Pre-NCAA Paul Hewitt Approval Rating
You watched our performance against the ACC's elite on a neutral court. We finished the season 10-10 overall in ACC play. Paul Hewitt recruited the ACC Rookie of the Year. If we don't have any unexpected defections, we'll return 80% of our guard minutes next season. If you strongly opposed Hewitt's abilities during the season, would a good season next year win you back?

Not drinking the Kool-Aid
I can’t be satisfied with squeaking into the Big Dance. This team was one half away from losing to NC, staying at home and (likely?) canning Hewitt. I want to read about what seed Tech will have every year, not whether they are getting into the tourney or not. Outside of the Duke game, in which I thought they showed a good deal of poise, the other three games in the ACCT were typical Hewitt-ball (turnovers, poor FT shooting, no offense, etc.). They beat two teams they should have beaten and another against which they match up very well.
ee8384… i agree. yeah hewitt recruited these guys, but if you think about it why wouldn’t a kid want to go to Tech to play basketball? Maybe that’s too simplistic a way of thinking but a coaches main focus and strength should be in coaching our players, not recruiting them. Check back in about an hour… I’ve got a post going up about this topic.
At this point I'm unwinnable.
It’s clear based on our seed that, had we lost to UNC, we would not have made the tournament.
I’m sick of waiting for a “good season next year.” We had our most talented team possibly ever and squeeked by as a 10 seed based on a late season hot streak.
It just blows my mind how a team like Pittsburgh, who only has 4 NBA draft picks this decade (all second rounders), has won 20 games 8 years in a row and made the tournament nine times out of nine. Even ignoring 2009, they were seeded 2 once, 3 four times, 4 once, 5 once, and 9 once. We’ve got arguably better talent than Pittsburgh, at least on par with them. It’s embarrassing that we can have the talent we do, yet only muster a 10 seed in our best season in three years.
I think Hewitt coaches
like the regular season isn’t very important. Constant substitutions trying to find good lineups. Then, come tournament time, he hopes for a berth and hopes that his team has meshed. Plus, the Hotel Hewitt substitution method works pretty well in tournaments (from my perspective) as our guys are always fresh allowing us to press late into tournament runs.
I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.
late in tournament runs?
That last happened in 2004.

Lots of harsh criticism here
which I have been listening to and taking very seriously. I have not made up my mind but I know what the indicators for me will be: If Tech goes out early in the tournament and if next year is yet another rebuilding year then I will feel all the critics were right. If Tech goes deep into the tournament and next year is a better season then I will realize that when it comes to Hewitt, patience is a virtue. Those who are done with Hewitt please don’t scoff at my line in the sand. I am just sharing where I am emotionally on this ride. I am as hungry as anyone else for Tech to be the elite power in basketball that it deserves to be.

I'm not scoffing at you
but I’m still wondering how patient we have to be? We last made the tournament in 2007, and last won a tournament game in 2005. To me, that’s not even being relevant in college basketball.
My question to you is, even assuming we make it deep into the tournament (say sweet 16 or elite eight), is it worth waiting five years for it to happen again? In other words, we haven’t done anything since 2004. Would it be worth waiting the same amount of time (6 years) for us to make it back to the sweet sixteen?
What happens at the end of next season if we win a game or two in the tourney this year and go 18-12 next year? If we make the tournament again next year as a 10-12th seed is that acceptable from your coach?
I happen to think it isn’t. This team is far more talented than a 10th seed (and probably should have been seeded higher based on results), but even when we are successful like we were last weekend, I have a lot of questions. I wonder if we should just throw out standard lineups and start Miller, Shumpert, Lawal, Favors and Peacock. I wonder why we aren’t going with a full court press the entire game. I wonder why we call timeouts when it makes no sense to do so. I wonder why, after all this time, we’ve yet to find a reasonable half court offense. All these concerns make me wonder why we put up with Hewitt.
Again, how patient do you need to be? Aren’t we supposed to be good more than once every 6 years?

You missed one caveat
in my statement. I not only want to see a deep run into the tournament this year I do not want to see a big fall off in performance next year. I will need to see effective performance both this year and next. The only exception to this would be if the unimaginable happened and we won the NCAA championship. I think most all of us would then be willing to accept a drop off next year as well as keeping Hewitt.
I do agree with much of what you say however. I cannot for instance understand why we have so much trouble inbounding the ball. Even the positioning of players seems wrong to me on this let alone the results. But thanks for not scoffing.
