How could the defense not look good?

Wake Forrest, who hasn’t looked competitive for weeks, was playing their fourth quarterback. We still almost lost…I can’t believe how bad the offense looks.

we still got

UVA, Duke, and MTSU. That’s bowl eligibility. If we win another game, that’ll be pure gravy at this point.

It does

The only way it doesn’t is if you play more than one 1-AA school. Though there is the outside possibility that if you end up 6-6 you’ll just get passed over in favor of someone else.

That "Outside Possibility"

Becomes a very real possibility when you play in the goddamned ACC…..

I was honestly impressed

with several of Nesbitt’s throws. He had a few rockets out there last night, but our receivers seem to be wearing concrete gloves. Should our receivers’ coach practice that newfangled “catching” thang, we may be able to force opponents to defend an air game. More often than not, BeBe made teams pay for committing to the run and leaving him in man coverage, usually by means of a trip to the end zone or a huge gain. Either way, he covered much real estate.

I understand that our wide outs are primarily tasked with blocking on the edge and the occasional crack-backs, but being able to catch some of those bullets last night may have spared me a heart attack or two last night.

That’s my observation- what say you?

yes

I will agree that it’s a different game if we complete some passes but it’s the idea that we couldn’t get the run going that frustrates most GT fans right now. We are a team that runs 65-70% of the time. We can pass but that is not our bread and butter. If we can’t get the running game going against one of the worst defenses on our schedule, then what does that say about our future prospects?

I think the two are the same

If the receivers had been catching those passes, then Wake would have had to play the run game more honestly, and Tech would have had a better running night.

Agree running game is a mess

Having seen the Jackets live last night saw some similarities in the way teams are defensing the option this year:

1) Allen isn’t as effective as Dwyer running the dive so defenses focus on taking that away.

2) Defenses are daring Nesbitt to pitch. Flooding the end and taking away his lane if he keeps the ball.

The A-backs have had their bouts of fumble-itis, so Nesbitt seems tentative about pitching. Most of the first half last night the pitch was available but Nesbitt kept it for no or small gain. Johnson must have told him to pitch more in 2nd half and Bostic had a nice run on first possession but then coughed it up on the next pitch.

If defense only leaves 1 option in the offense (pitch) and your QB isn’t committed to it, you have issues.

Johnson did change things up on the first touchdown drive by having Allen go outside the tackle on the dive play. He broke two nice runs once he wasn’t faced with the teeth of the defense.

All in all, a crazy game. I counted 6 penalties that either ended a Jacket drive or extended a Wake drive. Add in a muffed punt, bad snap on a punt, 2 fumbles, receivers who couldn’t catch and it was amazing to walk out with a win.

But we’ll take it. Maybe the team can build some momentum in the next two games before the tough part of the schedule.

all great points

Another positive was seeing some pass plays I’ve never seen before. Quick, high percentage routes.

It looks to me like the offense might have found something to keep the defense honest

From my seat at the game Wake was never prepared for lining an A back in the slot and a quick pass immediately after running out of the standard set. I think that might be an option going forward to keep defenses more honest.

Run the option and then go quick to the line with Roddy/Orwin etc. out there in the slot with no one on them except maybe a line backer. If Tech can break one or two of those, or just consistently get 4 or 5 yards, it will effect the defensive play calling and personnel.

I agree

that it’s very frustrating to see us unable to produce a running game when that’s what strikes fear into the hearts of our upcoming opponents. However, I feel a lot of that is because with very very little threat of an air game, they can fully commit to containing the edges. Plug the dive and overload the perimeter and we’re screwed. However, when we had BeBe, there was always a constant threat. In man coverage, he was a huge concern to opposing defenses. Over commit to the run → leaving receivers open → 70 yd touchdown.

Remember in the opening minutes of the 3rd quarter vs. Georgie last year? Snap under center, immediately turn and throw to BeBe who’d barely moved 3 feet, and he took care of the rest. Having that sort of a threat in the wide out position balances this offense to the point that almost no defense can handle us if we’re making our blocks.

Another thing we never see and I’m curious as to why…. fake pitch.

I’ve said in the past that I can’t argue with CPJ’s decisions because of his record pretty much everywhere he’s gone. The only variable of his we’ve yet to see in full is production with his own recruits. Once he convinces me of that, I’ll be a 100% believer.

I love that kick pass

Where you just throw it to Thomas/Hill, let them stiff arm the corner, and take off down the blatantly unguarded sidelines because the defense had 9 in the box.

I also loved that time when CPJ knew when to use the play action…..i.e. after 30 running plays in a row. Because there was a time when he had that part down…..wasn’t there??

[To be clear, I do love CPJ to death, but I absolutely hate the occasional stubborn playcalling….see: 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl]
