As I watched that game on Saturday, I never felt like our offense had totally stalled to the point of 5 three-and-out drives in a row. And really, it never did. It seemed to always have a way of moving the ball, getting a few first downs, feeling like things were moving, and then losing a wheel somehow. Here are our offensive drives from Saturday:
(after da jump)
8 plays, 37 yds, punt
13 plays, 56 yds, field goal
9 plays, 42 yds, turnover on downs
7 plays, 31 yds, punt
1 play, 2 yds, end of half
6 plays, 76 yds, passing touchdown
10 plays, 63 yds, fumble (YOU'RE KILLING ME SMALLS!!!!)
5 plays, 15 yds, punt
3 plays, 4 yds, punt
4 plays, 4 yds, turnover on downs
11 plays (good), 70 yds (excellent), fumble (FML)
To me, that looks like we weren't just straight up awful....but we weren't very good at the same time. There's 7 (count 'em) drives there of 30+ yards, a point where your offense looks to be rolling. However, upon further review, 2 of them ended in points, 2 ended in fumbles, 2 ended in punts, and 1 ended in a turnover on downs. As in, 7 decent-at-worst drives ended in 2 scores for 10 points. 5 ended in absolutely nothing. I think this is a perfect testament to our inability to avoid stupid mistakes (i.e. false starts, fumbles, dropped passes), which kills our offensive momentum and makes us play the entire game from behind. If this happens against georgie in two weeks, we're doomed to listen to the nadlickers jawing at us for another whole year. Hell, if it happens against the Dookies on Saturday we may be screwed.
