Orange Bowl: Yellow Jackets vs The Hawkeyes
All I can say is this is a very interesting matchup. Georgia Tech has the 11th best offense in the nation, going up against Iowa's number 11th ranked defense in the nation. It should be interesting how Josh Nesbitt and Company control the clock which is the key to this game and every game Tech plays. Watch out for Iowa's rushing attack as well. Without Ricky Stanzi they have been pretty productive on the ground. Lets hope Tech can find a way to pull this one out and get an Orange Bowl victory under our belts!!!!!

I'm a Hawkeye fan,
looking forward to getting to know you guys over the next month. I wish you enough luck to be competitive, but not enough to win.
This will be a very interesting match up, I’m really looking forward to it.

Another Hawkeye fan here
I love watching Georgia Tech. I record their games if I cannot watch them live. I think this will be a great matchup when Georgia Tech has the ball. Paul Johnson’s offense versus Norm Parker defense. It will look like a 1980s game. I half-expect Kool and the Gang to play the halftime show.
Hey nerdos
Looking forward to debating the finer meanings of life with you boys throughout December. Good luck to you.

Good choice
As long as you are indicative of most Iowa fans, we’ll get along just fine
Maker's Mark--nectar of the gods...
I very much am.
We love to have the following conversation. I’ll provide the abridged version here:
Fuck you.
No, Fuck YOU!
Ok, now that that’s out of the way, want some barbecue and beer?
Of course, the southern bbq vs. KC style bbq is a debate that could cost the lives of many pigs. A very worthy debate that I’d be happy to engage in.

Somewhere around here, I think in the UNC guest blogger comments,
I posted my opinion of KC barbecue, but here’s the abridged version:
Gate’s is not bad if you haven’t had real barbecue for a while. The meat is fine, the beans are pretty good, and the atmosphere (counter, plastic menu boards, fast food seating) is perfect.
Arthur Bryant’s has great atmosphere.
KC Masterpiece is as bad as the bottled sauce with their name on it. Atmosphere artificial, sauce is sickly sweet.
Here’s how to win brownie points here: how many times have you been to the convention in Riverside?
I've not been to the convention, sadly.
I’m an Oklahoma Joe’s ribs guy, Gates for everything else. Though, the “customer service” you get at Gates makes me want to burn the place down on occasion. I’ve yet to really venture into Arthur Bryant’s, but I’m excited to do so.
I’ve never really been to the south, so I haven’t experienced its bbq. From what I understand, KC BBQ is more based on the sauce and southern BBQ is more about the smoking of the meat. Accurate?

That's a good summary
You can tell it’s about the sauce when you can get pork, chicken, brisket, sausage, and even cured ham at Arthur Bryant’s.
What we call barbecue is pork shoulder smoked for hours until it becomes the food of the gods. The sauce, thin and acidic, is a condiment that is served at the table. It provides a tangy (and sometimes spicy) counterpoint to the natural sweetness of the smoked meat.
If you need to use sauce during cooking then you aren’t cooking it right.
That said, you need to visit Arthur Bryant’s once just for the experience. I recommend going for lunch, because the neighborhood isn’t nearly as scary in daylight. I don’t think there’s any reason to go twice, unless you are with someone who hasn’t been.
The Midwest Sucks
So therefore their BBQ does, too.
I think in our discussion NC-style won. If it didnt, it shoulda. I’ll pass on the beer—I’ll take Kentucky’s finest instead, though.

Don't forget that it was Iowa...
…that gave us the Maid-Rite sandwich.
Damn skippy.
The original is in Marshalltown, which isn’t too far away from where I grew up.

Actually, the first Maid-Rite was in Muscatine.
One of the first franchises is in Marshalltown. I’m fairly certain, however, that the original Maid-Rite building in Muscatine no longer exists. Maid-Rite and McKee’s pearl buttons are pretty much the only good things to ever come out of this town. It’s rather unfortunate.

Wow.
I lose. 1-0. I’m assuming the M’town location is the oldest still in existence then, perhaps? I vaguely remember there being a big anniversary celebration during my youth…75 years in business or some such?

I think you're right about M'Town having the oldest remaining
Muscatine shut down both Maid-Rites for what seemed like years. So, unless Newton’s original franchise is still in operation, Marshalltown would have to be the oldest.

Do we offer them an olive branch
and share some Templeton Rye.
Or are we saving that all for ourselves?
Ah, who am I kidding. I prefer rum.

Only if we can figure out where Templeton Rye is actually made.
Sure, they have a distillery, but there is evidence that they are buying rye from somewhere else, at least until they’ve produced and aged enough to sell their own.
Templeton Rye had a special batch a couple years back
Some occasion, possibly for Templeton’s quasquicentennial? That was some delicious whiskey.

Holtz says there isn't much farming going on in IOWA in January, they will travel well.
We need to decide on colors for each side. Everybody showing up in Gold and Black will look a little strange. Penn State does it best, but should we White Out for Miami?

As good as any in the country, or better.
When we went to the Orange Bowl in 2003, we showed up to the tune of 40,000, plus thousands more who couldn’t get tickets but came to party and tailgate outside the stadium all day. Iowa = bowls’ best friend.
by Third Generation Hawk on Dec 7, 2009 1:32 AM EST up reply actions
Iowa is a pro team without the salaries
or the cynicism. Expect about 30K to travel there. If this had been the Fiesta, it could have been 50K because Arizona is where Iowans go to die. I’m guessing there will be about 10K Nerds there? If that? the one thing we can agree, the media sucks because they don’t give a shit about this game.
"I think it's safe to say our concerns are many." -- Kirk Ferentz
I'd say
…We had about 20k in Tampa so I’d expect to see around 25k in Miami give or take a few hundred. GT ain’t the flagship but what we lack in size we make up with fans that are gainfully employed and willing to fly or RV it down to Miami.
I’m sure it’ll be a partisan crowd but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tech faithful bought up our 18k tickets really quick plus some.
This new learning amazes me, Sir Bedevere. Explain again how sheep's bladders may be employed to prevent earthquakes.
I hope you are right.
Sadly, I won’t be able to make the trip down to South Beach, but I have little doubt the atmosphere will be incredible.
My only distinct memory of any kind of feelings towards Tech was an NIT game in 2003 (I think) when you guys hit a last second shot that hung on the rim for about 30 seconds before falling in to win at Carver-Hawkeye. That really pissed me off.
But, whatever. I’m happy to present payback on the football field. You Tech fans seem to be a very cool group of people, I’m excited about this…

that is the big complaint by bowls of the championship games…asks fans to double travel (sometimes)

I live in the midwest
Iowa travels well because everyone loves to get out of this God-forsaken, flat-ass area where the wind never stops blowing.
Suck it, Hawkeyes. Who makes their mascot a bird’s eye? How is that supposed to be bad ass?
“My bird’s eye can whoop your yellow jacket” isn’t very intimidating…
Seriously, looking forward to it, guys. Remember…its just a high school offense.

Which school is in Ames
and which is in Iowa City? I can never remember. Is there one in Cedar Falls? I know there is a huge fiberglass cow in Des Moines.
I once saw a band play at a bar called Gabe’s in Iowa City. I left early because of the rude college-aged assholes in the audience. The audience in Chicago had been less pushy and obnoxious.
U of IOWA: Iowa City
Iowa State: Ames (fuck them with the disembodied arm of a syphilitic hobo)
UNI (Northern Iowa): Cedar Falls
Hell yes, Gabe’s. Delightfully disgusting. What band didja’ see?
by Bucketochicken on Dec 7, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions
Southern Culture on the Skids
The fun part was sitting with the band at the bar in the back while the opening band was playing. The annoying part was the assholes who pushed in front of me and then started pushing back to clear themselves some room. Sure, that has happened at the Double Door in Chicago, but they weren’t as obnoxious about it. Except the girl in the prom dress. Hey, I stake out my spot next to the stage fairly early. If you want to stand there, show up early, too.
When was this?
I may have been one of those rude college-aged assholes in the audience. SCotS is good stuff.
Gabe’s has changed ownership and name, and is a bit less charming/shitholey than it was. But yes, the University of Iowa is in Iowa City, Iowa.
Brunettes not fighter jets
I think it was some time in the 1994-1996 time frame
I had seen SCOTS several times in the years before the Geffen album, but they toured hard for Dirt Track Date. I saw them in Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Iowa City. That it was the fourth time in a month is probably the reason I was so quick to bail on the Gabe’s show. It just wasn’t worth the hassle. It was clear I wasn’t going to be Santo at any of the shows.
Oh yeah, I remember those guys.
Yeah, Gabe’s (or whatever it’s called now) has really cleaned up – like, to the point where it actually feels safe-ish to use the restroom.

well half the college aged kids in Iowa City are imports from Chicago
so you shouldn’t be surprised when you get similar treatment both places
