Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Tim Byerly is transferring from MTSU to Georgia Tech. He led Chattahoochee High School to the 2010 State Championship.

"Coach Bohannon said they were pretty slim at QB with depth and that they would love to have me," Byerly said. "I got accepted at Georgetown, and that was pretty high on my list. I felt Georgia Tech was pretty much the same education-wise, was a bigger state for football, and was obviously close to home."

The comment about pretty slim at quarterback is an interesting one. Quarterbacks next year will be Tevin Washington, Synjyn Days, Vad Lee, Justin Thomas (redshirt?), and now Tim Bylerly (who must redshirt).

What?!

You mean actually come to Georgia Tech because the academics are better? Surely you are kidding?!?!

Yep

It’s crazy right? Inside this state (GA) is the only place people are largely ignorant of Tech’s reputation. Leaving this state is the best way to make Tech look really good to yourself. Up in Tennessee they know what a great school Tech is, and given the current state of football at their colleges they definitely see GT football through clearer eyes than anyone in this state does. So I’m certain this kid sees this as a huge life upgrade for himself, and I hope he contributes as soon as he gets on that offensive scout team! Depth at QB is great to have if we want to keep everyone working hard and progressing!

He is transferring to be a preferred walk-on...

That was in the story I read last night, do for the short term it doesn’t tie up a schollie.

Second

I read this as well. No scholarship yet, but as with any walk-on, he can earn one.

Can he play another position post redshirt?

See: Demarius Bilbo.

You'd do it for Randolph Scott!

I guess it never hurts to have more depth

but I just hope we can keep everyone happy with their playing time.

I agree with Jason’s comment above but there is another side of things I wonder about sometimes. Players at the football factories seem more content to ride the bench because they are just so honored to be on the team. At least they act that way. Players coming to Tech seem to think that since it is not a football factory they have a right to be able to play right away at their preferred position. I am over stating the case on something that I think might be a subtle difference between a player wanting to go to Alabama and a player wanting to go to Tech, academics aside.

For two counter examples

see Synjyn Days and Daniel Drummond.

We’ve had two quarterbacks transfer out, but Jaybo followed a coach and did well with the move. Luellen, I think, just wanted to be closer to home. He’s still third on the depth chart.

Depth

Washington, RS JR
Days, RS FR
Lee, FR

At present, I think these three are the only players whose future potentially involves a lot of playing time at QB for GT. There are other players who can, do, or have played QB (e.g. Sims, Dickey) but I think the likelihood of their playing meaningful minutes in a game is quiet low.

Of those three, Washington is the only one with significant playing time. From Washington to Days the experience drop off is something like 20 games played to 20 minutes played (a slight exaggeration, but you see the point). So from that standpoint, there is not a lot of depth at QB: GT has bodies (several of them if you include Dickey, Sims, et al), but not experience. That said, I don’t see how Byerly will rectify that problem since he has to sit out and can’t immediately contribute to the body count, and he certainly won’t have the experience of anyone else. Going into the 2013-2014 season (Byerly has to sit out 2012-2013), Days will be a RS JR, Lee will be a RS SO, plus this year’s QB recruits will be RS FR and Byerly will be a RS SO.

So while I don’t find the comment about lack of depth at QB to be interesting, merely a statement of fact, what I do find interesting is the implication that Byerly can address that depth issue. I would love to know more about Coach Bohannon’s thoughts on QB depth.

I think there's not a lot to read there...

Dennis Andrews enrolled early, Justin Thomas hasn’t signed his LOI yet.

I think it’s a statement based more around the fact that most of our QB depth is unproven…Days included.

We're not going to be able to keep them all at QB

In two years, no way that we can play Washington, Days, Lee, Thomas, Andrews, and whoever else we pick up along with Byerly (assuming he earns playing time). It wouldn’t surprise me if Days and Andrews got moved to other positions. Days would be good at A-Back, Andrews could be good at A-Back or in the secondary. Time will tell what each brings to the team though.

Days seems more like a B-Back...

if he can learn to take hits in that position. As does Byerly, although he may not have the first step needed to transition there.

I agree, in 2 years our QBs will be Vad Lee, Justin Thomas, Dennis Andrews, and future recruits. What’s exciting about Justin Thomas is that he, like Vad Lee, are so athletic that even I they don’t stick at QB they’ll be on the field. Justin Thomas is the kind of electrifying return man we need, and can easily line up at A-Back or WR.

In the option

more quarterbacks are better than fewer. When he starts playing, we’ll have Days, Lee, Thomas, Andrews, and Byerly. Without him, that’s not “slim” but an injury or two and possibly a transfer makes this look very different. We played Daryl Dickey early this season because we didn’t have another QB on scholarship, so we’ve seen that three or more QB’s is probably desirable.

by acedarney on Jan 12, 2012 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Well, there was also the wise decision of not burning Vad Lee’s RS year too. Not sure it matters up 30-40 in the 4th quarter if your backup QB is on schollie or not.

by TBuzz on Jan 12, 2012 3:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You're right

I was just trying to emphasize the use of three quarterbacks this season. If there was an injury to Washington or Days, you wouldn’t want Dickey to be the next man up. With four deep at QB, you allow yourself injuries, transfers, and you can still redshirt your promising young players. If Byerly plays well, which he very well could, we’ll have that security.

by acedarney on Jan 12, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like the decision to give Byerly a schollie won’t have to be made until 2013 either since he has to sit out this year.

Not sure about that

He has to sit out, but I’m not sure that doesn’t mean he can not be given a scholarship immediately. Phrased differently, I think it is possible that a player can transfer and be on scholarship the entire time.

In the specific case of Byerly, he comes to GT as a preferred walk-on, so there is no scholarship at present and there no obligation by GT to give him one in the future. However, I think CPJ, if he so desired, could give Byerly a scholarship right now.

by Dive Keep and Pitch on Jan 12, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct

but Byerly will have to earn his scholarship. It won’t be given to him by virtue of playing a position in which we need bodies.
