Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Lookin' at returning depth on Georgia Tech's Hoops Squad

I keep reading on all the message boards that GT's team will be a work in progress this season. I didn't really want to believe that the loss of two stellar forwards would really set us back that far. I checked out some figures from past Hewitt squads and came up with table for you all to peruse. It shows each season's returning minutes, returning points, returning rebounds, and returning assists from the previous season. It also shows our final ACC standing and our NCAA finish in that season:

The first thing I noticed was that most of the NCAA seasons required 70-75% across the board on most returning stats. It'd be a pretty good overachievement for this group to make the NCAA's based purely on the returners' stat lines. Any thoughts out there?

Your cold, hard facts do not change my mind at all

because I was already totally pessimistic about this season.

Is Paul Hewitt still our coach?

Oh, right, we’re screwed then.

Though I do think they’ll have a solid advantage if they can outrun other teams over the course of 40 minutes. They’ll probably win games 105-100, but as CPJ says, if we have more points on the board at the end, nothing else matters.

Maybe it has to do with recruiting?

Two years ago he only brought in Shumpert. Last year he landed a monster list. This year he only has one player again. Like I mentioned in the earlier BB post, I feel like I might be missing something regarding schollies in NCAA men’s BB because I see no reason why he would only recruit one player two of the last three years.

Ya know, I think we’ve actually discussed this in the past, either that or I’m remembering a conversation with co-workers, but I’m thinking that they must not get a set number each year, but rather they get a total period and once they are full you don’t get to recruit until players leave. If that’s the case, then maybe he should stagger his recruiting so that he has more depth from year to year and more stability through returning players.
