Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Georgia Tech won’t host Georgia until Nov. 26. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t already thinking about the game. Tell us your favorite play in the rivalry, and the AJC will try to track down the players involved and tell you what they remember about that game and what they are doing now. Please send your favorite (just one, please) and why to Doug Roberson at droberson@ajc.com.

I'd rather discuss them here

In 1984, in Athens, I had gone down to the concession stand under the west stands.

Tech had the ball and was moving east, so I stopped to watch the game, from ground level, so I didn’t miss anything. There was a big opening in the stands I could watch through.

Just then I saw a hole big enough to drive a hole through, and Dewberry ran a quarterback draw through it for a touchdown.

It was just luck that I happened to be there at the right time to see the play from that angle. It would have been better and much closer if Tech had been going the other direction, but I’ll take it.

My last home game as a student was in 1999...

I was in the North endzone right behind the band. First drive in OT uga is driving towards our goalline with power and force. Jasper Sanks was killing us all game, and continued to do so in extras. With the ball at the 2 and under 30 seconds left, Sanks dives for the endzone and gets knocked down at the 1. I look up in horror after hearing the whistle blow thinking “Damnit, their gonna win this game”. Of course, Vince Dooley called the SEC soon afterwards (and for some reason he gets whatever he wants – except his AD job back…Thanks Michael Adams!). Don’t worry SEC refs…it was worth the suspension ;-)

Of course, we all know how that game ended in OT right? Blocked FG on 3rd down, George Godsey has the presence of mind to fall on it. 2nd try on 4th down sails through and the rest is history…

I was in Cleveland Ohio for thanksgiving in 2008

You all know the story. I watched it in my cousins’ basement. The family didn’t know what was going on with all the hooping and hollering. When the clock hit 00:00 I literally had tears in my eyes. Probably b/c I missed the game but who knows really

To build off of that...

watching Roddy on the outside taking to the house and Dwyer taking the first offensive play of the 2nd half to the endzone…. our yankee relatives had no idea.

MY favorite memory comes from oh idk late 90s…. We were in our basement in Ohio listening to the good ole radio. Next thing that happened was something good for Tech ( I still do not know to this day what exactly happened) and that won it for them right there…. I started jumping around and going crazy cause my family was too…. All I knew was if it was good for Tech, then by God it was good for me!

I was in Athens for that one

I was a senior in high school, and my (at the time) girlfriend’s family had season tickets with an extra seat. At halftime it was 28-12, and I was all “Well, here we go again…”. Halfway through the 3rd Quarter we were up a touchdown, setting up the most awkward, smug-look-on-my-face ride home of my life. So excited to have been there.

I guess that's not really a play

But I did love Roddy’s run and the Diesel’s opening to the second half as well.

Watching that game on TV.

Coming back from halftime, the announcers have a graphic showing how our skill positions are sucking and one asks “Where’s the sting?”. We score a touchdown on the first play, they fumble the kickoff and we score again right after that. The other announcer: “Looks like they found their sting.”

Go Jackets, go America.

I am not sure the game but...

there is a video on youtube of pictures (looks like early 2000s with Godsey) with Larry Munson voice over and he says “Georgia Tech is just marching this down the field like we were Wake Forest or Maryland or somebody”
