Us vs the Vols?
That’d be REALLY interesting for me at work. Two of my direct team members are Vol fans. Neither of them attended, but they are from TN. Kinda like 99% of dumbass mutt fans.
THWG!
I swear I hate that play he calls on 4th and short.
It has never ever ever worked to draw someone offsides. Everyone knows we do it. It has only ever hurt us. STOP FREAKING DOING THAT.
THWG!
I wouldn't mind it half as much if we actually ran a play once in a while
And I really feel like a ‘double load option’ of sorts could be devastating there. But no. We haven’t run a play from that formation since circa-VT of ’09.
I still say Groh sucks.
People disagree with me but I stand by my assertion. AJ Green uncovered on 1st down mutts and they threw it to that wide open moron.

Thank God
we actually made it all the way down the field without a turnover!
We’re playing fairly solid. Defense REALLY needs to step up and find a solution to their passing game. Of course, that’s been our weakness since I can recall being a Yellow Jacket.
THWG!
Once again, Al Groh. Needs to be fired.
We have one of the worst defenses in the country. 60th in points allowed.
We can NOT cover a passing attack for shit.
THWG!
60th
That’s exactly the middle, not the worst in the country. And he hasn’t even had a chance to recruit for his system. Calm down.

Georgia really hasn't been playing that well.
When you look at teams that play us historically, they started gunning for our star player. Namely, Jon Dwyer. This year, they started gunning for Nesbitt because he has been played up to be the big star and the big threat.
Everyone knew coming into this game that AJ Green was the big offensive threat for the mutts. Why he was left wide open at the beginning of the game. Shutting down their run offense obviously became a priority last year when their QB couldn’t pass to save his life. Now, they have a QB with a competent arm. We need to be covering receivers worth a damn.
We’ve got 21 points now and Georgia should only have 7 at best. Honestly, we should have 28, or at LEAST 24. Getting stripped on the 5 yd made us look like a novice squad.
THWG!
A little slack, please
Lack of pass rush is putting too much pressure on the secondary. Need to build up the D line for the 3-4.
Smith is a good runner, but runs a little upright, which made him an easy strip target. He’ll learn to run lower.
Tech is realistically playing for next year at this point. I’m thrilled with how they are doing tonight – a win would be a bonus. Some PT for the underclassmen, 15 more practices, a good bowl game and I’m feeling pretty optimistic that they can contend for the ACC title again next year.
Why should UGA have only 7 points?
Georgia’s been pretty balanced tonight, and Orson Charles has 2 TD’s. Just covering AJ Green wouldn’t change much.
Secondary coverage has always been lacking.
There’s generally always a 5 yard padding for receivers to make a catch. We’ve done a much better job covering the run this season.
THWG!
I thought I understood the blocking schemes.
But we’re blocking people WAAAAY down field and bypassing defenders that make tackles 2 and 3 yards beyond the line. What the hell is the point in blocking safeties when linebackers are lighting us up?
THWG!
Need a stop
Stop, punt, 7 minute drive, go for two – Tech 36, UGAg 35.
Yeah great job Scottie.
Everyone talks about how great a kicker he has been this year. I for one, did not forget his performance through 7/10 of last season. I have not forgiven him and THIS IS WHY.
THWG!
Davies is making me ill
Everything GA does is because they are such great athletes. Everything Tech does is because of the system.
He needs to look at the scoreboard.
ESPN sucked SO MUCH uga COCK
It’s like all they talked about was, “This is SO IMPORTANT FOR RECRUITING GUYS. I’M BEING SOOPER SERIAL RIGHT NOW. SERIAL.” And then, “OMG AJ GREEN I LOVE YOU PLEASE PRESENT YOUR COCK FOR SUBSEQUENT ESPN BLOWJOB”. And then, “But I have no idea how they would EVER get a decent wide receiver to come play in this Paul Johnson Triple Option (I cringe) scheme…..”
Fuck you ESPN.
Recap
So GT played the dogs far far better than anyone expected. I’ll grant this. Our backup QB impressed a LOT of people, I believe. He doesn’t have the brute force that Nesbitt has, but he’s a bit more agile and evasive when it comes to letting him run it. His throwing is generally more accurate, though he breaks QUICKLY under pressure. Our "two minute drill" puts way too much pressure on him and he doesn’t seem to be able to handle it. Hopefully this will change in time. Scott Blair has always been a very very mediocre player up until the very end of last season and the bulk of this season until we REALLY needed him tonight. This is why I have not forgotten nor forgiven his awful performance in the past. The defense was true to their numbers i.e. 59th in the nation for yards allowed by defense. Run defense looked vastly improved over last year vs georgie (let’s face it we had NO defense vs georgie last year on the ground and Womack did NOTHING to adapt during the game.) Our pass coverage is and as long as I can remember, HAS been laughable. Receivers generally get a 5 yard cushion from coverage. For those of you that play NCAA Football on a console, this is akin to setting your pass coverage to "Conservative: give up the catch but not many yards after the catch" vs "aggressive: higher chance for interceptions and swats but more likely to get burned on yards after the catch".
Furthermore, the play calling after georgie gave us a second chance was aPAULing. (See what I did there?) There was no reason whatsoever to be passing every play when we had 2.5 minutes remaining with a time out and ALL WE NEEDED WAS 30 – 40 YARDS TO GET IN FIELD GOAL RANGE. That resulted in us needing to let georgie back into the endzone to make it an 8 pt game rather than 1. At this point we actually NEEDED to get into the endzone rather than field goal range. Fine. But on the kick off TELL YOUR FUCKING KICK RETURNER TO NOT RUN INTO THE DAMN CLUSTERFUCK OF PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD!!! For the love of all things sacred at least TRY to avoid people and reverse direction and get SOMEWHERE near the 50. At that point, yes it did become necessary to throw on every down. But as expected, with a novice QB each subsequent throw increases the odds that he’ll be intercepted and eventually, statistics caught up with him.
TL;DR SUMMARY:
Tech did better than we expected, especially with Nesbitt being out. Our pass defense was weak as usual. Stupid mistakes gave Georgia the edge, piss poor play calling at the end completely destroyed any chance of an epic last-second comeback.
THWG!
Disagree
2.5 minutes would be an ETERNITY for something like the Oregon offense that’s built on a quick tempo and lots of passing. For Tech, without mixing in sufficient passing and without getting 15 yards a play, there’s no way we get off more than 6 plays in that span. And that’s part of us sucking at passing, yes, but still, we can’t pull a Les Miles LOL 6 SECONDS LEFT AT THE 40 AND DOWN A FIELD GOAL LETS RUN DERP either. I liked the play calling as far as the whole passing thing goes. What I don’t like is our passing playbook of roughly 1 play, give or take 2. They were incredibly repetitive with it, and while I understand that Washington was about to crap his pants out of nervousness (my pants would have long since been soiled, so props to him), you gotta get a little more creative than the scripted, “snap, rolls to his right, looking, stares down Stephen Hill, makes eye contact, nods, winks, now throws, INCOMPLETE”.
To prepare for next year we need to watch some of the tapes from Navy these past 3 years. They run the system like a thing of beauty, because the passing game is perfectly in sync with the rest of the offense. There wouldn’t be 28 run plays before the first pass….there would be 4, 5, maybe 6, then a pass or two, and it would work like a run-heavy offense, as opposed to our run-always offense. I also think Washington has the skill set to make that happen.
Easy on throwing Blair under the bus… All those kids played their hearts out. I’m angry that we lost too. Going in, I thought we didn’t stand a chance (2nd string QB on a short three weeks running a precision read offense, no consistency all season, etc.) but in the end, we gave the game away on fumbles. Had we executed on one of those drives where we turned the ball over in the red zone, we’d have won that game going away… Things to bear in mind:
1) All the things that we beat ourselves with last night CAN be fixed.
2) The defense WILL get better. Groh is the right man for the job, and once the offense starts executing better, we will be much more successful.
3) Our coaching is vastly superior to most every team we played this year (ESPECIALLY the team we played last night). In all seriousness, Richt against Johnson is like bring a knife to a gun fight… They are the right guys.
Conversely:
UGA is likely losing Green. Their offensive line is a train wreck, likely not to get any better in the near future. Their defense, (while talent wise should be better) will likely not improve by any leaps and bounds next year. We know their track record with letting talent languish… And they now have to jump both UF AND USC (who isn’t getting any worse next year). Murray may be a good prospect, but Green is a huge loss for a young QB.
All in all, I am happier with our program now than I have been in a long time.

The better coach will win the game
And Richt is 2-1 against Johnson. In Richt’s first three years, Georgia went 32-8 with two SECCG appearances and one win. That also included a 2-1 bowl record and a 3-0 record against Georgia Tech. In Johnson’s first three years, he has gone 26-12, has 1 ACC championship, an 0-2 bowl record (which still doesn’t quite reflect how embarrassing those bowl losses were), a 1-2 record against Georgia, declining recruiting talent, and now a 6-6 season. At best they’re a draw. Nothing I’ve seen in either the Clean, Old Fashioned Hate game or in any other games points to the “knife to a fun fight” superiority you talk about.
Easy there, sport.
I in no way think Johnson was outcoached. Go watch that game again. Georgia had no overly impressive moments from a strategic standpoint. Johnson and Groh were always much quicker to adjust and tweak to fix their gameplan. Georgia won on straight athleticism. Give both teams the same resources (players) and Tech walks out of there with a 3-touchdown win, I bet. Our players are just not as physically gifted as theirs. Richt even commented about us letting them score at the end, saying “It was poor coaching on our part” (or something to that effect, anyways). And if you think about it, at that point in the game, the difference was a missed XP, or maybe a dropped fumble here or there. You cannot, absolutely CANNOT blame those things on coaching.
We aren’t Georgia. We don’t have an endless recruiting pool, we don’t generally get first pick in athletes, and we are miles more academically excellent. That means we have to do what we can with what we have, and honestly, I think last night we did a damn good job of that, essentially keeping what was supposed to be a 14 pt game to a 1 pt game. In the Orange Bowl, we didn’t get humiliated. We lost by 10 points, after Iowa scored a touchdown with about 3 minutes to go, because their line is inherently enormous. LSU the year before was known for having a top-5 defense nationally. Now is not the time to blame Johnson. He’s done a damn good job with what he’s had to work with in my opinion, and deserves more time to build up the program here.
It's funny how you seem to forget Georgia's three turnovers
and the bad spot on the 5 early in the game. How many of your points did those account for? You had every opportunity to win this game, and you didn’t. Your team failed to take advantage of a multitude of chances. And yes, I do believe that much of that had to do with coaching. Why not go for a field goal on that first drive? Why not go for two on the last td? Why try the same pass play three times in a row at the end of the game? As far as adjusting on D, where did that happen? AJ Green and Orson Charles were wide open all night long, the same windback run play worked probably 6-7 times. The Georgia O did not have to adjust because your defense did nothing to stop it.
I’m also tired of hearing how GT can’t get top recruits. You aren’t Stanford, Vanderbilt, Duke, Northwestern, or even Notre Dame. You are a state school, and as such, your standards can be and are relaxed on a regular basis. How do you think Chris Bosh or Joe Hamilton got in there? CPJ’s predecessor pulled in several good recruiting classes (which have fueled his first few years) at your school that is “academically miles ahead”, so why can’t he? GT has no excuse for poor recruiting: it’s in a big market; it’s in one of the top recruiting states; your athletes do not have to take the hard majors; the school has a commitment to winning; and you have a tradition-laden program. You should be able to recruit good, physically gifted players all day long.
Don’t misunderstand me, I think CPJ is a good coach who is going to be around a while for GT. He fits your school’s personality perfectly . His track record thus far, however, does not point to him being a better coach than Mark Richt in my opinion.
From an educational standpoint, we are in the same boat as vandy, Stanford, and all those other schools. To get the Hamiltons and Bosch’s of the worlds into Tech is one thing. We only take exemptions on less than 5% of our athletes (95% at the SEC schools – Vandy). The reason for this is that once they get here, they have to make grades, even if they were “graced” in. I wouldnt have made it as an SA with my grades, and I didn’t have the extra stresses of practice. Finding a kid who can do both is difficult. Additionally, we don’t have programs like “Home Engineering” or whatever that abomination of a college degree program Caleb King is in to hide these kids that can’t cut it in the normal colleges. Since Johnsons been here, we’ve had to turn kids away who couldn’t make it academically, more for their own sake than for ours. The fact that we are the arguably the 3rd best engineering school in the country holds far more sway than having an exceptional football program with questionable athletes. Getting close to half a BILLION a year in research $$$$ will dictate that.
More to the fact, two factors have given Johnson a losing record against UGA:
1) A GA D lineman wrenched Nesbitts ankle in 09 (coaching has NOTHING to do with that)
2) A freshman QB running a read option offense as a starter in his third week made one bad decision (yet again, not something coaching has anything to do with… JN injury)
The defense performed fine… They only allowed 28 points. (removing the obvious defensive TD and the allowed TD at the end). We scored 34 in the game even with our mistakes…
If Richt is that much better of a coach (or even a coach at the “same level”) as Johnson, then why is half the fan base offering to help Richt move if Miami or Colorado is offering??? Didn’t he just beat his hated in state rival?

Ok, I'll answer each point in turn.
Georgia Tech is a good school, a great school even. But you don’t have near the admissions standards as the Stanfords, Vanderbilts, or Dukes of the country. You’re average SAT isn’t even as high as Virginia or UNC. Most of your SA’s don’t take Engineering, they take “Science and History” or management. You take well deserved pride in your schools engineering reputation, but don’t be so naive to think that because of that reputation you are restrained into recruiting because you can only recruit geniuses.
Don’t start with the “wrenching the ankle” stuff. Most of the people on this site admitted that was unintentional. He was out for one drive that game, and you had to punt several times with him anyway. Why couldn’t he have scored on those? As far as this year, you had 512 yards and 34 points. You lost because you couldn’t pass at the end with your better passing QB. Do you really think it would have made that big a difference with Nesbitt in there?
At least 14 of those 34 points came off 2 Georgia turnovers, with another coming after Georgia got a bad spot on the 5. Georgia gave away points too.
As far as the last bit, you should read some of Tech’s fan boards. The unreasonable half of your fanbase isn’t too happy with 6-6 either.
I will also add that we’ve recruited fine. We’ve been competitive in our conference, and will be while Johnson is here. There has only been one game that we were truly out of during his tenure, and we were projected favorites in that game (LSU)
by Rob_The_Slender on Nov 30, 2010 10:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I’m more angry that we lost to a bad team than the fact that that was UGA. If you think that hurts us in recruiting, any kid that legitimately watched that game and still would commit to UGA was going to commit to them anyway… UGA has a bigger problem now havingvto prevent Bama, USC, Auburn, and Florida from raiding the state more than we have to worry about it. With the academic “situation” we are after different guys anyway…
