What's a Jacket Fan to do?

I need some help.  Granted, this decision will ultimately be decided by me and my family, but I am interested in y'all's opinions.

Optimistically, we bought ACCCG tickets, parking spaces and reserved a hotel in Charlotte.  I'm super excited to go, even though the Jackets won't be there.  With a sold out crowd and quite an amiable feeling towards Clemson, in general, going to this game should be a great time.

But.

We could sell these tix for a profit and probably easily purchase tickets to whatever bowl game we get with that money.

So, what do we do?  Support our team in their bowl game or take the kids to a football experience they may not get to have again for a while?  (This is the biggest part of our Xmas gift to them.)

What say you, Jacket Nation?

Given the choice

between tickets to the championship game and a chance to see the Ramblin’ Wreck actually win a bowl game, I’d take my Yella Jackets every time. Why? ‘cause I’m me.

White and Gold is in this blood, baby.

And by championship game

that can be read “conference” or “national”. Both apply. If that makes me crazy, then gosh darn it, I’m just crazy.

It doesn't make you crazy.

I don’t really have any interest in the BCS. It’s not a real championship anyway. The ACCCG is much more important to me.

I'd take the Bowl tickets

As exciting as the conference championship game may be, I’d much rather see my team win a bowl game!

I can see the dilemma here

On the one hand, Charlotte is normally a fun city, but it will be overrun by drunken fans of two of our biggest rivals who will sneer or laugh or yell (or spell the name of their school in a chant) whenever they see any GT gear. But it will be an electric atmosphere at the game and in Charlotte’s super-cool outdoor urban party spot called “The Epicenter.”

On the other hand, Tech is playing in God knows what city (El Paso, probably) against God knows which team (someone from the Pac 12 most likely…maybe Utah or ASU?) But it is Georgia Tech in a warm climate playing a winnable game. This is good stuff.

Hmmm…

The problem here

is the substantial travel cost associate with somewhere that far. Other than that, I’m definitely with you.

As you said, ultimately you and your family have to make the decision

But here would be my criteria:

1. Do my family members care about the Yellow Jackets as much as I do?
2. Do I have relatives in Charlotte who are expecting me?
3. Would I rather see Tech win a bowl or VPI lose a championship?
4. Wouldn’t I hate myself forever if I saw VPI win a championship?

...

1. Yes. My fiance and I are die hard. We’re getting the kids there.
2. No.
3. I’d rather see Tech win any game than see any other team period.
4. Probably not.

I’d rather see Tech anytime, anywhere. That’s why I drove straight through to Shreveport with my 3 year old and my mom, deathly ill with the worst case of bronchitis I’ve ever had, slept in the parking lot of the hotel until they let us check in, slept for a couple hours in a bed and then went to tailgate.

Let it never be said I’m not die hard.

And then turned around and drove home the next morning, still very ill, but got the chance to run into the band on the Mississippi river, which was very cool.

However, if we wind up somewhere we can’t easily drive to, it won’t matter. We simply can’t afford airfare for 6 people.

Other information, we have four children, 3 under the age of 12, so any super long road trips are out.

I’m sad. I really thought Tech was gonna pull this one out. :(

I think my criteria would be as follows:

1) Would I see one of “my teams” play?
2) Do I mix well with the “non-my-team” fans we will be around (they’re “my kind of fans”)?
3) Am I excited to visit the destination city (would I do other things than just the game)?
4) Do I have family I can see?
5) Is this the cheapest option?

Assuming Tech would play in the Sun Bowl (against, say, Utah) and the ACCCG in Charlotte is between VPI and Clemson. I would answer those questions for myself thusly:

Charlotte: 1-No 2-No 3-Yes 4-No 5 – No [Score = 1 of 5 = 20%]
El Paso: 1-Yes 2- ? 3-No 4-Yes 6 – Yes [Score = 3.5 of 4 = 70%]

So, for me personally, even though El Paso is not as exciting as Charlotte, going to the Sun Bowl against a team we haven’t played in my time while saving a bit of money grades out better for my potential enjoyment than does going to the ACC Championship Game to hang out with a city overtaken by rival fans of a significantly different culture than mine.

If you do go to Charlotte, bring a ton of generic orange…..or RealTree camo.

Whoops...

That should say 3.5 of 5 (not out of 4) for 70%

Now, I was assuming you could stay in El Paso more cheaply than Charlotte to make the travel costs a push, but I might be wrong about which is more money. If we made that reversed, my personal score would be 2 of 5 for 40% on Charlotte and 2.5 of 5 for 50% on El Paso. It seems if GT plays anywhere closer to home, though, it would push me over to that option in a more definite way.

Right now

Ticket prices aren’t high enough for me to sell them.

I think, in the end, we should see what the kids want to do. Ultimately, this one is about them.

For those of you with no kids…don’t have any. Or, feel free to take some of mine.

On a happier note, I'd like to know where people are tailgating for Georgie

or let people know where we are. I’m a really good cook and I’m always happy to share, I love to hand out tailgate fare and would be honored for any of y’all to stop by and grab a Maker’s and a plate.

My fiance brought back hotdogs from Yankee land. AKA Buffalo

I checked gas prices and airfare

El Paso is going to be a no go. The price of gas comparatively is $400 for El Paso and $100 for Charlotte.

Airfare would be $1000 for everyone.

Right now we are doing Charlotte for about $600 total (not counting food.)

Yup

You guys will enjoy Charlotte. It’s a city with the kind of “downtown” that is extremely walkable, and it’s outdoor mall called “The Epicenter” is a fun place to hang out, see a movie, get food, etc. Good mix of cultural food. I liked it when my major did an academic conference there a few years ago. We never took a cab or anything…just walked everywhere. It was ideal for that. I’m sure a game will be plenty of fun. VPI and Clemson are two of the most ravenous and electric fanbases in the ACC…if a wee bit redneck compared to the average GT fan. Just be sure to watch GT on TV somewhere and be loud and proud!

Well, obviously...

that’s not even up for debate. Part of the reason we’re so strapped is because I’m a doofus and bought us a new t.v. for Xmas.
