How Tech Can Play for BCS Title

You have to love this scenario Tech fans, no matter how unlikely it is. I hate to put up the entire post but what the hay:

It’s a long shot because there are seven undefeated teams ahead of Yellow Jackets. But for fun, let’s give it a try.

Remember that if you’re Georgia Tech, the goal is to get to No. 2. Let’s try this:

Star-divide

1. Florida (8-0):  Runs the table and beats LSU (not Alabama) in the SEC championship game to finish No. 1. Now everybody is playing for No. 2.

2. Texas (8-0): Loses its regular-season finale at Texas A&M on Nov. 26. Texas coach Mack Brown says he still has the best one-loss team in the country. Then, in stunning upset, the Longhorns lose to Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game.

3. Alabama (8-0): Loses on Saturday to LSU. After failing to reach the SEC championship game, the Crimson Tide fan base and players are so deflated that they forget to show up at Auburn on Nov. 27 and lose for the second time.

4. Iowa (9-0): The Hawkeyes, who have won ugly just about every week, lose at Ohio State on Nov. 14. Whether or not Tech could catch Iowa would depend on the human polls because the computers really like Iowa (No. 2).

5. Cincinnati (8-0): The Bearcats have been playing well despite an injury to quarterback Tony Pike, but they lose at home to West Virginia on Nov. 13 and again at Pittsburgh on Dec. 5.

 6. TCU (8-0):  The Horned Frogs lose at home against Utah on Nov. 14. TCU is good, but a 12-1 Georgia Tech will jump an 11-1 TCU.

 7. Boise State (8-0): A 12-1 Georgia Tech would jump over an undefeated Boise State because the Broncos play such a weak schedule.  Boise plays three opponents ranked 100 worse down the stretch.

 8. Oregon (7-1): The Ducks are the hottest one-loss team in the country. They have to lose again. How about Nov. 21 at Arizona?

 9. LSU (7-1): The Tigers upset Alabama and win the SEC West. But then LSU gets its doors blown off in a rematch with Florida in the SEC championship game to finish 11-2.

 10. Georgia Tech (8-1): Georgia Tech runs the table beating Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia. Then it wins a rematch with Clemson in the ACC championship game to finish 12-1. The Yellow Jackets move into the No. 2 spot and play Florida for the national championship in Pasadena,

^ What this guy says

Agreed. Living in Jacksonville, I work with a ton of Florida guys and gals and this is exactly what some of us have been talking about lately. Oregon beating USC was step one, all this listed here now needs to happen. I would absolutely go bat-shyte crazy if this even remotely becomes a possibility.

I’m going to let myself imagine this happening for one second…

Two spread/triple option teams playing for the NC. You have to figure that the first team defenses play against this all day in practice, so who would actually be stronger—the offenses or the defenses?

Also, imagine the coaching head-to-head, especially since both HCs have acknowledged that they routinely talk and discuss blocking schemes, etc…..

Lot of ifs lol

But i wouldnt be surprised to see at least half of these things occur, which would put us in the top five probably.

What was that comment on the roundtable round-up about the ish?

Primo.

Of course, the only other way I can see us making it is that FSU and another team hand Florida two losses on their way to the SEC championship, which they win. If everything else on the list happens (except, of course, Texas losing to TAMU and the Huskers), we see the Longhorns in Pasadena.

Oregon losing will take care of Boise State,

but the Jackets still have to beat Wake, Duke, U(sic)GA, and Climpson or whoever.

How Tech could play for the national title rated #1

It’s not that much more of a stretch – all of the above scenarios occur, except:

FLORIDA – loses to an inspired Florida State team, which is playing for Bobby Bowden’s job (again) while performing at a level not even he could imagine, then loses to Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

ALABAMA – beats LSU, but in a huge letdown, loses at Mississippi State the next week, followed by the collapse against Auburn as described above.

IOWA – following its loss to Ohio State, is also surprised by Minnesota the following week.

Then Georgia Tech becomes #1 going into the National Championship game, maybe……

Hmm

I’m willing to bet it would only take one loss to Iowa for the pollsters to drop ’em like a rock. Either way, I think they lose to both Ohio St and Minn.

Iowa, check

Oregon, check.
LSU, check.

5 more teams to jump.

If we don’t get to #2, it really doesn’t matter. Just win out and relish a 13-1 season and give the ACC back-to-back BCS wins for the first time.

Cincinnati is playing tonight.

Big game for Tech fans. If this Big East squad falls, I see the Big East out of the MNC picture. Pitt lost to NCSU and doesn’t deserve a shot with that loss.

Yeah, I'm not allowing myself to set my hopes that high

I just want:

1) Beat Puke, clinch Coastal
2) Beat uga, own the state and notch win #2 in a long streak against the mutts
3) Beat Clemson for ACC Championship, shut them up from the first game
4) Win the bowl game, doesn’t matter who

If those happen, they’ll end up in the top 2 or 3, and I’ll be happy.
