Baseball faces first real test of the season at UNC

Stay connected for news and updates

The biggest series of the season is upon us as Georgia Tech heads to Chapel Hill for a 3-game series. This is big because UNC is not an ACC bottom feeder like Wake or Maryland. The Tarheels currently sit at 16-6 on the season and 2-4 in the ACC. They are unranked in the latest Baseball America poll but are ranked as high as 17th in other polls. Tech currently sits atop the Coastal Division in a three-way tie with Virginia and Miami and is ranked in the top-5 in multiple polls.

North Carolina's pitching staff will attempt to hold Tech's offense to a minimum as the Jackets have already hit 40 home runs in 18 games. The Tarheels' pitching staff averages just under 9 strikeouts per game and a 3.65  ERA. We will of course try to start the series off right with Deck McGuire on Friday, our 2010 National Pitcher of the Year candidate, who boasts a 1.15 ERA, a consistent mid-90s fastball and an overall vibe of complete awesomeness. He averages a strikeout an inning and is looking for more K's against the 'Heels.

This weekend will be a battle of North Carolina's pitching vs. Georgia Tech's bats. It will be a grand series and the weekend will tell us what to really expect from our team this year. Go Jackets!
