I'm Really Starting to Wonder....
As to how much we actually lost when Jon Dwyer went to the NFL. Word on the street is he's been REALLY lazy up in Pittsburgh, and calling him a disappointment might be putting it lightly. Now, I know he ran for nearly 1,400 yards two years in a row, and I know he was ACC POTY in 2008, but honestly, with Anthony Allen coming in with all he has to offer, I don't think that loss will kill us. Allen's been working out the entire offseason to be in the best shape he can be in, and he's made it his goal to be the single best back in the country. He's a downhill runner (where Dwyer would try to dodge people, Allen tries to snap your neck before knocking the guy behind you out), he's faster than he was last year (which was pretty dang fast, seeing as he averaged over 9 a carry while playing a more speed-dependent position), he's got some ridiculous work ethic, and he brings attention to our program moreso than Dwyer did (right, Heather Dinich?). Everyone's preview of GT football this year says that we won't be as good without Burnett, Bay-Bay, Dwyer, and Morgan, but I really think that with Allen at B-Back, experienced guys like Roddy and Embry at A-Back, and a man who will win at all costs under center, we have a lot of potential to be even more dangerous than before. What's better is that our schedule allows us a lot of cushion to get our offense in gear and in rhythm before we go into our hellacious 5-game stretch at the end. What say you, FTRS? Will it be a big deal that we lost Dwyer with Allen stepping in to replace him?

I heard from a Steeler's fan
that JD’s lack of production is 2nd only to the problems with Rotten-berger.
Nice description of a downhill runner!

I'm sorry...
but Dwyer was a diesel. He ran over more players than he dodged. He worked hard for Tech and was as good a college running back as we’ve seen since Dorsey Levens. I don’t understand the hate for Dwyer. Someone who doesn’t work or doesn’t try doesn’t earn back to back 1,000 yard seasons.
The NFL sees a lot of talented players, chews them up, and spits them out. It’s not odd to see a stud college back fail at the pro level. I don’t think it’s an indictment of the system or the player. Kyle Eckel has made a career for himself at the pro level and he was a B back.
And I don’t expect Anthony Allen to replicate Dwyer’s stats. 1) I don’t think we’ll have the passing game of 2009. 2) I don’t think Allen is as fast as Dwyer. 3) I think we’ll see more balance between the A and B back carry load.

Just found this...
regarding the picture above:
Jonathan Dwyer went for 89 yards and a TD on 13 carries, a 6.8 average. Even if you “take away” his big run he still had a 4.1 average. He needed to have a big game to put his name in the 53 man roster discussion and last night certainly helped him.
Predator is just as much a diesel as Dwyer
Maybe moreso. You just don’t get to see it as much when he played wing back. He was an absolute battering ram at Louisville as a freshman, scoring 10 TD’s. What he may lack is breakaway speed from B Back, and any distance of production from Jon Dwyer will not be noticeable IMO. I don’t think we are going to have any games where we say wow if we still have Jon we would have won that game. Plus now we have 2 players who skills match the A Back position better now that AA switched over.
This continues to be a non-story to me
Tech will be just fine at B-back again this year.
As to speed comparisons, I think the main point is that B-backs rarely need blinding speed. More times than not if they get by the front defenders the secondary is out of position and don’t have enough time to recover before the end zone looms. Just from observation I would say that break away speed is a nice thing to have if you are more than 50 yards away from the end zone and even then it may not be necessary if the defense is totally fooled.

I agree
I think the big differences we’ll most likely see are WR dropoff and D improvement.

I would agree with that
I think a main thing we’ll see is an improvement in the D, though I do worry about our passing game. If we get a few guys who can produce, we may be even better off seeing as the defense would theoretically have more threats to concern themselves with….though I don’t know how easy it’ll be to make Hill, Melton, Jones, and Peeples all threats in the passing game.

I'm pretty excited
About Stephen Hill myself. Dont get me wrong, I dont think he’s gonna be as productive as #8 this year, but I look for some big strides from the kid.
IMO, he will be as good, if not better, than BayBay before he leaves school.
Maker's Mark--nectar of the gods...
I don't see how Dwyer's slow start in Pitssburgh
tarnishes his time or value here at Tech. We would have loved to have him back. Dwyer will get it together in due time, its just going to take a season or two. The NFL is a big leap for players not relying soley on speed to make a difference. Tashard Choice is another good example of that.
+1
We can become B-Back I here at Tech and we can relish their time on The Flats.
