Butch Davis has been fired at UNC (Updated)
Inside Carolina is reporting today that Butch Davis has been terminated has coach of the Tarheels football team. How can this whole situation at UNC get stranger? My view of what happened comes from my residency in North Carolina and listener to the sports scene here. I think Carolina is firing one of the best coaches in the conference. I guess the school has learned more about the scandal from the NCAA than has previously been reported.
Update 7/28/2011 11:41 - The AD is also leaving, so the Chancellor and BOT are cleaning house in Chapel Hill. I wonder if the death penalty is coming from the NCAA?

When this broke 12 months ago there was A LOT of talk that this hurt the school's academic reputatation
Seems like this is still the crux.

From what I hear
the school’s academic reputation is hanging in the balance of this McAdoo trial. There’s a lot of talk about less-than-equal treatment of the athletes at UNC, letting them slide by even when the work isn’t up to snuff.
Yes, that is the fear.
My UNC friends in eastern NC are very worried that the NCAA will levy stiff penalties on the football program. But the McAdoo stuff has scared the alumni in a very different way. They truly love the university and feel betrayed by this scandal. Maybe betrayed is too strong a word, but you know what I mean.
Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
What a shock . . .
I wonder if the NCAA would ever come down hard enough on Alabama, LSU or Auburn to cause them to lose a football coach? Just wondering . . .

Given what has happened at Ohio State I don’t think there is a question that they could come down hard enough to make the school consider whether it was better to fire or not. The big difference is whether the school would stand by the coach or not. At OSU they decided it was better to let Tressle take the fall, but I could maybe see an SEC program thumb its nose at the NCAA and attempt to keep a coach.

How different if CBB?
What if it had been Roy (or Dean) an the hoops team instead of CFB?
