99 carries, 473 yards, 4.8 yds/carry, 4 TD's)
This sounds a lot more impressive than it actually is. When you take into account that over 20% of those yards came on one single carry (he had a 99-yard TD run against Army), the rest of them come back down to Earth. On his other 98 carries, he has 374 yards and 3 TD's , with an average of 3.8 yards/carry.
Leading Receiver: Alex Amidon (41 Rec, 688 Yards, 4 TD's)
Amidon has well over twice as many receptions as any other receiver on the Eagles, and figures to get much of Chase Rettig's attention in this game. However, he has slowed down reception-wise in the last two games (perhaps other defenses figured out that he was the main guy worth watching).
2007 (BC 24, GT 10)
No need to explain this one. This was a game where Georgia Tech was demolished by two R's - Refs and Ryan.
2008 (GT 19, BC 16)
In Paul Johnson's second game as head coach, the Jackets got a little revenge and scored 9 in the 4th quarter to beat a Boston College team that would win the Atlantic and go on to play in the Music City Bowl.
What do you think, Tech fans? Think we can take Boston College this weekend to get a jump-start on the rest of our season? Think we should take them more seriously than a lot of fans seem to be?
