Jaybo is leaving
We have it on good authority that Jaybo Shaw, our backup QB, will be leaving Tech after the spring semester to pursue football elsewhere. While it is not confirmed, the little birdie in our ear is telling us that he will be enrolling at Georgia Southern to play for Jeff Monken (former Tech A-backs coach). The reasons for this are not yet clear, but one might be because of the talent level of the 2 redshirt freshman QBs who will be getting some reps in spring ball this year.
We will have more details for you as we confirm them. This news makes spring practice even more critical than ever. The only QB who will participate in spring ball who has seen game time is Tevin Washington (Nesbitt will be out due to ankle surgery). We wish Jaybo luck in his future endeavors.

Eligability
Since he is transferring down into FCS will he have to sit out a year? Since he still has a redshirt I guess it won’t matter much though. This will be a great start for southern to get the option football back up

If true this may be for the best
Jaybo is a gutsy performer and fun to watch against second tier teams but it was painful to watch him against teams with strong defensive linemen. I often wondered if Tech’s offensive line were a little stronger whether that would give him time to make reads or drop back to pass but I guess we may never know. Nesbitt seemed to be able to neutralize a strong defensive rush by being a powerful inside runner. Jaybo should do well at Southern and I too wish him well.

tough part
he was most competent back up in the ACC. Leaves our QB depth chart kinda shaky in the experience department.
I spun around... and there I was, face-to-face with a six-year old kid. Well, I just threw my guns down and walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.
Transfer rules
If you transfer down a level (FBS > FCS > DII > DIII > NAIA), then you don’t have to sit.
If you transfer across the same level, then you have to sit (unless you’re in DIII).
If you transfer up a level, then you have to sit.

If you graduate
and are pursuing a graduate degree that is not offered at your current institution, you can also transfer across the same level (e.g. Taylor Bennett).

Plus, if you transfer at the same level in the same conference, don’t you have to sit out 2 years?

Doesn't some of this depend on whether a school releases you to transfer?
You have people like Choice that don’t have to sit out because of a hardship as well.
I think this will be a good football move for Jaybo
He is not an NFL guy, so if he wants to have the most playing time, he should go ahead and transfer. He had the initial advantage over Tevin because of his high school experience with the offense. By now that advantage is probably used up so there is no guarantee that he will be the guy once Nesbitt graduates. Only downside for him is missing out on that GT degree. Hopefully he will do great down there.
he could
do the GT degree at Southern. I always heard stories of goofy GSU kids on teleconference with GT classes and professors getting tired of their questions and muting the GSU kids.

It's awkward when that happens.
Lots of very deep southern twangs as well coming randomly from the ceiling.

This always bothered me. They’re not getting the full Tech abuse, but they get a Tech degree? Lame. Maybe if I teleconference some classes at MIT, I can have a degree from MIT.
On Jaybo, his 2008 work when Nesbitt was hurt won’t be forgotten. Thanks, Jaybo, and good luck!
Back ups?
So our backups will be Washington as 2 with Luallen and Sims fighting for 3rd? I wonder if this will impact any of our new recruits who might have played DB instead.

Word says that Washington is moving to A-back.

Wow
If that is true then Sims or Luallen must be the truth, and I have yet to see anything like that from Sims. Spring ball will definitely be huge this year. And with our depth at A-back maybe Coach Johnson finally realized Washington was not going to get it at QB, alot of questions to be answered.
GL to Jaybo
My only problem with Jaybo was that for whatever reason he never seemed to get any bigger after high school. This could simply be a perception thing, but he just always looked too small to me. Then again, it’s hard to fill in for Josh The Beast Nesbitt when he is such a haus.

I hope
he gets another shot at Georgie’s D. GSU always puts up a good fight against the dogs in the first half. I wouldn’t be surprised if they schedule Southern now to add on to their Tech practices.
