HD Rant
A few days ago I read Heather Dinich's post Questions Surround Georgia Tech on the ESPN web site. She was almost predicting Tech was going to have a down year in football due primarily to all of the coaching changes. In the past I have wondered why Tech fans were so hostile to Heather and in my mind found myself defending her. Then she writes this piece. It is not that she may not be right, Tech may indeed have a somewhat down year, it is just that she seemed to be straining for reasons. In the end she almost suggest tension among the coaching staff and a slightly veiled inference that coaches were leaving as a result. I could go on but I would invite others who have not read the article to do so and see what their take is on it.
I still do not hate Heather but for the first time I am seriously starting to doubt her ability to analyze an athletic program. It was as if she was just trying to dream up something to write about. What is your take on this?

I'm not too worried
Coaches that are offered upgrades to their current positions should move up. I’d imagine coaches that were hires/friends of Chan would want to work with him again especially if it means stepping stones to HC positions.
I don’t see how the defense could be any worse. The offense may struggle with out the play makers at wideout/bback but the defense is going to be better. It has to be.
I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third.
Agreed
I too am not concerned about the coaches; I was just trying to figure out why HD seemed to want to “stir up” a controversy where there is none. Now if she had written about the possible fall off after losing four key starters I would not have had a beef with her column.

well
I think she’s just posing a harmless question. The general public is probably wondering what effects the GT coaching moves will have. However, I’m of the belief that talent is the key to college football and that if there’s a dropoff, it’ll be because we’re missing key individuals and big plays not because we lost our A-backs coach or recruiting coordinator.

you must be a Tech man. :-)

My theory
is that
A – She has to write a certain number of articles a day, or at least a certain number of words. We’ve all got “metrics” to meet in our jobs these days, and
B – She may also have to generate a certain number of page views, again to justify her pay check. Controversial shit gets more page views because people like you talk about it and link to it.
She’s doing it because she wants to keep her job. There’s no shortage of things to write about during the season, but this time of year has got to be tough.
She’s not as bad as Mark Bradley and Jeff Schultz, who seem to get paid by the number of obnoxious idiot comments on their blogs.
Ouch!
“People like me . . .” well, I guess I have been told.

I didn't mean that in a negative way
She generates more page views when people link to her, and controversial posts generate more links. Like this one. How’s that?
In her business any attention really is good attention, because attention, good or bad, is that pays the bills.
It's a dumb post
We might struggle next year but it won’t be because of the coaching changes. We have a new defensive coordinator so it shouldn’t hurt us too much losing some position coaches. If anything, we can now bring in assistants that have more familiarity with the system. The bigger concern is probably recruiting, but that won’t affect us as far as next season goes. As far as losing Jeff Monken, not too worried, CPJ appears to have everything under control.
Agreed again
So my question is whether it was just a one time dumb post or is this an indication of how “deeply” she studies in her chosen career.

From an outside perspective
I think it’s just a fluff post.
I think Miami is getting better… GT is solid and VT is solid. Nothing new there… and GT could be 1st or 3rd. Don’t ever read too much into an ESPN article, that’s giving them too much credit.

Fluff
is a good description. I agree that Tech could be 1st, 2nd or 3rd but it will be determined by nuanced variables and breaks, not some supposed coaching crisis as HD implies.

Agreed
I mean… yeah it MIGHT have an effect, but who knows… that effect could be equally good or bad.

Look at FSU
They’ve changed out 5 coaches… and it’s perceived that it is a HUGE benefit. So yeah, it’s an HD fluff post, since they have to write about SOMETHING. :)

haha yeah who knows where FSU is gonna be
But TN calls it the best coaching team in the country! giggle

I think GT finishes 3rd or 4th in the Coastal
because they lost all of their good defensive players and are @ UNC, @ Clemson, and @ VTech
I'll believe UNC when I see them actually be worth something.
But yes, the defense has the potential to be shakyyyyy next year

our defense cannot get worse
When we lost actual leaders on the defense like James Butler, Dawan Landry, Gerris Wilkinson, Key Fox, Daryl Smith, etc., we had much bigger gaps on the defense. Next year we will not allow 500 ppg and 1,000 yards per game like we did in 2009.
I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third.
And not just because
there is nowhere to go but up. I like Tech’s secondary and I think the defensive line is actually going to be stronger this year because the new scheme will create more depth at that position. Linebacker is where I get nervous but Groh is supposed to be an expert when it comes to linebacker play.

Not to belabor the point but
I never disliked her, nor did I find much of the criticism of her to be fair. It is just that this article had an undertone to it that was potentially hurtful to several individuals and not something a professional would write unless they had solid proof.

I don't dislike her either
She’s not good at making predictions, but nobody else is, either.
I don’t know why sports bloggers/talk show hosts/columnists feel compelled to make predictions. I not a big fan of opinions; I prefer reports of facts and possibly the interpretation of same.
I really don’t give a shit who anyone thinks will win any game. I never make predictions (especially of Tech games; I have been a fan too long). Predictions have no effect on the outcome of games (unless bribes are involved). Nobody is good at them. They are a complete waste of time.
I can listen to Beano Cook and Ivan Maisel talk for hours about the history of football, but I zone out when they start making predictions.
She posted her ACC's pre-spring power rankings this morning
and we’re 6th. She states, “Odds are the offense makes a seamless transition with Anthony Allen at B-back”. So, our ACC Championship team improves on defense and “makes a seamless tranisition” on offense. How does that translate to 6th in the league?!?! As a result of her power rankings, it appears the ACC has taken over as the best football conference in the country – as we’re a top 15 team & there are 5 other ACC teams better than us!!
I can't beleive it either
But fortunately HD’s approval doesn’t win football games for us, otherwise we would have been 8-5 last year.

Historically she has been very accurate...
In August of 2008 she had us at 9th in her power rankings, which turned out to be true as we didn’t do very good at all that year. Last year she projected us to end up 3rd in the ACC, behind FSU, and as we all saw, FSU was the much better team this past season. She has FSU projected to finish 2nd again this year, which I fully believe is going to happen.
Uh
you are being sarcastic right?

Yeah
I just read that too. Is that not the most illogical post you’ve ever seen! Tech is number six in the conference but in the top fifteen nationally. And as you also so adroitly pointed out, Tech gets better but gets worse. I’m not liking Heather so much these days.
