new Georgia Tech, or typical blow it tech?

Go Jackets!!!

Star-divide

Okay so the jackets have started off strong..but I know, being a jacket fan as long as I have, that we have that thing  in the back of our heads that says "Techs going to blow it, and it's going to piss me off really badly..." If thats the case, you're a true, and legit tech fan. I do feel confident about the offense and the team..but when will that saturday or thursday come where we just shake our heads and say "Typical tech...screw it..."? Will there be that day?

I really think that the team had that thought though...I've seen the team chemistry on the sideline, in practice, on facebook...name it..it's there. I really dont think that they are think so far ahead like we are, they're just taking it week by week like every normal football player should.

All I can say now, is that we are all proud of the way tech has comeback this year, compared to the embarassment they put us through, and to theirselves.

Is this the year?

Will we blow this chance?

The schedule leads us to believe that...what do you think about all of this??

I think...

…4-0 is only a special record to us because it’s rare. But it’s only rare in that it’s rare that the schedule is set up this way. That said, in order to be undefeated a team DOES have to go 4-0 through its first 4 games. I think we as Tech fans are all just so unused to a perfect September that we don’t know how to handle it. The media wants us to freak out and talk about a 7-0 or even an 8-0 run heading into Clemson. And then, evidently, other factions are preaching the doom and gloom of how we STILL haven’t played anyone and 4-0 can easily turn into 4-4, etc.

Personally, my response is to settle into the finer points of fandom. It’s what I do when we’re sucking (2010 is a good example of such a season.) I focus on the tailgating, the gameday atmosphere, the friends and family I’m with, the Tech traditions….the reasons I’m a lifelong fan. That way I can enjoy 4-0 for all its worth without thinking about whether it’s a “special” year or not.

I honestly believe Tech will go as far as their defense takes them.

Tevin and the offense are clearly one of the best units in the country. They’ll be able to score and score a lot on most everyone. (minus alabama, lsu perhaps) But if the defense stays solid and prevents big plays it could be a big year.

No need for any doom and gloom....

as this is really the first team comprised of 95% CPJ recruited players. The success Coach Johnson had his first 2 seasons while the players were still learning and understanding this unique offense is reflection of everyone making something work even though all of the ingredients were not present.

Now that the pieces and players are in place we are able to see this offense working at a very high level. I cannot remember winning games like we have this season, and albeit that the schedule set itself up nicely, the play has been very good. Our defense came up with back to stops on drives last week to preserve the win, and that has NEVER happened before. I’m very upbeat going into NC State.

Gotta remember something:

what were basing our “typical blow it tech team” are teams coached by Gailey; who coached to not to lose rather than to win. CPJ coachs to win and well keep his players motivated. He also likes to avenge horrible losses

This is my Family Tradition

Very well put...

Chan Gailey coaches the NFL style. Coach Paul Johnson will step on an opponent’s throat, avenge losses, and respond to false accusations such as though thrown his way by Frank Beamer back in 2009 after GT derailed # 4 Va Tech! Such a far cry from the Chan approach.

First of all, let's temper expectations...

Going 9-3 or 8-4 with a team this young, especially considering the buzzsaw of a schedule we’re going to face in late October and November (Clemson, Miami, VT, UGA) in my book would be a successful season.

I’m still not crazy about our defense yet, although this year (unlike in seasons past) they’re actually making the important stops when they need to. But on offense, we’re taking that major step that we needed to in the CPJ era…which was be able to pass at will. We’re downright scary on offense…

May have to re-evaluate

I am scared out of my wits for Maryland next week after this week 5 wonderland.

No reason to be scared of MD

They can barely make it out of conference play.

Also, it is really hard to take this piece seriously with so many writing errors. This is Tech you’re writing about, not UGAg.

by littlepecan on Oct 3, 2011 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

I can't take a comment seriously that includes "UGAg",

although I’d probably think it was funny if I was twelve.

by CraigT on Oct 3, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Why the support for the Un-iversity?

Y’know, U(sic)GA? Georgie? UG(ly)? The Cesspool?

Now, I personally don’t condone focusing on them very much in anything, but when Clarke County Correctional must be mentioned, I (as a Tech grad) will never refer to them in any normal or respectful manner. To be clear, this is not to show that I give any measure of a rat’s hind parts about them or what they do, but if they’re being mentioned at all they’re getting a token of my disapproval in some small way. I think most Tech grads just do it as a typing reflex without even thinking about it. It’s all meant in good fun anyway.

by GT_Jason on Oct 4, 2011 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

It isn't support for U(sic)GA

It’s contempt for the childish “UGAg”. “U(sic)GA” is funny and creative. “Clarke County Country Club” is funny. “UGAg” is just stupid.

I don’t think most Tech grads write “UGAg”. If you’ve got evidence to support your assertion, I’d like to see it. Semi-literate AJC commenters write “UGAg”. Those aren’t the same group.

Insults are fine. I support them fully. Stupid, childish insults that lack even a touch of wit or creativity only succeed in making Tech fans look stupid.

by CraigT on Oct 4, 2011 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don't see much of a difference.

You cheer and jeer how you want, and others will cheer and jeer how they want. Is my personal style to use UGAg instead of UGly or a ton of other stuff? Sure, but I really don’t think someone else saying UGAg somehow lowers Tech fans to the level of childish. When you think about it, isn’t the entire tradition of “hating” another team rather than just liking yours childish anyway? After all, every university is still made up of people…

Name-calling is, in general,

a poor substitute for wit. There’s no thought to it, there’s no creativity to it, and, worst of all, there’s no sting to it. If it doesn’t upset the dawg (sic) fans (those capable of reading it, anyway), then what’s the point?

I’m still waiting for your evidence that “most Tech grads .. do it”. I can’t think of anyone I know from my days at the Institute who would. My friends were smart people. We weren’t above doing silly things, but we did them creatively.

I’ll give you an example: in 1978 a group of us took up a collection and hired an airplane to carry the banner “TO HELL WITH GEORGIA” around Sanford Stadium during the game. The reaction of the crowd was incredible. You could see groups all over the stadium look up and point. We only paid for one pass, but the pilot enjoyed the reaction so much he gave us two more for free.

That became a tradition, but we did it first. It wasn’t my idea, but it was the idea of a friend of mine, and I participated. (The grass seed incident wasn’t my idea, either, but I participated in that, too. There were many more, but I’m not going to write about them, even though the statute of limitations has expired.)

Now compare that to writing “UGAg” or “UGAy” or “UGly”. Which was funny and truly insulting and which was just stupid?

by CraigT on Oct 5, 2011 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

P.S.

We also came up with “Piss on ’em!” response, but, to be fair, we were in school when Georgia fans started saying “How ’Bout Them Dawgs?”.

But you stick with your “UGAg”.

by CraigT on Oct 5, 2011 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok look...

I didn’t write it, first off. I genuinely thought you were trying to be one of those “let’s root for both in-state teams” people.

But look, I’ll just go ahead and take back what I said about how Tech people talk on blogs. I can’t support that and wouldn’t dare to try. My whole point was just a “lighten up.” Modern Tech students hate the Athenians just as much as your generation does, but I totally agree that we don’t put work into it anymore. But consider the media and police being involved way more in student life now than then. I’ll always listen to my elder alumni talk about which statues or chapel bell they stole and how, but those stories always end with “It’s too bad we’d never be able to do that today.” We’re also raised on blogs. I’m sure the guy that wrote UGAg didn’t mean for that to be his big prank of the year. He was just referring to them by what was to him their enemy nameplate. Simple internet slang. I would try to tell you that even the school newspaper has used slurs like that, but I’m afraid I’m just not going to put forth the effort to prove it.

I ask yet again. Aren’t you sort of mad about something you can never control? The guy who wrote that, by the way, hasn’t once responded to this thread of ours. I suppose our critique of his work is all for naught in terms of affecting change in the fanbase.

By the way

Fun anecdote to go with yours:

A former GT football player (played in the late ’70’s) walks into a gas station outside the city. Upon seeing the former player’s worn GT hat, a man in a similarly worn red hate with a G on it perks up and says “Go dawgs.” To which the former player in the GT hat smirks and says “Go where?” The man with the G hat sits silently working on that one as the former player pays and drives off.

This happened.

Who said I was mad about it?

I simply said that I don’t take comments seriously that include name-calling, especially when that comment is attacking someone for writing errors.

I do not respect the opinions of people who resort to cheap name calling. That’s not anger. That’s a statement of fact.
