Friday's Random 10

This weeks' Random 10 is brought to you by BCS Controversy. Boise State is the staple of BCS controversy.

And now on to the 10!

10. Next Year - Foo Fighters

9. Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon (I've had them in my Itunes before they made it big!)

8. Aliens Exits - Bink-182

7. One Way Out - The Allman Brothers

6. Just Couldn't Tie Me Down - The Black Keys

5. Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues

4. AM Radio - Everclear

3. It Feels Good to be a Gangster - Ghetto Boyz (Yes, I really like this song)

2. Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers

1. A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles

So in closing, it was a very random, but a very solid mix. Y'all know the drill. What's your list? Any thoughts on the BCS and the mid-major teams? Who is this years Boise State?

16 Team Playoff. Settle it on the field. Screw the presidents. Screw the conferences. Do it for the integrity of the game. Do it for the paying fans.

F a playoff

16 teams is way too many, and would totally de-value the regular season, as we playoff opponents like to bring up… Personally, I even think eight is too many. I like that in 2007, USC and Georgia were fully out of the NC race with two losses. In an eight team playoff, they would both have been in the mix.

Commentators and fans alike talk about what teams “are playing the best football right now” at the end of a season—I could give a crap who’s playing the best football “now.” When USC lost to Stanford; when Georgia lost to Tennessee, they were NOT playing the best football (sorry to harp on ‘07, but it’s a solid example). I like that teams have to put together a great WHOLE season of football. Just because the game was in September doesn’t mean it shouldn’t matter come December.

Although I think a “plus-one” four team playoff would be fair enough, I oppose that as well because of what I call “playoff creep.” A four team playoff would inevitably become eight and then sixteen teams. The “slippery slope” argument isn’t that strong, but there’s a lot of evidence to back it up. When I-AA was formed in 1978, the playoff was four teams, but expanded to eight in 1981; 12 in 1982; and 16 in 1986. Similarly, the Div 1 bball tournament went from eight teams in 1939 to 16 in ’51, 22 in ’53, 32 in ’75, etc until it reached 65 in 2001.

Hence, because sixteen teams is too many, four is as well.

I had picked Boise State to win in our bowl pick’em that year in the upset, so I got great satisfaction out of it.

No matter how many times I watch that, I still love it....

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

@chrisinnindy good list

@RamblinJeff You argue well my friend. I honestly don’t know how I feel about the system. I don’t like 16 teams, not sure if I like +1 either. I am pretty ok with the BCS with one exception. I would like to see a MWC/WAC championship game and then that winner goes to the BCS.

This years Boise State will be… Boise State again. Their Schedule is easy — very very very easy.

Random10 and BCS thoughts

List:
1. Falling Asleep On Lincoln Drive – The Jazz June
2. Cash Money Millionaires – Lil’ Wayne
3. I Believe In Ghosts (DJ Goodwin Remix) – New London Fire
4. Strength Beyond Strength – Pantera
5. Saint Simon – The Shins
6. Coward Of The Year Remix – Aesop Rock
7. What They Do – T.I.
8. Squad Shit – Lil’ Wayne
9. Fly You Anywhere – Inglewood
10. Porfirio Diaz – At The Drive-In

Not bad, a little too much Lil’ Wayne, but I have like 30+ different albums of his so go figure. Also, I really like these. I like music, a lot, so I guess I just find this fun.

As for the BCS, I don’t think it’s the answer, but I also don’t think a playoff is the right thing either. Most likely there is no right answer and there might never be one. Currently, with 120 teams all only playing 12 games, I don’t think there could ever be a way to easily pick the two best at the end each and every year. Every year brings a new situation to the table that forces a change to the system for the next year, and so it repeats.

I think the largest issue with the way things are set up now is the fact that it all hinges largely on polls and those polls are run by biased humans and dis-interested coaches. One of the reasons the NCAA basketball tourney is so popular is because it is largely based on a formula with the polls being considered to help seeding, not entry. It’s early and I haven’t thought this all the way through yet, so I’m not saying that college football should be determined on a formula exclusively, just that it might be something worth considering when determining which teams should or shouldn’t be invited to a BCS game when records are equal.

I don’t think it’s right to only allow a select few conferences to be a part of things. Either every conference should be a part of the BCS, or they need to reduce and realign the conferences. There are plenty of teams that need to be relegated to DIV-IAA or DIV-II.

Of course, the BCS only has a problem when there are multiple teams with equal records. Otherwise, it works perfectly!

Agree 100%

On the 120 teams comment, Jesse. How do we know whether a 2-loss SEC/ACC team is better than a 0-loss WAC team, when the WAC team might play 2 teams as good as the 2 worst teams on the big boys schedule? Heck, how do we even know (for example) Ohio State is the best team in the Big-10, if they don’t have to play Penn State and Michigan State (or whatever the rotation happens to give them)? I also definitely agree that every conference has to be a part of any proposed playoff (yes, even the Sun Belt). If they’re not good enough to be considered, they should be shipped back to 1-AA…

How can you like bands like The Jazz June, The Shins, and ATDI, but also like Lil Wayne? I guess you weren’t kidding when you said you like music a lot. Of course, almost all “hip-hop” is as enjoyable to me as dogs howling at the moon at 3am, so maybe I’m just getting too old…

by orang3b on Aug 3, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha

Yes, I was not kidding at all. I’m slowly pushing towards 30gb here at work. I already have over 30 at the house, and I still have around 100 CD’s I need to rip, plus about 100 more albums & artists I want to get. My stuff covers many different genres, but it’s mainly independent rock. I have 20’s and 30’s Jazz, rockabilly and outlaw from the 40’s and 50’s, classic rock and BK punk from the 60’s and 70’s, retro, new-age, & old-school hip-hop from the 80’s, alt rock & gangsta rap from the 90’s, and just about everything from all of the “new” genres (screamo, indie-pop, post-hardcore, etc) in 00’s. I like classical music as well. About the only things I don’t really enjoy is country and many of the more mainstream rock bands these days. With the country music, I find that odd and have tried getting into it multiple times, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. The mainstream rock thing is just that I find more times than not that the band is actually not that good without major studio help.

Music, to me, can be anything you want it to be, from something as mundane as filler noise while doing something else, to something on a much grander scale such as inspiration. Musicians are the modern-day bards, they tell a story with a tune, and you can always find one that suits your mood. I find it a travesty that there are so many good bands out there that will never be heard outside of their immediate locale. So, a large part of my interest is fueled by the hunt. I’m always looking to add another artist to my ever-growing list.

As for the rap thing, I like inteliigent artists, those that have a lot of thought behind the words. Lil’ Wayne doesn’t fall into that category per say, I just find a lot of his stuff hilarious. He is getting somewhat bland though recently. But artists such as Aesop Rock, Jay-Z (at times), & Lupe Fiasco lace their lyrics with much deeper meanings than what the words give you at face value. I also went through a R&B kick recently, so I have a bunch of stuff for the ladies (and by ladies, I mean my lovely wife, haha).

See, you got me going and now you had to read this long comment about my love for music. I apologize, but feel free to throw some bands out there you think I should check out or ask about something you’d like to hear. Maybe we’ll all find something new we like.

by Jesse28 on Aug 3, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow,

No – that’s great. I will never be upset about reading a long comment about music (some of the other guys here might not like it, though). I am similarly enthusiastic about my music, but my tastes are much more focused. I pretty much ignore all rap, R&B, new-ish country (I do like old country/western stuff sometimes), and (sadly) modern radio-rock. I’m pretty firmly in the alt-rock and your “new” genres camp, with a little classic rock and maybe some folk thrown in there too. I’ve got gobs and gobs of late ‘90s and early ’00s stuff, but I doubt with that collection I’d be about to un-earth any bands you should “check out”. I’ll give you a Random 10 anyway, and you tell me what I’m missing.

List:
1. “Modern Day Prayer” – Twothirtyeight
2. “The Broken Vow” – Converge
3. “Sexual Identity” – Seldom
4. “Son Of Sam” – Elliott Smith
5. “The Calypso” – Cave In
6. “Killing A Camera” – Braid
7. “Open Water” – Thrice
8. “The Seduction” – He Is Legend
9. “Waffle” – Sunny Day Real Estate
10. “Losing Touching Searching” – Appleseed Cast

I find it a travesty that there are so many good bands out there that will never be heard outside of their immediate locale. So, a large part of my interest is fueled by the hunt. I’m always looking to add another artist to my ever-growing list.

Agree 100%, but a 3 year old and a 1 year old make it pretty hard to keep up.

I totally agree RE: a formula

I would have no problem with college football using a formula 100% to determine seeding in a tourney or whatever. A complicated-ass formula involving strength of schedule and margin of victory up to a point (e.g. a 10-point win is better than a 1-point win, but maybe a 30-point win counts the same as a 20-point victory).

Unfortunately, that eliminates the “eyeball test,” and if all season everyone has said team X is the best and they go undefeated, yet a computer has the audacity to say team Y is better, everyone would flip out. Plus, since so many people don’t understand math, they don’t trust it… That’s why they already made the computers go from 1/2 to 1/3 of the BCS formula.

by Ramblin Jeff on Aug 3, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the point though

To eliminate the biased “eyeball test”. One poll is driven by regionally biased writers who are going to favor, whether consciously or not, those teams that they cover or see most. The other poll is driven by conference baised coaches who are only looking out for their conference because it nets them more money from the profit sharing, and that’s the best case scenarioe considering some don’t even vote, instead assigning the task to some student aid in the office, which theoretically increases the level of bias introduced.

I mean, that’s my point at least, haha. The first test is overall record. Make it so any games played against a team not in DIV-IA are simply exhibition games and don’t count either way, win or lose. Final record determines where you stand. If there are equal records, then lean on the formula to help determine placing.

You are right though, for whatever reason people who do not understand something do tend to be afraid of it. Completely irrational if you ask me, but the world is full of draters.

I need to write my thoughts out and organize everything so I can present this in more detail. I have a lot to think about, especially when it comes to the formula piece, because some of it is situational. I’m also willing to bet that like all other ideas that have been presented to date, there will still be some exceptions or circumstances that will require additional thought.
