We had a post similar to this before when we discussed where we were when we became Tech fans but today let's talk about how.

My story is pretty simple: I am a 4th generation Georgia Tech alumnus. In fact, my great-grandfather was a member of the very first graduating class of Civil Engineers. It's clearly my family school and I have known no other source of my fanhood. Though, the Institute has been a part of my life from the beginning there is always a moment that sparks the love that never dies for the Institute. I come from a military family, so while many of you attended games as young children, I was not given the chance to attend a Tech game until 2001 so I had to find my fanhood through a different way and honestly I cannot identify where or when it happened. I simply remember looking at the newspaper one day living in Massachusetts, so I was less than 10 years old, and I got really excited to see the Yellow Jackets were ranked #24 in the country. The rest, they say, is history. I ate Georgia Tech athletics up and became quickly obsessed and focused on the success of the programs.

What about yall? How did you become a Yellow Jacket fan?

I was born. Both Grandfathers went to tech and both parents went to tech

Set out for an education, got hooked on football...

I was never a team sports guy growing up. I was an athlete, but it was stuff like running and martial arts. I rarely watched football unless it was the super bowl or a random Houston Oilers (moment of silence please) game on TV when I was little.

Tech’s academic reputation preceded it, and when I moved to Atlanta from Texas I planned on going there when the time came. By the time highschool was over and I found myself on my first campus visit I already knew two things. 1) I hated anyone wearing red and a ‘G’ and 2) Tech had the big college atmosphere in a big city and was definitely going to change my suburb-clingin’ life.

I told myself I would join a fraternity and go to every home football game. It was 2005. Though I knew little about Tech or football I learned the songs, learned not to wear Navy, watched the Wreck in complete wonderment, and celebrated that season as we trashed both Auburn and Miami. I was hooked on college football in general and Georgia Tech in particular. I have been to every home game for the last 5 years and still dress up and scream my head off. I consider it my duty to a team forever on the rise. Many fans will say their school is this or that, but I brush it all off. No one has our rich history and tradition coupled with academic reputation and unique personality. I’m a Yellow Jacket for life, and I’ll never be sorry for that.

I was made

While my paternal grandfather and maternal uncle went to Tech, both of my parents went to Georgia, and I grew up a Georgia fan.

I went to Tech because it made sense academically: I really can’t tell you why I didn’t seriously consider going to Georgia. I should have considered it, and I probably disappointed my father by not doing so. By not going to UGA I missed Herschel Walker and a national championship. I mean, I didn’t miss them, but I wasn’t happy about them.

I had absolutely no connection to GT

Growing up in Orlando, until 7th grade. It was then I met one of my best friends dad’s and my life changed forever. The second Mr. Stratton (CE 81) sang me the ramblin wreck, I knew I wanted to go to Tech.

Watching the option

I absolutely love that offense and the way Tech runs it.

It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.

Its my Family Tradition...

simply put!

…. my mom jokes about me and my brothers all going to Tech and ppl asking her if we really had a choice in that decision…. well she puts it perfectly when she says " Oh, yes they did have choice. It was either go to Tech or go to Tech." she would also say how we didnt really want a choice of not going to Tech..

This is my Family Tradition

Some great tickets

Went through undergrad near home on the frozen tundra of the Northern Plains (North Dakota State… Go Bison!) and didn’t go to football games. Found myself at Tech for grad school and went through 2004 and 2005 without attending any sporting events. Come 2006, however, I found myself elected Graduate Student Body President. My first Tech football game? Notre Dame, at night, from DRad’s box. That year I got to watch two games from the President’s Suite. They were Samford (blech) and that phenomenal Maryland game with the goal-line stand. Also got to travel with the team and Institute dignitaries to and from the ACCCG that shall never be spoken of. At that point, I was hooked. For home games in 2007, I missed the Army game to go to a watch party to see my Bison take down the Golden Goofers of Minny-sota and maybe bailed on the Tarhole game. In 2008, I missed the GW debacle to be back in Fargo for a Bison game but made every other home game. I rushed the field to cheer the historic win over the Criminoles. I also went to the Clempsen game with some Clempsen fans. (Two Yellow Jackets and three Tiggers, but we sat in the Tech section.) Was at every home game this season and arranged travel after a fellowship interview in DC to make it to Tampa in time to cheer at the ACCCG. If I ever have kids, you can get they’ll definitely cheer for Tech (and the Bison, but Tech has a more important place in my heart now).

I think I was 6 or 7

My parents had a uga tire cover on the spare of the huge Econoline van we had. I remember looking at that bulldog every day and hating it because it was so ugly. Playing baseball during those years I became friends with a kid who always wore GT gear to practice. I asked him about the yellow jacket on his gear and he told me about GT and how “we” hate the bulldogs like the one on my parents van. I just happened to have an affinity for messing with yellow jackets nests in my neighborhood and I thought it all fit. I started asking my friends about watching games and was lucky enough to have discovered my fandom before the 1990 season. I haven’t looked back since.

Graduating high school I had a choice of either attending Tech or joining the military like every other male in my family had before me, so I went Marine Corps. It hasn’t stopped me from being a fan and while my wife pretends to be a uga fan, she knows more about Tech than she does Georgia, so I think I’ve got her converted. I’ve got three boys who all wear GT gear and hopefully I’ll have a girl to wear the White and Gold.

Yeah

I think that might have helped pull me in. His dad was a GT alum, CE I believe. Went to his house and his dad had a GT room. He also ended up being my soccer coach so the influence was strong from them.

Born Right

My early GT experiences were spent right down the street from the campus. Due to throat cancer my Grandad could barely talk…but he certainly communicated TECH.
We lived close enough to hear the old whistle (before they toned it down). The first football season after he died I was with my Grandmom each Saturday. When she would hear the whistle she would say “your grandaddy is happy”. Quite an impression on a 6 year old.

A terrible birthday present

It was October 6, 2005. I joined Swarm on a whim that year as a freshman and soon found myself arriving 30 minutes, then an hour, then 2 hours early for each home game, just to soak in the stadium atmosphere. For my birthday that year, all I wanted was to enjoy a day of football. So my family and friends made the drive down from Cherokee county, we tailgated all afternoon, and then we made our way into the stadium for the NC State game. Mhmm, that was my 18th birthday. I was in the front row of Swarm with 2 of my friends who would later come to Tech (I like to think I convinced them of Tech’s superiority) when that interception was thrown with 26 seconds left. I still remember the way the ball sounded when it landed in the NC State player’s hands. When the game ended, I said goodbye to my parents and friends and started walking home. Alone. In the rain. I was looking pretty miserable. Some guys offered me a beer, to which I replied “I’m only 18.” Turning down that beer was the final straw, and the tears started rolling. I went back to my apartment (8th Street West…as long of a walk home as possible), curled up on my bed, and cried. The next morning, I woke up determined to fully appreciate every win thereafter. It’s been 5 years, and I would relive every drip of blood, sweat, and tears I’ve given to this football team.
