Off To Kentucky For Horses, Bourbon, and Women In Big Hats
Later this afternoon, I'll be heading to my first ever Kentucky Derby. Every year I watch the Derby, with no knowledge whatsoever on horses I might add, because every year my family places some sort of bet on the race. My grandpa always kicks it off with a phone call and his pick. And he's picked more winners than anybody else.So this year I'll be placing a bet in his name at the track.
No grandstand for me, we're going total infield, where the real fun is. In case you are unaware of what the infield brings, check out Spencer Hall's piece on the Derby from last year.
Do you have a Kentucky Derby tradition? Who's your favorite? Don't know of any of the horses like everyone else? SBNation's got you covered with a list of all the horses you need to know about for Saturday.
See yall on Monday.

Good lord I’d give me left arm to be up there for that event. The summer dress season is amazing

Watching it with the boys
I’’ve never really been all that interested in the events until recently. A couple of years ago I put some money into a work pool and decided I would get up and watch all the races all day long and see if the boys liked it. Well, my middle son ended up picking the first ten race winners based soley on the colors he liked. He ended the day picking well over 50% of the races and we’ve watched each year for fun to see how well he does.
Not sure how many races I will catch this year though since the wife wants to go shooping for house upgrades – flooring, paint, etc.

My Derby Tradition
is to avoid the area around Churchill Downs like the plague. I accidentally got sucked into the traffic a couple of years ago and had to actually drive by the track to escape. The police wouldn’t let me turn away.
The festival has been going on for a month, tempered by a lot of rain and flooding.
Today was the Oaks, the race locals seem to prefer, and it was reasonable warm and sunny. That’s not the forecast for the Derby.
Have fun in the mud!
