Tempted but still no
Went to my first game of the year tonight and it is hard not to get caught up in such a strong performance. I was happy with the decision not to try and press Ish Smith. I really felt like he was a non-factor because we were always back in our half court defense.
It was also nice to see the freshmen in person. Favors looked as advertised. Really controlled the glass during our big run. Oliver’s shot is super smooth and he looks like he has range beyond the three point line. Mfon struggled a lot against Ish (but Shumpert sure didn’t). Rice really hustles and at times was a little over eager. Reminded me of when Mario would come into games.
This is difficult.
I think I should abstain. This one year, this one game looked very good.l……
The college football season is so fragile. It's like a glass ball being pushed around from stadium to stadium by a rhinoceros.

we are growing
With youth comes mistakes (FSU/Georgie) but with talent comes wins (Duke/UNC/Wake)
I guess the atmosphere that I've tried to create here is that I'm a friend first and a boss second, and probably an entertainer third.
Gotta say no
We played a great game tonight, and have been playing well so far this season, but the poll says “as of 1/28/10,” not “from 11/01/09 to 1/28/10.” From 2004 to 2009 we squandered talent, and generally looked uncoached.
I don’t approve of the job Hewitt has done to this point. If we reach the Elite 8 or Final Four, I probably still won’t approve, he’ll just get a pass on it until the next season, where I’ll actually be thinking about putting “yes.”
What if...
we win at Duke?

I've already flipped back
I’m sorry, but I can’t contain my excitement for this team right now. Last year really dragged me down and the losses this year have been very frustrating, but I’m back to full support mode again. This team looks like it’s really finding its way right now and I can only imagine that it’s going to get better. Udofia needs to improve his court vision, play smarter and under control, and I think we should really be looking to get Miller and Rice some more PT, but this team is solid.
Lawal is a beast, Favors needs to be a more consistent beast from game-to-game, Peacock and Bell are amazing glue players. As a team they need to be as effective on offense as they were last night. If they can do that and maintain that defense, we might be looking at another year like 2004. There’s not enough room in my jeans to contain that level of excitement!
"Big Ten can have this challenge. Duke loses, we all win..."
-Marcus Ginyard, G - UNC
Miller can stay sitting
Who would you take the ball away from in order to put it in his hands? I’m sorry, but Miller has never been the best point guard. His freshman year it was Matt Causey, and last year it was Iman. Well now we have Iman and Mfon, and I wouldn’t ever sit both of those guys at the same time.
If we win at Duke
it won’t change my position on Hewitt. One good season does not erase 5 seasons of squandered talent and bad coaching.
Like I said, my thoughts are based on considerations beyond this season. 2003-2004 was awesome, but it was really the only season where we looked like we took full advantage of the talent at hand. This season is shaping up to be something similar – it remains to be seen if the success will continue into NEXT season.
I'm with you
I don’t get all these people changing their votes based on the outcome of individual games. Do they think he suddenly gets that much better or worse?
Exactly
I really don’t think people realize that the poll spans Hewitt’s whole career and not just this season and especially not just the most recent game. If you were no before the season, why would a 4-3 conference record with inconsistent play sway you to be a yes? Or, if you were a yes, why would you be a no after some solid wins and a chance to make some noise this season? I would really think this season hasn’t been good enough to win people over and at the same time it hasn’t been bad enough to lose people either. Would the people that are flip flopping please explain themselves. I am really curious.
I big 'yes'
The team played great last night…
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Just an impression but
it seems like Hewitt gets good talent and then lets them evolve organically into a unit. Like a giant amoeba they morph and flow in fluid motion until they begin to think and move as one. This is great when it works. I just wish they could run a series of set plays against a disciplined defense on those occasions when they are not in rhythm and need to regroup.
This talent should take them a long way however.

unless we run into
a Louisville or UNLV type team that’s well coached…

True
We played great last night, and I voted yes in the poll as I have after each win, but let’s not forget that the biggest reason we absolutely destroyed Wake was because their top defensive players got into foul trouble waaay early in the second half. I mean, their number one defender had 4 fouls with 17 minutes left in the game. Any team is going to get hot when they’re playing against scrubs.
Did Hewitt outcoach Gaudio or did Gaudio outcoach himself by not removing his player after a third foul? That decision alone lead to the circumstances creating the monster win. With LD out, their team had to compensate defensively, and that lead to other players picking up more fouls. Then Gaudio was more protective of his players and pulled them and held them out for longer. Even when everyone came back in, they couldn’t play as aggressively because they were worried about their foul situation. Basically, we were playing against a significantly inferior team at home. Sure, we’re getting better, and we probably still would have won, but the score would not have been so lopsided otherwise.
