It's Official (For Realz) Georgia Tech To Open 2012 Football Season At Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech will open the season at Virginia Tech on Labor Day night, according to a person familiar with the ACC’s scheduling.
The schools and the league had been in discussions trying to organize the game, which will have a national ESPN platform at a time slot with little competition.
It will be a nice break from the typical FBS scheduling that we have seen over the past few years.
What do you think of this? I like it. I think Georgia Tech plays its best football at the beginning of the year, regardless of the opponent level.

Well I did make the trip to Durham last fall
From Columbus. Starting at, like, midnight. So I could make that drive, in theory.

Like I said in a private email to some of you, I have bad memories about these types of games
After Georgia Tech won its National Championship they were returning a team that was loaded. They got talked into playing Penn State (who was projected as a national power) in an opening season nationally televised game, got slaughtered, and were never the same team after that, losing several more key games through the course of the season. They did finish with a winning record and a bowl win but they never reached their potential.

YES!
This is what I’m talking about. We do seem to play the most inspired football at the beginning of the season (see Chan Gailey)…we’ve ruined several national title hopes as a result.
I can’t wait to see the look on Turkey Neck’s / Foster’s face when he practices all summer for the option and we come out throwing the ball, working in weird option formations as needed.
If not for Beamer’s pregame ritual involving a four leaf clover enema, we would have beaten them more than once in the past couple of years.
Cue familiar arguments in 3,2,1...
Big defense with time to prepare!!! GT gon’ DIE!!!
Except how awesome is this if we go in there and punch ’em right in the mouth? (Too soon?)

OR
What if we go in there and drop ALL. THE. VAD. on ’em?!!!
They tend to choke early in the season and we tend to have receivers who catch the ball. We could very well KANSASTROY them!
I met her on the campus, sir, cheering the Brave and Bold.
I Wonder If CPJ Really Wanted To Do This or . . .
if he was overruled by the AD and administration? I am sure he was consulted but I wonder if he was ambivalent or if he said, “Hell yes, we’ll take on those gobble-suckers and grind them into gravy!” Just wondering.

I think any coach would prefer to start easy and ratchet it up...
But its one of those risk/reward things. Win or lose you get better TV dollars and more national exposure. If you lose, you get one of your tougher games out of the way and have 11 games to build it back (and hope for VPI to falter). If you win…you are in the Coastal driver’s seat…

Tough Start
To everyone who has said that we start fast, look at the competition. We’ve played a bunch of FCS option fodder. Fortunately, Virginia Tech probably plays its worst football early in the season (regardless of competition), so I see this as being a close game. The big difference won’t be VT’s extra time to practice. It’ll be Georgia Tech’s ability to get the timing, etc. down through training camp and avoid mistakes.
I agree
This is a timing sensitive offense.

True
And do the Hokies really start slowly? I mean, I love GT but we’re no Bama or Boise State. Now, could we compare quite favorably to UCE, JMU, and App State? Of course. My point, however, is that the Hokies weren’t pumped for those particular early season games. They looked like they tried their darndest against BSU and Bama, though, and only failed because those two are superior teams. So, this “VT starts slow” thing has me wondering if they will really start slowly against us? And at home? At night?
I hope we can go in there and throw the ball around and be legitimately better than they are and win!
I met her on the campus, sir, cheering the Brave and Bold.
I would still say "yes"
Compared to how they play late in the season, struggling against the likes of JMU and ECU qualifies as “starting slow.” Now, will they prepare more? Perhaps, but so would Georgia Tech.
VT doesn't start slow
Where is this idea that VT starts slow? They lost to Boise St. last year, to Alabama in 2009 (when Alabama was national champs), ECU when ECU beat the #8 team the next week and won 9 games, LSU in 2007 when LSU was national champs, and USC in 2004 when USC won the national championship game. Yeah, the also lost to James Madison, but that was after they lost to Boise State. Other than that, they tend to cream the opponents in the first couple of games.
I ask it this way, if we lost to that list of teams, would you say we started late or just had good teams early?
It’s like saying we start fast because we beat the Jacksonville States of the world.
This game’s just going to be tough like always. No one gets the advantage because of when the game happens. Go Jackets!
Special Teams will be the key to this game.
Mark my words, 7 months before kickoff, Special Teams will be the key to this game.

Haven't Beamer's special teams fallen off lately?
Not that its a clear strength of ours, either. It would be nice to know that we could get accurate FG kicking from <45 yds. It will also be interesting to see if Rodwell can contribute immediately.
Our biggest deficiency last year was coverage.

We did offer a scholarship to that punter
the one who kicks balls down the field consistently. That’s promising, right?
I met her on the campus, sir, cheering the Brave and Bold.
We were once scheduled to open the season at VPI
but it rained a lot and they cancelled the game.
I think Vick was the quarterback then (the dog-fighting Vick, not the dope-peddling Vick).
That was the game where Lee Corso's rental car got his by lightening...
oddly enough, shortly after he donned the Hokie hat and picked VPI. Coincedence?
"Reach down in there...TURN THAT DAMN THING UP!" - Coach Paul Johnson
Yep, hit by lightning.
He said the dash lights were flashing, the car smelled like burned hair, but it started and drove.
4am, Rental Car agency showed up at his hotel room with keys to a NON SMOKING CADDY. Kid from the rental agency didn’t know who Corso was, demanded to see his rental contract and drivers license. Wouldn’t leave the car keys at the front desk. Bet he knows who Corso is now.
What was the result of that game? Was it vacated? Can we appeal to get it back?

I don't think it was ever replayed...
Unlike the Miami game reschduled due to a hurricane, the results of the game didn’t factor into deciding the ACC Coastal so I think they left it unplayed (someone correct me if I’m wrong).

The game just never happened
That season was a game short, I think.
VPI wasn’t in the conference, so it didn’t count.
Spring practice and T-Day scrimmage are that much more important
Will it be Tevin, Synjyn or Vad? How are our A-backs gonna round out without Embry and Roddy? Who’s gonna replace Stephen Hill? So many unanswered questions….
Atlanta Sports: Allergic to big games
I think we'll be fine...
Tevin’s the starter…he’s earned that. It will be interesting to see if Vad establishes himself as the clear cut #2.
A-backs I’m also OK with. Aside from Orwin Smith, there’s a bunch of quick guys ready to step in like BJ Bostic, Tony Zenon, Deon Hill, etc…
WR is another matter…there’s no clear cut replacement and I heard a rumor that Daniel McKayhan might also follow BJ Machen and leave behind his eligibility for a job offer. Both starters will have to earn it, but I like Darren Waller and Jeff Greene.
I still don’t totally like our B-Back situation. David Sims is OK but he doesn’t have that quick wiggle to break a tackle in tight space (like Jon Dwyer, or even Preston Lyons did). Charles Perkins puts the ball on the ground. Not sure what we have beyond that…
"Reach down in there...TURN THAT DAMN THING UP!" - Coach Paul Johnson
Crazy B-back solution, anyone?
Adam Friggin Gotsis. Just TRY bringing that down!
If not at B-back, then it’d be fun to do some surprise lead-blocking with him out of an unexpected shotgun or pistol. Just spitballin’…

Oops! Accidentally hit flag at first rather than reply.
I could not agree more about being fine at quarterback. People need to give Tevin his due. A-backs are good to go also.
What I really want to talk about is B-Back. I was always a Preston Lyons fan but never felt like he got to play as much as he should have. Now that he is gone I am really wondering about Perkins. He clearly has been a disappointment. Is it possible that he is not suited for B-Back? I thought he was recruited because had break away speed. Maybe, he would do better from the A-back position where he has more time to read the field and get some momentum. He just doesn’t seem to hit the hole very quickly at B-Back. Though we seem to need him at this point as a back-up QB I think Days would make a better B-Back than Perkins.
by Atlanta's original team on Jan 27, 2012 7:11 AM EST up reply actions
I agree on Days being more ideally suited for B-Back...
Problem is…we don’t have a QB bridge between a Senior like Tevin and Freshman like Vad Lee, Dennis Andrews, and Justin Thomas.
One of our recruits at the B-Back is named Marcus Allen…that’s gotta be a sign right?

It was break-away speed
that made Dwyer so dangerous at B-Back. He could break some tackles, but, once he was past one linebacker, he was gone.
We could use speed at B-back.
While Tevin is the starter going in
Vad Lee and Synjyn Days will have every opportunity to unseat him. The position is fine, but I think that’s because of the competition…not the fact that Tevin is the clear winner.
Consider it this way...
We generally only get to see the games. It’s a simple process versus results type of argument.
CPJ sees them all in practice, and gets to review practice film of each of them many times over than they have game film.
