Georgia Tech Uniforms

This is just a short post about the change in the color of the uniforms that Georgia Tech has been using. It seems that instead of using gold anymore, they are using a more yellow color. I don't know about everybody else, but I'm a fan of the "old gold" uniforms. I think that they should return back to using gold over yellow though, because it is the Yellow Jacket's school colors, and it looks better too.

Don't give up, don't ever give up ~ Jim Valvano

I'll play along

When we rid ourselves of Gailey, we also got a new look. Swoopy shoulder stripes, white jerseys at home again, etc. We also, as you all remember, changed the uniform color from a pale gold to a bright mustard-like yellow gold. Speaking in technical, RGB# terms, it is much closer to the official “Old Gold” school color, but on Uni’s looked too bright. 2009 brought the same uniform style with the brightness turned down a notch on the yellow-ness. In 2010 we got a new uniform style again, but with the 2009 gold color.

What do I think? I’m torn. I like my Jackets in a traditional uniform, but I really don’t care enough to make a stink if we try new things. As for the color – we Jackets have never been great at enforcing an exact shade of gold for fans or the players (football gold differs from baseball gold, etc.). So changing it year to year is fine by me. I want wins. I do appreciate us not being Russel’s version of Oregon, however. I was one of the few who liked the 2008 yellow but thought the uniform style should have stayed the same as days of old.

I just thought the shiny gold color in the Gailey uniforms was pretty cool looking.

But I like the new uniform designs though, I just have noticed the change in the shades of the gold that we have used.

by RamblinWreck7 on Jun 13, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I think your view is firmly in the majority

I think most Jackets fans liked the shiny fabric on the Gailey-era uniforms. My opinion is that it looked a little too Vandy/Wake-ish. And in our history we’d never really worn that pale a shade of gold before then.

My personal favorite uniforms of all time are the Bud Carson-era white helmets (gold logo, big navy-gold-navy stripe) over mustard-yellow-gold jerseys with huge navy numbers (stark white lining) over white britches with big navy-gold-navy striping. These came out on Throwback Thursday against UVA in 2006 and are just plain good. My least favorites ever were the navy-with-gold-swoops jerseys worn against LSU in the CFA bowl a couple years ago. Can you believe they almost gave us navy helmets for that game? I’m glad they saw that as a bridge too far.

I’ve been praying Russell Athletic will grace us with some more historic-looking uniforms. I’d bring back oversized numbers, no piping, less swoopy-shapes and more things like numbers on the shoulders, sleeve stripes, GT’s instead of Buzz logos. If I worked for Russell I’d try a “Pro-Combat”-style game against a big opponent where the helmet was matte white with a metallic gold logo over white jerseys with “Tech” in gold letters and gold jersey numbers (like the throwback basketball jerseys against UNC) over simple white pants with one large gold stripe. Simple and clean. In any case, I’m still watching the Jackets play!

by GT_Jason on Jun 13, 2011 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Can't argue this at all

The old school throwback’s are my ultimate favorite. I’m not overly opposed to any of the newer designs, but I don’t like any of the bright yellow colors. Stick with white and “Old Gold” or just plain gold. If you are going to go anything mustard, then leave out that mass production French’s color and go with something more whole grain mustard.

So...

…could we meet in the middle and agree on that pastel-colored mustard sauce that you dip the little crunchy things in at the Chinese buffet? #socultured

by GT_Jason on Jun 14, 2011 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

...

How about just plain old normal gold.

We've talked about this before so I will repeat myself again (redundancy intended)

I too like the gold uniform of the Bud Carson era.

My choice would be to use that entire uniform package as one option, use the white jersey gold pants option of the Pepper Rogers era and the blue jersey combination of the Bobby Ross era. In my opinion those are the 3 best uniform combinations of all time.

"Pro Combat"

I dig the idea of the matte white hats, etc. you described. Also agree with everybody talking ditching Russell and going with Under Armor/Nike etc. Russell is an embarassment.

Last year Jacob and I were talking unis, and he’s like “Russell’s version of ‘Pro Combat’ will be some Boy Scout gear for us. We’ll sport a handkerchief.”

by Ramblin Jeff on Jun 29, 2011 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I think 1960's unis look best...

with a 1960’s offense! Ha! Get it? I made fun of the option and that’s funny!

/sarcasm off

I think classic uniforms always look better.* I fully agree with GT_Jason’s proposals above.

*does not apply to Oregon. Nothing looks good on Oregon.

When you live in Eugene, Oregon...

…you have to dress snazzy and have Donald Duck as your mascot so as not to end your own life. “Self-medicating” I think they call it.

by GT_Jason on Jun 15, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

They do call it that....

….but I don’t think that’s what they mean by it.

by LilBroey700 on Jun 15, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I like to think it goes thusly...

…stand in front of lockerroom mirror, see the bladed duck wings and neon colors on carbon-fiber background, feel like you look good, flood of endorphines, not going to kill yourself for living in Oregon today.

by GT_Jason on Jun 15, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What you can't deny, though, is that they're interesting....

Who else in the country gets press based on their uniforms alone? Unless the Seahawks are wearing green, the Chargers are wearing the powder blues, or Texas wears something that doesn’t involve white and burnt orange, you’d never hear about it.

by LilBroey700 on Jun 15, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean...

Lots of uniforms are interesting. Even if they suck. Consider Wyoming. Brown and Yellow…quite interesting.

by GT_Jason on Jun 15, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Worth noting....

is that we seem to be the only BCS school sponsored by Russell. Anyone know what the deal with that is? I would love to see what Nike could do with us for a Pro-Combat uni, they’ve been incredibly creative with most of them so far and I absolutely love them, if only because they’re unique.

Also, I feel like our apparel looks like shit compared to other schools. I never want to buy any of it. Anyone else feel the same way? I don’t know why it is but I just feel like it never looks like something I want to spend ludicrous, “there’s a college logo on this so the price is 3x normal” money.

Finally, yes, actual old gold please. Like, the stuff on the front of the old school basketball unis we wore against UNC.

by LilBroey700 on Jun 15, 2011 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Russell Athletic

As I recall, we get 4 million bucks (one time or annually I don’t know) for being their “performance research institute” (same kind of operation Nike has at Oregon, UConn, and others.) I guess it was profitable for our Athletic Dept and so that’s what we did. They do get us new football uni’s every year, though. I agree that they should try a Pro-Combat-style uniform for a big game, but I’m not sure they have an up-market brand segment yet.

Ok, so also I wouldn’t be upset if one day Radakovich said “that’s it, we’re a Nike/Adidas/Under Armour team now.” I’d assume Nike’s the most expensive. Might even be a recruiting boost?

by GT_Jason on Jun 15, 2011 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You have no idea how happy I would be if they cleared all of the Russell Athletic out of Barnes and Noble and replaced it with reasonably priced Nike/Under Armour stuff.

Also, definitely a recruiting boost, I’d imagine. A branding boost if nothing else.

by LilBroey700 on Jun 16, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

"reasonably priced Nike/Under Armour stuff"

Now THAT’s the kind of imagination befitting a Tech man who’s truly hoping to change the world!

by GT_Jason on Jun 16, 2011 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

A man can dream, can't he?

Nike Swoosh/Under Armour logo + GT = $all of the money

by LilBroey700 on Jun 21, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I would take that deal if it paid more than Russel does.

But Nike or Under Armor might not outbid Russel because they have a bunch of other teams.

As gentlemen we will all overlook your admission of ignorance in the realm of men’s fashion as it relates to the time-honored contest of the gridiron. A brief lesson from one Jacket to another, if I may: Pro Combat, good sirrah, is the top tier niche brand of performance sporting apparel masterfully sewn by the fine young oriental house ladies diligently working in the perfectly fair and safe jungle communes owned by Nike, Inc. Several of the most popular intercollegiate footballers teams don them from time to time – usually on occasions of particular import. For instance, the proud student athletes of Boise State University wore special uniforms designed by Nike Pro Combat to face the studious young men of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at the outset of last season – a team also outfitted in blakc and orange Nike Pro Combat uniforms. UF, tOSU, Miami (FL), UWV, and many other teams have worn these multicolored threaded wonderments onto the field of play for two seasons now. My lesson is concluded and I bid you a hearty “Go Jackets” good sir!

Black

Need more Black.

Shiny gold britches, Black Jerseys. Look at 1990.

I too enjoyed the Throwback helmets, but my guess deep down is that as long as you don’t look like a French Fry, CPJ doesn’t give a Rat’s Ass about Unis.

by DressHerInWhiteAndGold on Jun 25, 2011 6:53 AM EDT reply actions

Disagree.

No black. White is our black. Old Gold is our red. Navy is….also there. This is the way of things on Grant Field.

by GT_Jason on Jun 27, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I like the idea, but it’ll probably never happen; my understanding is some of the big money boosters are EXTREMELY anti-black (they don’t even like the navy tops, but can take it once/year). But who knows if that hearsay is accurate.

When I was in school, the baseball team had jerseys with black instead of navy (I think), and I know the club hockey team did, and they all looked solid. Was it a little Wake/Vandy-ish? Maybe, but it looked good.

Bottom line to me is, get stuff that the kids like. Have Russell come in, and let the seniors/captains get some input. They know what looks fresh, but have been at GT long enough to understand what’s “sacred.”

by Ramblin Jeff on Jun 29, 2011 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

my vote would be to go back to the throwback thursday

unis and make those our everyday uniforms! they just look so splendid with CJ sprinting into the endzone for a TD!

Also, isn’t russel our provider cause the founder was a Tech grad?? I have heard that on occasion but have never seen any proof of that. But i say grad or no grad, dump russel and pick up nike or under armour!

This is my Family Tradition
