Monday Discussion: What does Tech need to do?

I was thinking about this after reading an interview of Hewitt by Doug Roberson and Coley Harvey. There was a proverbial line drawn in the sand by Hewitt and his opposition within the Tech family. I was wondering what it would take for you all to cross the line to other side. What does Hewitt need to do to redeem himself? What does the team need to show you that would prove that they are under the correct leadership or are going in the right direction?

It may be too late.

I wish this weren’t true but I’m afraid many of our fans are completely fed up. This became even more clear to me after attending the game this weekend. This dumbass behind me was a total Negative Nancy. Even after good plays. If we stole the ball on a great defensive play, he would say something like “Oh, we’re just gonna turn it over again”. It took every ounce of energy not to turn around and punch this guy.

I’m not saying Hewitt is doing a great job and we should keep him around, but you’ve got to give praise where it is due. I thought we played a great game this week (minus the last 20 seconds or so). I’ve never been a fan of “I hope we lose so we can get a new coach”. If we keep winning, then what’s the problem? Isn’t that what we want?

yeah I understand the frustration

but I think basketball can be turned around in a year (hence winning 7 ACC games versus 2 last year). If we make a solid run at the end of the season, I hope we keep Hewitt.

I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.

Win the next 2

If my calculations are correct then if we win the next 2 and Wake drops a game (FSU?) then we end up with the 4 seed going into the ACC tourney (tiebreakers considered). Big if’s I know. But if we did get the 4 seed I would think we should make at least the Semis (against Duke) and have a real chance to win it. I think winning the ACC tourney would stop all the bickering (short of 1 and done in the NCAAs – then that is a whole new world of bad). If we don’t get the 4 seed I don’t see a real shot a winning the ACC Tourney. I guess all I’m saying here is win two + a little luck puts us in a pretty good position to start the post season. Anything else is going to be a real stuggle.

Finish with 20 wins

go to ACC champ game and sweet 16…that’s what will at least keep me in the pro-Hewitt camp

A prolonged period of solid play

and good fundamental basketball. This includes, but is not limited to, making free throws, being able to inbound the ball against a press, knowing what to do once the ball is inbounded, good passing into and out of the post, solid defense (one thing that is going right now), not squandering timeouts, and an effective overall offensive strategy.

The only way for me to change my mind on Hewitt now is to see that over a long period of time. For the last 5 years or so, we have displayed those qualities in flashes, never consistently. The outcome of this season, no matter what it is, will sway me from my belief that Hewitt is a strong limiting factor on Tech basketball. Seeing these things over several seasons, just as we have seen failures in these things over several season, is what it would take to change my opinion.

Jaxon nailed it

Fans went into the season expecting something close to a Sweet 16 run and a 20 win season. With this amount of talent on the team, those are not unrealistic goals.

Tech needs to right the basketball ship asap because the fans are getting apathetic as you can see at the basketball games. With baseball playing very well and football on the overall upswing, it’s easy to forget about mediocre basketball.

We need a run in the ACC tourney to get out of the

8 and 9 seed range. I do not want a 2nd round match-up with a #1 seed, but Syracuse would be my choice if it is to be

SI has us as an 11 seed, while ESPN has us as a 7.

We have a little room for error with the Clemson game, but the VT is pretty much a must win if we lose to Clemson. We have traditionally struggled against Seth Greenberg teams too, so that is kind of scary.

Our longest win streak in conference has been two games (achieved once), so we haven’t really shown the consistency to make an ACC tourney run.

Greenberg 5-2 against Hewitt.

Before the season I said 10-6 in conference would get me back in the CPH camp

which of course is not possible. One of the things that troubles me the most is how inconsistent our teams have been and I was hoping for a more consistent conference season. If we won four more games this year, I would be OK with keeping Hewitt but I would still be pretty nervous about the future. With the contract, I realize that we are most likely keeping him another year. I wish I had Bird’s confidence for next season but I don’t.
