How to Fill Out a Bracket: Be a Homer or Use Your Head?

I just finished filling out my bracket in the FTRS Bracket Challenge.  This was probably one of the toughest things I've had to do all year!  As ridiculous as that sounds I think some of you can see where I'm coming from.

When your team (in this case, Tech, obviously) is in the tournament it makes filling out a bracket a very bittersweet task in my opinion.  On the one hand, I want to pick Tech to make a deep run in the tournament this year because I feel like we have favorable matchups for our team in the first and second rounds.  But on the other hand, we all know Tech has been wildly inconsistent, so trying to predict how we'll play is nearly impossible.

Tech is really great at breaking my heart too... especially in basketball.  In 2007 I picked Tech to go to the Sweet 16 (think back: Thad Young, Javaris, and some nice role players around them).  That team could have gone a long way.  That year was the first of 2 consecutive years where I got every pick correct on the first day of the tournament.  And I believe Tech played late afternoon on Friday against UNLV.  And up until the Tech game, I was still perfect with all my picks.  What happened?  Yup.  Tech spoiled everything.

What are your thoughts about picking your team in the tournament?  How far did you pick Tech to go this year?

“Put Georgia Tech down as the National Champions.”

I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.

I did that in 04

Even picked them to win over UCONN. Needless to say, I came in second in all my brackets.

I want to pick them....

….over Ohio St., but can’t bring myself to do it. Head vs. Heart ….winner = HEAD

Sweet 16 Baby!

Since the beginning of the year they’ve been saying Tech has Sweet 16 potential, I’m sticking with it. If it doesn’t happen, then I may change my “Yes” on the approval polls to a “No”.

Agreed

But Evan Turner is a nightmare to defend.

Nate Silver

who is the most consistent political prognosticator I know of has added a little ditty on how to pick teams for the office pool.

One way to do it

is to go ahead and pretend that Tech is going to play up to their potential then figure accordingly. At what point in the tournament then does a Tech win constitute an upset? This is where the road divides. If you say they will not upset anyone then the first loss is Ohio State. If you say that Tech is due an upset victory then they get past Ohio State and perhaps run deep into the tournament.

I picked a win in the first round

but a loss in the second. I figured two games in a row without screwing things up is too much to ask.

Yes, they won three in a row last week, but they played some crappy ball in those games. I don’t think they are going to get away with that in this tournament.
