The Perfect End To The Perfect Season: Georgia Tech vs. Air Force
First, if you had told me that we would lose to Air Force because we were outscored by giving up only 14 points, I would have laughed in your face.
I am not a fan of. 500 football teams going to bowl games. I don't think they deserve it. The opportunity to finish with a losing record is sad and embarrassing. Our bowl streak should have come to an end this year. Instead, it continues to live on in relative futility.
Nothing was accomplished this year. The player development was shaky and the defense very rarely stood their ground and made the key stops we relied on so much last year. It was a year of disappointment and failed expectations. We can't rant and rave about the game last night because it's the perfect illustration of the entire season: 85% good and 15% bad. Only the 15% bad comes inside the 30 yard line, where you need to punch it in, and you just can't seem to pass that point.
Looking ahead we have a lot of work to do, a LOT of work. Special teams needs its own coordinator and surely some questions surround the quarterback situation. Perhaps defensively something clicked last night? Regardless Al Groh has had his trial period and next year he must make sure our team gets it!
Let's move on to spring sports and I look forward to the 2011 National Championship.

As some may recall I suggested we should skip the bowl this year
My reasoning, which I will be happy to change my mind about if someone can show me a sound argument, is that not going to a bowl this year would have said our expectations are higher than those other desperate teams that “beg, borrow and steal” just to get into a bowl. We are better than that. When we don’t meet our own standards of success we do not stoop to the lower standards of other programs. Not going would have said this season is over, next year we resume our path toward perfection.
As it is I now worry that capping the season off this way will contaminate those who must stay at Tech and play on future teams. They are no longer part of a winning tradition. They are used to losing. Their confidence is shaken and they will always have doubts in the back of their minds even when winning that maybe, just maybe, they can once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

They had to spend time in Shreveport
Isn’t that punishment enough…
In all honesty, your point of view isn’t invalid, but I’m not sure if the school would voluntarily opt out of a bowl game, especially when money is involved.
worst game I have watched under PJ
That one was all on special teams and the offense. Defense largely dominated except when forced to be on the field due to so many turnovers. PJ must get the special teams in order. It cost us a great number of games this year (VT and AFA come to mind first).
I hope PJ is extremely upset, because he seems to do his best work with a chip on his shoulder. This team was very poor for much of the season and much is needed to improve. I am a big PJ fan, but those questions of the PJ offense working long term at the highest level with his own recruits continue to linger after games and seasons like the past one.
I am also a big PJ fan
But he left me scratching my head a lot this year. His playcalling seemed very panicked and impulsive at times. Even some of the conversions that we DID execute had me wondering why we go for it. I think the offense will be fine for the most part long term, I just don’t understand why we didn’t adjust for our lack of receivers who can catch a football (among other things). This loss is very frustrating though. I can see why an argument can be made to decline the bowl invite, but this should have been a game to win and get the monkey off of our back. Ugh.
Paul Johnson has done...
more with the talent left him than the prior staff ever did. However, the players themselves have to shoulder the responsibility for their never ending mistakes and miscues that cannot be laid at the feet of this staff. Catch the pass; catch the punt; hold onto the football when being tackled! All of these fall under the category of effort and pride. Time some of these kids look in the mirror and decide if they want to become better football players.
Problems aren't with X's and O's
The plays and whatnot are fine. This team had no mental toughness. It was a team full of chokers. When the time came to make the play, the didn’t do it. The coach may be to blame, or it could have just been a bad group this year. Not sure what the coaches could have done more on the punt return plays (except maybe pull the guy after the first fumble). The players have to execute the simple plays and quit shooting themselves in the foot.
Spring sports? How about Winter Sports?
With only one ACC team in the top 25, we’ve got nothing but upside?!? /he says sheepishly
I’ll pimp for the January 14-15 Hockey Tourney in Savannah. Friday night vs. Free Skates University, Saturday night vs. the nadlickers. Get a 2 month head start on picking out your St. Patrick’s Day viewing site!

I'll be there
played 2004-2009. Tech Hockey looks pretty good this year, I would think they would be favored for the tourney. Great setup and awesome city.

Injury reports?
Did they ever say what was wrong with Tarrant?
How about Tevin on the last interception? Looked like a knee.
still a fan
I’m looking ahead to the potential of a championship run in either 2013 or 2014, under the helm of Vad. This year, the team lacked charisma, lacked swagger. There was a lo of swagger last year. We need for someone or a group of someones to be an enthusiastic leader. yes the 2010 team had Nesbitt and Allen and Bedford and other senior warriors, but none seemed to be charged with leading the raw emotion needed. Of course this is my perspective from the couch verses a perspective from the huddle – however perception is reality. Still a fan, but will be expecting much more precision and execution in 2011.

I hope you are right
but to me it looks like 2011 will be another not so great year. There was no reason for this team to have had a losing season this year. The fact that they did even with all of the returning players from the ACC championship squad does not bode well. I am afraid many of these will have to graduate before a new and improved stock of players can reverse the losing mentality of the team.

sorry to sound so negative; I just think we are starting over and will have to crawl before we can walk, if you will pardon the cliche.
