CPJ on recruiting rankings
From Jeff Schultz:
I know Johnson, Georgia coach Mark Richt and most college coaches have the same opinion I do — that the attention paid to this whole recruiting thing has gotten way out of control and that the grades and rankings given by websites like Rivals and Scout are relatively nonsensical.
Interesting observation from Johnson, whose recruiting class not surprisingly was ranked in the 40s nationally by most websites: "I’ll give you a great example about these rankings. All four of our defensive back commitments were recruited by the other state school [Georgia]. So I wonder if they had gotten them, how high would they have been ranked."
(How about Johnson referring to Georgia as "the other state school"?)
Obvious question to Johnson: So you’re suggesting some schools get the benefit of the doubt?
Johnson smiled and said, "It’s whoever has the most subscriptions, I guess."
More from the Tech coach: "The whole process has gone bonkers. You’re talking about kids who’ve never played a down yet. Nobody can pick who’s going to be the next great player. It’s all about how hard are you wlling to work. There’s so many factors involved. I read somewhere that the Indianapolis Colts have one five-star recruit on the whole roster – Peyton Manning. They have 32 or 37 players who were 3-star or below. What does that tell you?"

Wow...30+ Colts were 3 star recruits or lower
that does tell you a lot. I was impressed with some of the statements from some of the recruits and how energized some of them appear to be coming to the Flats. Things are looking up

the NFL and college are different
The odds of being a 5 star, not being injured in college, and making the NFL are a lot lower than the MASS of 3 stars that aren’t injured and make the NFL. I wouldn’t be surprised if a higher percentage of 5 star guys actually made NFL rosters.
However, I do think the whole recruiting business is ridiculous as well. We fill the kids up with these grand expectations and then slap ‘em down once they’re stuck with us.
I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third.

As someone once said. . .
If five star recruits were the only key to success Southern Cal would not have finished as a .500 team in their own conference and would have won the national championship the last four years in a row.
