How Do You Rank the Teams This Week in College Football?

I can't resist giving my two cents worth about how college football teams ought to be ranked at this point in the season.  This year more than any time in recent memory the top teams seem to have staggering athletic prowess.  One is stuck by the combination of shear size, agility and blinding speed.  Personally, I think once you get past the top five or six teams the falloff in talent is so great that the rest of the teams could probably be sorted in any number of ways and it would not matter.  Those teams could all beat each other on a given Saturday and the results could change a dozen times.

Not so for the top teams.  If any of them lose it would probably be only once and  to one team and one team only.  After the jump you could see how I am feeling about the state of football in our land.

Star-divide

1. LSU

2.  Alabama

3.  Oklahoma

4.  Oklahoma State

I know, I know, it is tacky to comment on one's own article but . . .

I have to say when I look at other polls I still see so many glaring errors. Some writers (one bulldog beat writer in particular) seem to be keeping Boise State high because they want the bulldogs to look better for having lost to a top 3 team. I, on the other hand, do not see them keeping up with the size and speed of some of the other teams in the country.

I also can not believe that some writers continue to see South Carolina as a top ten team. They were lucky against Navy (if not for Navy blowing a wide open touchdown pass, who knows?) and their win over Vanderbilt was no inspiring. Beating Georgia at Georgia would mean more if Georgia had proven itself against good teams this year.

My rationale for Oregon being as high as they are is that if LSU is as good as I think they are then Oregon’s showing against them becomes a little more impressive. LSU was able to force Oregon out of its rhythm which was the difference in the game. Oregon still had a shot for much of the game however before LSU put it away.

The hype about Virginia Tech seems like the hype were getting about Florida State. In either case I am not saying they are bad I am just saying let them prove something first. Georgia Tech has proven as much or more than they have and still would not put Georgia Tech that high yet.

South Florida’s win at Notre Dame is looking even more impressive with hind sight, meaning that for now they deserve a place in the top 15.

Re: Boise St

For reference, I have then at 5th.

The thing with Boise St is that for the last half decade, they have pretty much gone on the road and beat one solid team after another and then gone on to obliterate their conference like we all expect a power team should do to inferior competition. They’ve slowly worked their way up the polls each and every year, gradually gaining the required respect to keep them high in the polls the following year. Sure, maybe uga isn’t that great, but even then, Boise St still dominated them through four quarters just like they should against a “not-so-great” team. Should we rank teams based on prior seasons’ performances? Probably not, but I think we all know that’s how the game works. Boise St shows up for big games every time so I’m willing to forgive them for a lackluster start against an inferior opponent and until they start losing I think they deserve the opportunity to play in the big game.

Frankly, until there is a playoff put in place we’ll never really know what to do with a team like Boise St.

Also, I have Florida as the number seven team in the country right now and I have no idea why. I can’t seem to justify it, nor can I find a good enough reason to not have them there. I guess I can wait to see what happens against Bama and LSU before moving them. I’m really at a loss right now. I could swap them with Baylor as they are ripping through their opponents right now. What to do, what to do…..

You're comments about Boise State make sense but . . .

for me, unlike in the recent past, I just have this feeling watching football this year that certain teams are considerably more loaded. Boise State is well coached, tends not to make mistakes, and has enough skill people to be explosive. However, when I compare them with an Alabama or an LSU, to name two, I see teams that have everything going for them that Boise has plus their players at almost every position are either faster, bigger or more athletic. Put another way, Alabama is also well coached, tends not to make mistakes and has skill people. The difference is that Alabama has a talent pool that strikes me as twice as deep.

Anyway, I don’t normally gush like this over SEC teams. This year I think they live up to the hype.

Which brings us to teams like South Carolina and Florida. I have not been as impressed with either one of them but that could change. Florida has athletes but they don’t seem to have the total package. Of course if they beat Alabama I will have to instantly reassess that. South Carolina feels a lot like Virginia Tech to me right now, a team that keeps winning but hasn’t shown anything to prove that it could stay on the filed with an Oklahoma or a Nebraska.

Clemson is an interesting case. They seem really raw and undisciplined. Imagine them being coached by Saban and you could see them going far with the talent they have.

I think Saban probably has more talent in Alabama...

Just saying, but nearly their entire defense could get drafted this year if they came out haha.

That's why I have Alabama so high

I agree. I am stunned when I look at the talent and depth at both Alabama and LSU. And Oklahoma ain’t bad either. This year it seems like there are four or five great teams (at most) and everyone else is an also-ran. At the end of the year there will be teams in the bottom half of the top ten that are there by luck of scheduling and the quirks of the game, teams that could still be beaten by a team ranking much lower in the polls. Like I said, this year it looks like everyone else is an also-ran.

an also-ran can occur in sports, politics or anything involving competition. It means that there are teams, horses, candidates or competitors that have a real shot at winning (contenders) and then there are all the others who make up the field (also-rans) who have no chance of winning anything significant.
