Welcome to Georgia Tech's National Signing Day!
Updates will be added to this thread in the comments section as LOIs are received in the morning while Joey and Nate are LIVE from The Edge Center inside of Bobby Dodd Stadium in scenic Midtown Atlanta. Or just follow us and all the action on Twitter -- @FTRSRecruiting!
Y'all betta hide yo' recruits, hide yo commits, and hide yo scholarship offers 'cause they poachin' ERRBODY out here!
Wednesday, February 1st has been on an awful lot of college football fans' calendars for a long time now, as it is the first day that kids can sign Letters of Intent (LOIs) to legally commit to play football for NCAA institutions. To cover Georgia Tech's coverage, we'll be LIVE from the Edge Center starting at 7am Wednesday morning. To get prepared for the day though, here's the state of our current recruiting situation:
Signed a LOI (read: early enrollment)
3* ATH (QB) Dennis Andrews, 5'11", 190lb, Tallahassee, FL
Solid commitments (the guys who are committed and have told us this and actually aren't going other places):
4* ATH (QB) Justin Thomas, 5'11", 175lb, Prattville, AL
4* DE Francis Kallon, 6'5", 260lb, Lawrenceville, GA
3* ATH (BB/LB) Marcus Allen, 6'2", 210lb, Hilliard, FL
3* WR/DB Anthony Autry, 6'2", 180lb, Norcross, GA
3* OL Freddie Burden, 6'3", 290lb, Statesboro, GA
3* DE Rod Chungong, 6'3", 250lb, Olney, MD
3* DT Pat Gamble, 6'5", 275lb, Carrollton, GA
3* S Lynn Griffin, 6'0", 206lb, Jacksonville, FL
3* ATH (WR/LB) Travin Henry, 6'4", 228lb, Adele, GA
3* OL Chase Roberts, 6'3", 285lb, Norcross, GA
3* LB Tyler Stargel, 6'3", 250lb, Gulf Shores, AL
3* ATH (WR) Michael Summers, 6'1", 190lb, Statesboro, GA
3* DB D.J. White, 5'10", 180lb, McDonough, GA
2* DT Adam Gotsis, 6'4", 290lb, Melbourne, Australia (might possibly be the greatest 2* signing of the year by anyone)
2* P Ryan Rodwell, 6'2", 215lb, DeLand, FL
Otherwise (the reason tomorrow is exciting) -- after The Jump....
3* CB Antonio Crawford -- If you haven't heard, he flipped from us to Miami, and will officially be one of about 7 or 8 guys in that class who is looking to play CB. Good luck to this guy when it comes to seeing the field. /kindabitter
4* DT Dalvin Tomlinson -- Currently between us, Alabama, and uga, by which I mean us and Alabama. He's reportedly made his decision, but isn't telling anyone until Wednesday. All 3 schools have sent him a Letter of Intent in hopes that he'll sign it, and popular theories stated that if he got one from Alabama, he'd sign it and join the Tide. We'll see how it all ends up, but it doesn't currently look good for the Jackets.
3* OL Will Adams -- Kid's been committed to us since the summer (and still is, officially), but when offered a last minute visit by Auburn this past weekend, he took it. Then he turned them down, affirming his commitment to Georgia Tech, causing Georgia Tech to cancel a visit for another 3* OL that's committed to Rutgers. Then he changed his mind again and actually visited them, and upon leaving, was reportedly a "coin flip" between us and Auburn. He's said that he's still officially committed to Tech, but now it's looking more and more like he'll sign with Auburn, according to Kelly Quinlan. One of the more disappointing stories surrounding GT recruiting this year.
3* LB Beau Hankins -- He was a last-minute visitor with us last weekend and really enjoyed his visit. He's put us up there as one of his favorites with Arkansas and Penn State among others, and Quinlan expects there's reason to think we're the favorite at this point and that we'll be getting a letter with his signature on Wednesday morning. Time will tell though. Hankins won't make-or-break the class, but he'd be a nice addition nonetheless, and it's always a thing of pride saying you had a commitment who was wanted by a top-10 team in the country.
3* LB Harding Harper -- There has been some rumbling about this kid. He's pretty high on Arkansas and some thought he might be a package deal with Hankins wherever they decided to go. However, none of that is true, and he doesn't even have an offer from Tech according to sources. So if anyone says anything about him to you, tell them they're wrong and punch them in the face, as Saint Johnson has taught us.
Here's to hoping that National Signing Day is good to the Tech football program. We have a good recruiting class so far, but retaining Adams and signing Hankins and Tomlinson would make for a fantastic Wednesday for our program. There are more possibilities for signing in the next couple weeks, after NSD, but that's for another time. We'll be with you at 7am tomorrow to give live updates on whose letters have arrived!

I think most of this drama will be bad...
I’m sure all kinds of calls are going out tonight. If you remember this time last year, we lost WR Airyn Willis and picked up LB Mark Harrell (both to/from Wake Forest)…so there’s always a last-minute deal of some sort going on. Plus we have some extra spots.
However, barring this same last-minute dealings that Alabama will do, Tomlinson looks like he’s going to Tuscaloosa. He is what would have made this a great class (on par with 2007).
Adams and Crawford are done deals to Auburn and Miami, respectively. I wish them luck climbing their respective depth charts and getting their top-notch educations.
On the bright side, there will be a handful of deserving walk-ons likely get consideration for scholarship offers…guys like Xzavier Ward, Timmy Byerly, Robby Godhigh, and others.

Good job
In addition to what we know (because of your good work) there is also the possibility that some other stuff is out there brewing around. That other stuff may be far-fetched or a slim chance in hell, but we dealing with some crazy 18 year olds this year.
By the way, I am not encouraging any chatter about this. At this point I feel like we are creeping up on a very skittish animal in the woods. Be very quiet.

Great picture of a rare "Clemessee" fan.
They only live in deep in the mountains of the GA/TN/NC border are extremely camera shy and dangerous when filmed. This specimen obviously did not hear you sneak up on him. They won’t hesitate to shoot anything wearing red, blue, gold, or black. But they will hire the frattiest of head coaches to lead disappointing teams in eye-burning shades of orange in front of over 80 thousand people who can’t remember why they’re cheering…most just heard noise and came to scream along.

Freddie Burden! This o-lineman committed about two weeks ago and is a “large young man.” His father played RB for NC State and was the ACC player of the year in 1983 so he’s got football blood. Coach Owens says he hopes to make an “immediate impact.”

Number 3...
Coach Buzz Preston announces Dennis Andrews as number 3! He will be enrolling eearly next spring and is a shifty QB from Tally. His recruiting video just showed him pulling an animal move jumping over a guy to get to the endzone and a LOT of work out of the shotgun, which gave me the giggles because he seems to be more of a proven arm than guys we normally go after!

number 7...
They’re really rollin in now. Coach Kelly introduces Anthony Autry! He’s on the 6’3" side of of 6’2", about 180 with room to grow. He’s all state, and can play on both sides of the ball consistently. “He was one of the guys I was most excited about.” He looks like he needs some time in the weight room to get great, but the staff is confident he’ll get there.
Paul Johnson: not giving a crap about what you have to say since 1987.
number 8...
Coach McCollum introduces Chase Roberts 6’3", 290. He wanted to be at GT from the get to, and he BLASTS off the line. “He gets on the line and whips people, he likes and makes them like it.” Coach McCollum is especially excited to be this guy and how tough he is. He also kind of looks like Sean Bedford, except bigger.
Paul Johnson: not giving a crap about what you have to say since 1987.

Coach Bohannon introduces “the longest arms on a prospect I’ve ever seen,” Patrick Gamble. He’s a big ol’ boy, plays basketball and looks like it. He’s never wavered in his commitment, and is a “GT kid all the way.” Another example of this staff’s excellent eye for talent.

I see this as the perfect analogy for a lot of recruits that go to Bama.
They might sign with them, but come next year’s class….SURPRISE!!! You’re going to NW Bama Ag College because we don’t need you any more.

I heard we can really thank FSU for not getting Tomlinson
They apparently signed the #1 DT that if Bama had gotten then Tomlinson would have been edged out
Yup, Eddie Goldman
Still, Tomlinson would’ve played this fall with us and will likely redshirt for the Tide.
The Church of Paul Johnson - There's not much to it outside of whooping ass and giving haters the finger. To HELL With georgie!
Bama have 5 defensive tackles signed in this class
I still don’t see why Tomlinson would choose them anyways, even if Bama didn’t get Goldman. 5 tackles in one class is a ton.
The only way those guys all become starters is if one or two get injured and a couple go to the NFL early.
Or maybe the plan is to ignite competition and take the top 3, and let the other two go see what else is out there for them.
The Church of Paul Johnson - There's not much to it outside of whooping ass and giving haters the finger. To HELL With georgie!
At least one or two
will disappear at some point. They’ll find a way to pare it down to 2 tackles, one way or another.
'Bama attrition
There was a bit of a discussion in a previous blog post about ‘Bama have a lot of player attrition. If that’s the case, then Tomlinson may not be buried as deep on the depth chart as it seems (as acedarney has alluded to). Of course, that also means Tomlinson has to be good enough to avoid being one of the players who are part of the attrition. Time will tell.

It is a good DL class...
Kallon, Gamble, Chungong, and Gotsis are a good group…though not right away maybe. Tomlinson would have probably made it stellar, but we have future starters and impact players here.

Supposedly there will be a ceremony later today. By my count there are maybe as many as three more that might come through in the next day or two.

Steffon Diggs will not announce today
One of the more highly sought recruits in the country, receiving interest from 30 colleges and offers from major powers, is going to make a trip to Maryland before he decides. My guess is that if Maryland can prove it has its act together then that would be the logical step. If not, Tech is on the table. But so are a lot of other schools. We have more room for him however.

I am disappointed in a couple of things.
1. Paul Johnson’s ability to recruit, or at least close the deal. He lets so much talent get away. Last year we had a top pass rusher is Darrius Caldwell and a top ranked DE/DT in Stephon Tuitt. They both were commited at one time, but somehow he lost them to Illinois and Notre Dame. This year we probably could have had DE/DT Dalvin Tomlinson, DE/OLB Junior Gnonkonde, CB/WR Antonio Crawford, and OT Will Adams. We lost them too though.
2. Why do guys like Tomlinson even want to play for people like Nick Saban? He would have thown him to the side if he could have gotten Eddie Goldmen. Not to mention the way that Saban over recruits, it’s just classless.
I’ll give coach Johnson credit for being able to find talent in lower ranked players. We just need to be able to develop them into quality football players.
Here's two of my cents...don't spend it all in one place.
1) Maybe it’s our coaches, but maybe it’s our reputation. Consider how much sexier (in football terms) a place like Bama, Auburn, Notre Dame or, yes, maybe even Illinois could be to a football recruit than little old Georgia Tech of the ACC. The only two solutions are beating UGA and playing in Charlotte a lot more often. It is the ONLY way I see to earn a reputation for ourselves that will seal the tougher deals. Clemson and FSU seem to parlay having large stadia, Nike apparel and semi-regular wins over SEC rivals into great recruiting. We should be set up to do the same, but we pretty much stopped beating UGA regularly back in the 70’s and 80’s, and our brand image has been allowed to languish. We’re selling a smaller stadium (and that matters to an 18 year old), an off-brand uniform, and a poor record against UGA (a team with plenty of appeal to football recruits.) The kids we get always seem to mention academics and fitting our system. That is not what we hear elite recruits say when committing to SEC programs. They get excited about the brand image and they “feel at home” there. To national recruits we’re a joke. We’re not winning the fashion show or the trophy case comparisons. So what can CPJ and company really do about all that? Winning hardware and reversing our in-state reputation sure would help him out.
2) Tomlinson could care less about Saban. He, like every other recruit, is star-struck by playing for a team that is THE benchmark of college football success right now. He can now say “I play for Alabama” and people will marvel at that. Also, when you sign you receive thousands of dollars in Nike Gear (I have a Bama athlete in the family…the clothing options are endless. It is like literally going to the Nike Outlet but everything is Tide swag.) There is no way GT can sell against that OTHER than to negatively recruit against it with comments about academics, location and playing time. It’s is an uphill battle the whole way.
I met her on the campus, sir, cheering the Brave and Bold.
1) What more do you want him to do? This class has 4-star guys (Kallon, Thomas), 2-star guys with athletiscism and potential (Gotsis, Travin Henry), and a slew of athletic 3-star recruits. If being higher on the recruiting ranking even mattered, you would have to rank it not by points (which is incredibly idiotic) but by average stars. We are much higher ranked in that regard. Tomlinson would have been a great addition, no doubt. It would have likely have catapulted this class up there with the 2007 class. It’s still a pretty dern good class
We can surely live without Gnonkonde, Adams, and Crawford. They were each arguably our 3rd choice at each position, and the fact they were eventually scooped up by UNC, Auburn, and Miami respectively means that they were pretty decent players. By the way, CPJ had signed them all early when they were each either unranked or rated at 2-stars.
Stephon Tuitt was a primadonna who de-committed from ND, committed to GT for 1 day, and then re-committed back to ND. This the kind of wishy-washy kid representing your institution? He probably did his act to help out his Grayson teammate Demond Smith, but honestly I don’t think we need to be singing happy birthday to kids like these.
2) DT plays for Nick Saban the same reason Tech IE and Mgmt graduates put themselves through the ringer at a Consulting firm like Accenture, Manhattan, or the like…when plenty of good, steady jobs exist at steady small-to-medium size companies. You do it because you think it will give you a leg up on your career.
I have yet to see an entire Alabama class worth of players get drafted into the NFL at once…just like those IE grads burn out and don’t all become CEO’s or executives and eventually value the stability of good companies and more modest ambitions.
"If you're looking around...then we're looking around" - Coach Paul Johnson
keep in mind
that Tomlinson was never a done deal. The story was always “I’m taking my talents to AL if they offer,” never “yeahhhh GT woooo yeahhhhhh.” But you’re right about the need for development. The way Joey looks at Charles Perkins from the memories he has from high school I think he’s going to start doing the dog-leg-hump thing, but he’s had yet to show us any of that
Paul Johnson: not giving a crap about what you have to say since 1987.
dog-leg-hump thing? Joey?
Anyway, I think Jason is right. I have been saying the same thing. Tech needs to have several good years, beat some elite teams and win some bowls. It will happen. When it does you will see more and more recruits being interested in Tech. Remember that the guys who want to go to UGA right now are guys who had the hard wiring of their brains fused into red and black circuitry by watching the “dwags” play on TV when they were eight years old. It takes a long time to build an image but the results last well into the future.

I concur. I also agree with your earlier point #1 about winning. If the team wins with more regularity – particularly and specifically, if the team wins out of the conference and bowl games with more regularity – then those 4* and 5* ranked recruits will give GT more consideration.

This post was getting boring
way to stir is up a little. On your points:
1. Gnonkonde wasn’t a problem with “closing the deal” on CPJ. As for the other guys, sometimes you get them and sometimes you don’t. I’m sure we won’t be that much worse off without Crawford and Adams. Tuitt is also a non-issue because he was just screwing around.
2. Agreed.
I think an issue is that we’re finding talent at the lower levels early and offering when they haven’t gotten picked over by the big guys. We’re competing against the MTSU’s and Georgia Southerns so early (that leads to the perception that we aren’t bringing in Div-I talent, too). The Alabama’s and UGA’s of the world can let everyone else do their scouting because they’re going to get the top guys on their boards that everyone knows about without much work. If they lose those guys, then they work down to players that Tech, Vandy, etc. have already been on for a while. Sometimes the allure of playing for a childhood favorite or national title contender is too much.
O.K., so we did get Beau Hankins.
