Scouting NC State v. Cincinnati

I am "scouting" NC State tonight with a glass of Woodford Reserve and thinking the Wolfpack will need all the extra days they can get.  It's 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter and the Bearcats are in total control of the game.  Tailgating next weekend at Carter-Finley should be a festive occasion.

24-7 late in the half.

NCSU broke a screen pass for 80+ yards and a TD thanks to a missed tackle. Cuncy drove back down field and kicked FG. State has no defense and Glennon is hitting short passes. Nothing down field. State also has 3 turnovers at the half. Yardage about even at about 200 yards. 24-7 at halftime.

3rd qtr 27-7

Just saw a bad missed call. State defender had his back to the QB and ran over the receiver b4 the ball arrived. NO CALL!!! Bearcats kicked a FG. NC State has -21 yards rushing.

34-7

Cincy just scored again. Runs work against State, but they have no pass defense. Pi Kappa Alpha can play better. Is Cincinnati this good?

Cincinatti is not good, NCST is horribly bad

Cincinnati has some weapons as they proved in the first quarter against Tennessee but they also have some glaring weaknesses as they proved in the second, third and fourth quarters against Tennessee. They are an incomplete team at best. Ironically, they were beaten by another incomplete team in their loss to Tennessee which then showed how incomplete they were when beaten to a pulp by Florida.

Imagination and words fail me when contemplating how far NCST has fallen since last year.

Is it really all that hard though?

Two words: Russel…Wilson

I agree.

TOB wanted Wilson at spring practice and his baseball contract would not allow it. I think Glennon will be OK eventually, but he’ll never be Russell Wilson. That aside, Wilson did not play many downs on defense.

Exactly

Auburn lost Cam Newton but they still beat Utah State and Mississippi State, and they did not lose to Clemson by 30 points, though that would not be as bad as losing to Cincinnati by 30 points.

Oh no no

Auburn didn’t beat Utah St at all. Utah St celebrated the win before the final whistle and forgot to block during the obvious onside kick. Sorry, but I refuse to give Auburn any credit whatsoever for that win, Cam Newton-less or not.

Relative to the topic though, I don’t think NCST has anywhere close to the pure talent that Auburn has, so it’s not the same.

Allow me to clarify what I think our difference of opinion is

Russell Wilson was a huge loss to NCST. But even so it is hard to imagine a team falling as far as NCST has. Perhaps it has to do with team morale when you know your offense is no longer going to score many points. But whatever it is, last year’s NCST defense did a respectable job most of the time. Last year they were the team that I feared most on Tech’s schedule. This year I rank them right up there with Middle Tennessee.

That is quite a fall off!

I see

You are holding them at a much higher regard than I. NCSt didn’t concern me last year, Russel Wilson did and he’s the one that burned us in the second half, not NCSt’s defense. Either way, that does clarify things.

I hear ya

But that score would have been much closer with him than it ended up without him. Being able to sustain more than one drive would surely have helped the defense some. By much who knows, but…well…you know, all that stuff about staying fresh through four quarters, blah blah blah. Yeah, I’m pretty much reaching to defend a fellow ACC team at this point.

I understand.

I gave up defending NCSU about halftime. They were terrible.

41-14.

The Bearcat drive did not take long. All runs until the TD pass on 3rd down.

44-14

The 4th qtr was benign while Cincy played reserves. If this is it for O’Brien, don’t be surprised. The Pack is bad.

Tenuta

Is NCSt Defensive Coordinator Tenuta-Tech’s old D coordinator? If it is, then can anyone who watched the game tell me if they blitzed like crazy. That was his trademark. If they stopped you it was at the line of scrimmage, but if you got past, it was at least a 1st down.
